Suspension work and brand management are two different purchases. For an active suspension, hire someone who writes plans of action for a living and charges for that specific outcome. Bring in a growth partner after reinstatement. Anyone promising a guaranteed appeal result is selling you certainty they do not have.
The short version
- Reinstatement is a specialism. It is closer to regulatory writing than to marketing.
- Speed matters more than polish. A clear plan of action submitted on day two beats a beautiful one on day nine.
- No honest provider guarantees an outcome. The decision is not theirs to make.
- Fix the cause before you resume the growth plan. Reinstatement without a root-cause fix buys a second suspension.
- We do brand management, not appeals. I will tell you that on the first call rather than after you have paid.
Do the first two hours yourself
Whoever you eventually hire, do this before you contact anybody, because it costs nothing and it improves every version of what happens next.
Read the performance notification in full and write down the exact policy cited. Pull your account health page, your recent negative feedback, your return reasons, and any safety or authenticity complaints. Export the affected ASINs' order history. Then write one paragraph, in plain language, describing what you believe actually happened.
That paragraph is the input every good appeals specialist will ask for, and producing it yourself will tell you within an hour whether this is a documentation problem, a product problem, or an identity and verification problem. Those three lead to entirely different providers.
Comparing the three routes
| Route | Best when | What it costs you | Where it fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| Appeals specialist | The suspension cites a policy and you need a plan of action fast | A project fee, sometimes with a success component | Weak on the operational fix once you are back |
| Lawyer or IP counsel | Counterfeit claims, IP disputes, or an arbitration path | Hourly, higher, and slower | Overkill for a straightforward performance issue |
| Brand management agency | After reinstatement, when the job is rebuilding sales | A monthly fee | Most, including us, do not write appeals |
The decision rule: if your account or ASIN is currently suspended, route one, unless the trigger is an intellectual property or counterfeit allegation, in which case route two. Route three is a sequencing question, not an emergency question, and hiring it during a suspension delays the thing you actually need.
What to ask an appeals provider
- How many appeals of this specific policy type have you handled in the last year? Policy families differ enormously. Experience with restricted product violations does not transfer to inauthentic complaints.
- Will you write the plan of action or will I? Both models exist and both work. What you cannot have is ambiguity, because the submission window is short.
- What is your turnaround from brief to submission? Days, not weeks. Ask for the number.
- What happens if the first appeal is rejected? Multiple rounds are normal. Find out now whether that is included or billed again.
- Do you guarantee reinstatement? The correct answer is no. Amazon decides. Anyone claiming otherwise is describing an outcome they do not control.
- What do you tell me to change operationally? A provider who only writes the document leaves the root cause in place.
That last question is where appeals work meets brand management. The plan of action commits you to operational changes: supplier documentation, listing accuracy, inspection routines, customer service response times. Somebody has to actually implement those, and it is usually not the person who wrote the appeal.
After reinstatement, the benchmark changes
Once you are trading again, you are no longer buying risk mitigation. You are buying growth, and the standard should be an outcome benchmark rather than a service description.
The one I would hold any partner to is profitability inside twelve months. The majority of brands we take on are profitable within their first year, and that is the number I offer as a benchmark for the whole category rather than as a promise about a specific account. Ask any growth partner what proportion of the brands they onboarded two years ago are profitable today. Very few will have the figure ready. The ones who do are the ones tracking the right thing.
A suspension changes the arithmetic for a while. Ranking decays during downtime, review velocity stops, and inventory ages in a warehouse. Budget for a recovery period rather than an immediate return to the previous run rate, and make sure whoever you hire builds their plan on that assumption instead of on your pre-suspension numbers.
What most agencies will not tell you
Some providers in this corner of the industry price on desperation. A suspended account is losing money every day, the seller is frightened, and the fee elasticity is enormous. That is why appeal quotes vary so widely for what is often a two-page document plus supporting evidence. Get two quotes even when you are panicking, and be skeptical of any provider whose first message emphasizes urgency more than diagnosis.
Here is the part most agencies will not tell you plainly: the majority of suspensions come from something the seller can see in their own data before Amazon acts on it. Rising return rates with a consistent complaint, a supplier change that was never documented, a listing claim that drifted past what the product does, or a spike in negative feedback on one variation. Account health is a leading indicator, not a surprise. A partner who reviews it weekly as part of normal reporting is doing prevention work that costs nothing and is worth more than any appeal.
We also decline this work honestly. Flapen does brand management, and when a prospective client arrives mid-suspension I say so and point them to the right kind of help first.
