No public list ranks Amazon agencies by verified PPC performance; directory rankings are paid placements and case studies show survivors. Rank candidates yourself with a seven-point checklist: reference calls with comparable brands, methodology depth, reporting samples, team structure, contract terms, audit quality, and how they define failure. Score each item before any sales call sways you.
The short version
- Every public ranking is an advertising product. The data you need is not in it.
- Performance claims cannot be verified externally, so rank inputs you can verify instead.
- Seven checks, scored in writing, beat any amount of pitch-meeting intuition.
- Methodology depth is the strongest single predictor of how ad decisions get made.
- The last check matters most: whether they can define failure before you ask.
Why the ranking you want does not exist
Understand the mechanism and the directories stop being tempting. Agency ranking sites earn from the agencies they rank, through placement fees, lead commissions, or both. No directory audits a single ad account. Case studies are no better as evidence: an agency with a hundred clients can always find five great stories, and the ninety-five other accounts do not volunteer theirs. Since the output you care about, verified performance across a full client base, is invisible from outside, the workable move is to rank what you can actually inspect. That is what the checklist does.
The seven-point checklist
Reference calls with comparable brands. Done properly: two current clients near your revenue and category, and you ask each what went wrong in the engagement, not what went right. Every real engagement has a wrong; you are testing whether they handled it.
Methodology depth. Done properly: they can show you what they analyze before making a decision, beyond review counts and search volume. For calibration, our product research runs on more than 90 data points per market, covering market size, growth trajectory, return rates, segment dynamics, and the rating gap. Hold advertising analysis to that standard of depth. An agency whose inputs are shallow will produce confident decisions from thin evidence.
Reporting samples. Done properly: a redacted weekly report from a live account. Read it for decisions, not charts. You should be able to see what was changed, why, and what happened next. A report that only displays metrics is a screensaver.
Team structure. Done properly: the name of the operator who would run your account, their current workload, and the coverage plan for holidays and departures. Vague answers here predict the account going quiet in month four.
Contract terms. Done properly: month-to-month, notice measured in days not quarters, and your campaigns, account, and creative remain yours on exit. Published pricing, like ours, also removes an entire negotiation in which information asymmetry works against you.
Audit quality. Done properly: before signing, ask for a written audit of your account and judge whether you could hand it to any competent operator and have it executed. Specific, prioritized, and executable means they audited. Themes and adjectives mean they prospected.
A definition of failure. Done properly: unprompted, they can name the conditions under which they would tell you to cut spend on a product, and the window over which they measure. Agencies that cannot define failure ride losing spend indefinitely, because nothing forces the conversation.
Score every candidate on all seven, in writing, before the second meeting. The discipline matters more than the weighting: sales calls are optimized to make you skip steps.
What most ranking sites will not tell you
The order you see is the order that was paid for. "Top Amazon PPC agency" pages monetize your click through listing fees and lead resale, and the editorial voice is a costume on a rate card. This is not a scandal, it is just what the product is, and once you see it you can use directories for what they are good at: assembling a long list of names to run through the checklist above.
The other unsaid thing: agencies know which metrics flatter. A pitch built on ROAS alone is a pitch built on the one number branded traffic can inflate indefinitely. Ask what happened to total sales and to spend efficiency on new-customer traffic across a twelve-month window, and watch whether the story survives.
