In practice that is a brand manager, either employed by you or supplied by an agency, with advertising, listings, creative, and inventory in one set of hands. Split those responsibilities and the gaps between them become your losses.

## Start by naming the owner, then justify the choice

Write one sentence before you talk to anybody: *this person is accountable for the profit of this brand on Amazon.* Then find someone who will sign their name under it. Everything else in this decision follows from that sentence, because most hiring mistakes here are not about skill level. They are about hiring three competent specialists and no owner.

The justification is simple. Amazon revenue comes from a small number of interconnected levers, and every one of them moves the others. Change the primary image and your ad efficiency changes. Change the price and your conversion rate and rating trajectory change. Change inventory timing and your rank changes. A person who controls one lever cannot be held to an outcome that depends on the other four.

## The four candidates, compared

| Option | Cost shape | Owns the outcome | Best when | Fails when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| In-house brand manager | Salary, benefits, ramp time | Yes, if given authority | Deep catalog, Amazon is the main channel | The role is half of someone's job |
| Full-service agency | Monthly fee | Yes, if staffing is real | No owner on payroll, launches in flight, several marketplaces | Ratio of brands per operator is hidden |
| Freelancer or specialist bench | Hourly or per project | No. Owns a deliverable | One clear craft gap | You need someone to decide, not execute |
| Founder keeps it | Your time | Yes, by default | Under five products, you enjoy the work | Growth arrives and the queue does not shrink |

The decision rule: if the person you are considering cannot be given authority over pricing, creative, advertising, and inventory timing together, they are a specialist, and you still need an owner above them.

## The capability test that actually predicts results

There are five ways to put traffic on an Amazon listing: organic search, paid advertising, promotions and deals, influencer and creator content, and off-channel traffic from outside Amazon. Most sellers run two of them, usually organic and paid, and then wonder why growth flattens once the obvious keywords are covered.

So ask every candidate which of the five they have personally run, and ask for an example of each. You are not looking for someone who claims all five equally. You are looking for honesty about the two or three they are strong in and a plan for who covers the rest. A candidate who has never touched creator content or off-channel traffic can still be excellent, provided they say so and you know the gap exists before you hire.

This is the same test I would apply to us. Around 50 operators here manage about 70 brands, and part of the reason the ratio stays low is that activating more than two channels per brand takes real hours from a real person.

## What the role should include, whoever fills it

- **Advertising.** Campaign structure, bids, search term harvesting, and targets that change as a product matures.
- **Listings and content.** Copy, backend terms, A+ modules, and the image set, refreshed rather than written once.
- **Creative production.** Photography and video, either in-house or reliably commissioned.
- **Catalog and cases.** Suppressed listings, variation problems, and Seller Support work that eats afternoons.
- **Inventory and pricing.** Coverage, timing around promotions, and the margin arithmetic underneath every discount.
- **Reporting.** A weekly written view of profit direction, conversion rate, ACoS, rating trend, and inventory position.

If a candidate's scope excludes two or more of these, you are not hiring an owner. You are hiring a contributor, and you should price and manage them accordingly.

## The cost comparison, without the sales gloss

An in-house brand manager is the largest fixed cost and the deepest product knowledge. An agency converts that into a monthly fee, which for us runs $800 for one product up to $2,400 for five, with everything included at every tier and no revenue share until a brand clears $50,000 a month in profit. A freelancer is the cheapest line item and the highest coordination load, because you become the account director by default.

Whichever you choose, the pass-through costs are yours: inventory, Amazon's own fees, freight, trademark filing, and advertising spend. There is no hard minimum on ad budget, though below about $1,000 a month there is not enough data for meaningful optimization, so keep that in the plan when you compare offers.

## What most agencies will not tell you

The pitch team is rarely the delivery team. Ask for the name of the operator who will hold your brand, how many other brands they carry, and whether you can speak to them before signing. The answer to the second question is the one that matters, and it is the one least often volunteered.

The other thing: nobody wants to discuss what happens when a product should be discontinued. A brand manager whose incentive is to keep spending will always find a reason to keep spending. Ask what would make them recommend stopping, and what evidence they would bring to that conversation. If there is no answer, the account has no brake.

## Related answers

- [How to choose an Amazon account manager](/blog/how-to-choose-an-amazon-account-manager)
- [Best Amazon account managers for small brands](/blog/best-amazon-account-managers-for-small-brands)
- [Amazon agency vs in-house: which is better](/blog/amazon-agency-vs-in-house-which-is-better)
- [How to launch your first product on Amazon](/blog/how-to-launch-first-product-on-amazon)
- [Build vs buy for your Amazon channel: the complete guide](/blog/build-vs-buy)

See what a named brand manager covers, tier by tier, at [Flapen](/amazon-consulting).

## Keep learning

- [Compare Amazon business models](/guides/business-models)
- [Value your Amazon business](/tools/business-value-calculator)
","published","working-with-agencies",[14,15,16,17],"amazon-fba","private-label","influencers","off-channel","joel-turcotte-gaucher","/images/blog/clusters/build-vs-buy-10.jpg","2026-09-04T05:14:51.798+00:00
[23,27,31,35
"who-to-hire-to-run-my-amazon-fba-brand-faq-1","Only if the catalog keeps them busy every day.
