A PPC expert on Amazon is someone whose advertising decisions survive contact with your margin, your listing, and the traffic channels beyond paid search. Expertise is tested, never claimed. Run six gates in order, starting with which of the five traffic channels the candidate runs and ending with the last product they told a client to stop selling.
The short version
- The title is free. The channel map is not. There are five traffic channels on Amazon, and most sellers run two.
- A candidate who runs only paid search runs one of five. That can be the right hire, priced as one channel.
- Gate two is arithmetic. Break-even advertising cost of sale equals your contribution margin before ad spend, per product.
- Ads amplify a listing. They do not repair one. Conversion rate, primary image click-through, price, and stock decide what a bid can do.
- Below about $1,000 a month in media, hire nobody yet. A small account holds too little data for anyone to read.
The five channels an expert is measured against
Advertising skill is easy to perform and hard to verify. Coverage is the opposite, because a candidate either runs a channel or does not.
The five traffic channels are organic, paid, promotions, influencer and creator, and off-channel. Most sellers run two of five, and so does most of the help they hire.
Paid search is one row below. Anyone priced as the owner of your traffic fills in the other four.
| Channel | What an expert can show you | The tell of a beginner |
|---|---|---|
| Organic | Rank history on the terms that carry sales | A ranking promise with no terms attached |
| Paid | Text, image, and video spend, with profit per product | One blended target across the whole catalog |
| Promotions | A discount calendar tied to inventory cover and unit margin | Deals accepted because the console suggested them |
| Influencer and creator | A revenue share program with named creators and their acquisition cost | A gifting list with no attribution |
| Off-channel | External traffic with its own tracking and window | A claim about social traffic nobody measured |
The five channels in the order we plan them, read as a hiring test.
Fifty operators at Flapen run about 70 Amazon brands by hand, with sourcing in Guangzhou and creative studios in Dubai. The channel mix is settled before any campaign exists.
Six gates, in order
Work through them in order. Each stage ends on a gate, and a candidate who cannot clear it stops there.
| Stage | What it proves | The gate |
|---|---|---|
| 1. The channel map | Which of the five channels they ran in the past year, on accounts they can describe | They name what they run, what they do not, and who owns the rest |
| 2. Your break-even, computed in front of you | Contribution margin before ad spend, read from your landed cost, Amazon fees, and return rate | One number per product, never a category average from a blog post |
| 3. The fix that is not a bid | Five of our seven audit areas sit outside the ad console, from listing quality to return rate | They name a fix outside advertising before they touch a bid |
| 4. The lift they can prove | Price, stock, and images held still, with branded search taken out of the paid figure | The window and the baseline are named before the test starts |
| 5. The stop rule inside 60 to 90 days | Four signals decide a product: rating trend, return rate, conversion rate, and cost of customer acquisition trajectory | They describe a product they told a client to stop selling, and the numbers that decided it |
| 6. The handover | Access through your own account under permissions you can revoke | Month to month on 30 days' notice, and you keep the account, campaigns, and creative |
The six gates in the order we run them, with Flapen figures as of September 2026.
Gate five is the one I failed. Early on I funded a product for three months while the numbers said stop, because I believed better advertising would rescue it. Our Kill Criteria came out of that quarter.
Where the sequence stops for most candidates
Most candidates clear gate one and gate two. The stall is gate three, because it asks a person paid to run advertising to name something advertising cannot fix. Hire around it by naming who owns the listing, the price, and the stock.
Then there is the answer that costs us the sale. If you sell one product and spend under about $1,000 a month on media, run the campaigns yourself for another quarter. A thin account gives nobody enough signal to read.
What a PPC expert will not tell you
Four things stay out of the pitch, ours included. Each one carries a gate you can run in the same call.
- Certification measures attendance. A badge proves someone finished a program the platform wrote, and says nothing about judgment while a conversion rate falls. Ask for a decision they got wrong last quarter and what it cost.
- A fee that grows with your budget prices restraint out of the room. Our fee is set by product count, $800 a month for one product and $2,400 for five, with no share of your media. Ask what happens to their invoice in the month you halve your spend.
- Free audits open sales conversations, ours included. Judge the document instead of the offer, and check that it names your ASINs and your figures. Ask whether a freelancer could execute the report without hiring its author.
- Nobody volunteers the campaigns they switched off. A monthly summary built only from wins means the losing tests are quietly leaving it. Ask which tests lost money last quarter and what each one cost.
Hold us to the same six gates. If we cannot compute your break-even on the first call, do not hire us.
