The right price for a first Amazon account audit is zero. We deliver a written report with prioritized fixes inside 48 hours at no charge, and several serious firms do something similar. Pay only when the deliverable includes the strategy and the operator hours to execute it, not just findings.
The short version
- A findings list is cheap. Execution capacity is the expensive part. Price the second thing, not the first.
- 48 hours is a reasonable turnaround for a written audit on a live account with granted user permissions.
- A free audit is a sales asset. That is fine, as long as it is specific enough to act on without the seller.
- The number that predicts audit quality is caseload. Ask how many brands the person writing it is responsible for.
- Never pay for an audit before you know who executes the fixes. Findings you cannot action are a receipt, not a strategy.
Three ways to get an audit, and what each really costs
| Route | Cash cost | Real cost | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free agency audit | Nothing | A sales conversation, and a scope shaped by what they sell | You want a fast second opinion and can filter the pitch |
| Paid one-off audit or consultant | A fixed fee | You still own execution afterwards | You have an in-house team who can act on it |
| Internal self-audit | Your own hours | Blind spots, because you built the listings | You have run the category before |
The free agency audit
Every credible managed service will look at your account before quoting. Ours runs on granted user permissions inside your own Seller Central, which you can revoke at any moment, and it produces a written document rather than a call. Ask for it in writing. A verbal audit cannot be compared against a second opinion, and comparison is the entire point of getting one.
The catch worth naming: an agency audits what it sells. If a firm only runs advertising, the report will find advertising problems. Read the audit for what it ignored as much as for what it found.
The paid one-off audit
A consultant with no service to upsell gives you a cleaner read. The trade is that the document arrives and then nothing happens. Most sellers I speak to already have a diagnosis. They are short of the twenty or thirty hours a month it takes to rebuild a catalog, rewrite creative, restructure campaigns, and hold the line for a quarter.
Buy a paid audit when you have staff waiting to act on it. Otherwise you are buying a second copy of a problem you already understand.
The internal self-audit
Free, and better than nothing, but you wrote the listings and you chose the images. The gap between what you meant and what a shopper sees is the exact thing an outsider is being paid to notice.
What a complete audit has to cover
An audit that skips any of these is partial. The seven areas we work through, in this order:
- Listing quality. Title, bullets, backend terms, A+ content, and whether the page answers the objection in the competitor negative reviews.
- Primary image click-through rate. The single most leveraged asset on the page.
- Conversion rate. Sessions against unit session percentage, by ASIN, not blended.
- Ad performance. Structure and search term data, not just the headline efficiency number.
- Traffic channel activation. Which sources are actually running versus which ones are theoretically available.
- Pricing. Against the segment, and against your own margin floor.
- Return rate. The number that quietly decides whether scaling is even legal in profit terms.
If the report you get back has one section, you were sold a lead magnet.
The decision rule
Take the free audits first, at least two of them. Compare where they disagree, because the disagreement is where the real judgment lives. Then price the execution, not the diagnosis. Our flat monthly fee starts at $800 for one product and runs to $2,400 for five, with all 50 plus services included at every tier, no commission and no revenue share. Whatever you compare that against, compare it on the same basis: fee versus hours of senior attention.
Here is the number I would use as a filter. Across about 70 brands and 50 operators, we carry around 1.4 brands per operator. Ask any candidate the same question. A person carrying 12 accounts can produce a beautiful audit and will never have the hours to execute it. Caseload predicts follow-through better than any credential on the proposal.
What most agencies will not tell you
A free audit is priced at zero because it converts. That is not dishonest, it is a business model, and I use it myself. The dishonest version is the audit that manufactures urgency: a long list of severe sounding problems, a risk of suspension implied but never evidenced, and a proposal attached to the last page.
Test it this way. Ask the auditor which of their findings you should fix yourself this week without hiring anybody. An honest report has two or three of those. A sales document has none, because everything in it requires them.
The second thing worth knowing: strategy is not a separate product. Any firm charging one fee for a strategy deck and another to implement it has an incentive to keep the deck vague. Ask for the fixes ranked by expected impact, with the person who would do each one named.
