Flapen cover for Alternatives to big-box Amazon consultants UAE: the same product staged on three sweeps for three markets

UAE sellers do not need a big-box consultancy. Score the alternatives, boutique agencies, independent consultants, and specialized freelancers, on a weighted sheet: ad discipline 30 points, marketplace coverage 20, in-house delivery 20, contract terms 15, reporting 15. Anything scoring below 70 gets dropped. The ad discipline test is one question: what ACoS target, at which product stage.

The short version

  • Build the scorecard before the first call. Once a consultant is charming you on Zoom, your criteria drift toward theirs.
  • Ad discipline carries the most weight. A single question exposes it, and most candidates fail it.
  • A UAE seller has structural advantages a London consultancy cannot use. Your time zone covers Europe's morning and Asia's afternoon, and your suppliers are a short flight away.
  • Contract terms are a scored criterion, not fine print. Notice period, exit assets, and account ownership all carry points.
  • Score at least four candidates. The spread between them is the real information.

The scorecard

Run every candidate through the same sheet and write the scores down. Deciding from memory after four sales calls is how big-box consultancies win.

Criterion Weight Full marks looks like
Ad discipline 30 Distinct ACoS targets for launch and for maturity, with reasoning
Marketplace coverage 20 Runs amazon.ae plus every marketplace you plan to enter, natively
In-house delivery 20 The people on the call do the work, no subcontracting
Contract terms 15 Month-to-month, short notice, you keep account and assets
Reporting 15 Written weekly, live regularly, direct access to the operator

Ad discipline, 30 points

Ask one question: what ACoS should my product run, and does that number change with the product's stage. The wrong answer is a single number. A launch has to buy market position aggressively, and a mature product has to defend margin efficiently, so the target must move with the stage. A consultant quoting one universal ACoS is reciting a benchmark blog post, not managing capital. This single question filters more candidates than the other four criteria combined, which is why it carries 30 points.

Marketplace coverage, 20 points

From the UAE you are rarely selling only to the UAE. Full marks means the candidate actively manages amazon.ae and the marketplaces on your expansion list, with content produced by native speakers rather than translated at the end. Flapen operates across all 23 Amazon marketplaces from Abu Dhabi, and I built it here partly because the Gulf time zone overlaps European buyers in the morning and Chinese suppliers in the afternoon, which a US-based consultant structurally cannot offer you.

In-house delivery, 20 points

Big consultancies in this region frequently sell local and deliver remote, through subcontractors you never meet. Score full marks only when the person diagnosing your account is the person operating it. Partial marks for a named, permanent team. Zero for any vagueness about who does the work.

Contract terms, 15 points

Points for month-to-month billing, a notice period of 30 days or less, no onboarding fee, and written confirmation that you keep your Seller Central account, campaigns, and creative on exit. Deduct everything for a twelve-month lock-in, whatever the discount attached to it.

Reporting, 15 points

Full marks for a written update every week and a live review on a fixed cadence, with the operator reachable directly rather than through an account executive. Our own standard is a weekly written Slack update and a bi-weekly live call, and nothing about that is hard to copy, so treat it as the floor.

What most agencies will not tell you

A universal ACoS target is not a simplification, it is a tell. It means pricing, stage, and strategy are not connected in the consultant's model, and your ad budget will be managed to a number that has nothing to do with your margin. The second tell is a market entry recommendation delivered without market sizing. Before anyone quotes you a retainer for a new marketplace, they should show you the demand analysis that justifies entering it. The sizing method we use is published at our research approach, and you are free to run it against any proposal you receive, including ours.
