A listing is four disciplines, research, copy, art direction, and data, and few freelancers cover all four.","Hire whoever will do the research before the writing. Listing optimization is a copy job only at the end. The work that moves conversion is competitor review mining, keyword mapping, and image testing, with a number attached to each change. Expect a specialist team, not one freelancer wearing four hats.

## The short version

- **A listing is four disciplines.** Research, copy, art direction, and data. Almost nobody is good at all four.
- **Differentiation comes from competitor negative reviews.** The gap between what buyers wanted and what they got is your copy brief.
- **The main image carries more weight than the bullets.** It decides the click, and the click decides everything downstream.
- **Price the work against the traffic it will serve.** Optimizing a listing nobody searches for is a rounding error.
- **Ask for the research artifact, not the draft.** The keyword map and the review analysis are what you are buying.

## Start with the number that decides whether this is worth doing

Before you hire anybody to touch your listings, work out how much traffic the page already receives and how much the category can ever send it.

We do not take on a product in a category worth less than **$2 million a year**, because below that line there is not enough revenue available to capture profitably once customer acquisition cost is accounted for. That threshold is a market size test, and it applies just as usefully to a listing decision. If your page gets 300 sessions a month and the whole category is small, a $2,000 listing overhaul cannot pay for itself no matter how well it is executed. The right move there is a cheaper fix or a different product.

If the traffic exists and the conversion rate is the problem, listing work is the highest-return spend on Amazon. Nothing else changes the outcome of every session you will ever buy.

## The economics of a listing rebuild

Here is the arithmetic. Use your own figures, this is only the shape of it.

| Input | Example figure | Where you get it |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly sessions on the ASIN | 4,000 | Business Reports |
| Current unit session percentage | 9% | Business Reports |
| Average selling price | $34 | Your own catalog |
| Current monthly revenue from those sessions | $12,240 | Sessions times conversion times price |
| Conversion after rebuild | 11% | Your assumption, tested |
| Revenue at the new rate | $14,960 | Same arithmetic |
| Monthly gain | $2,720 | The difference |

Two percentage points of conversion on a mid-sized listing is not an aggressive assumption, and it produces more monthly gain than most management fees cost. That is the honest case for hiring properly rather than cheaply.

Now run it the other way. On a page with 300 sessions and a $14 price, the same two points is worth about $84 a month. Same work, same invoice, entirely different decision. This is why "who to hire" cannot be answered before "what is this worth".

## What each option actually buys

| Option | What you get | Where it breaks down |
|---|---|---|
| A copywriter | Words, quickly, at low cost | No keyword map, no images, no follow-through on the numbers |
| A design freelancer | Images and A+ modules | Art direction with no view of search behavior or reviews |
| A listing tool subscription | Volume data and a template | Data without judgment, and every competitor has the same output |
| A specialist listing agency | Research, copy, and creative together | Usually a project, so nobody owns the result after handover |
| Full brand management | The same team keeps optimizing against live data | Only worth it if you have enough products to justify the fee |

We sit in the last row and charge a flat monthly fee from $800 for one product, with all services included at every tier. I would still tell a seller with a single low-traffic ASIN to buy the second row and stop there.

## The research artifact you should demand

Whoever you hire, ask to see these three documents before any copy is written.

1. **The keyword map.** Every target term, its rough volume, its placement in title, bullets, backend, or A+ alt text, and which competitor currently owns it.
2. **The review gap analysis.** Pulled from the negative reviews of the top competitors in your category. This is where differentiation comes from, and it is the reason our positioning work is never invention. The complaints are already written down.
3. **The image concept board.** Thumbnail-size mockups of the main image against the live search results page, on a phone screen.

Our research runs to **90 or more data points** per product before anything is written, covering market size, growth trajectory, return rate, segment dynamics, and the rating gap. You do not need all ninety to hire well. You do need to see that a candidate has a structured list rather than a habit.

## What most agencies will not tell you

Listing optimization is sold as a creative service and priced as a creative service, but the majority of the value is in the two hours of research that precede the writing. That is uncomfortable to sell, because a client can see a rewritten bullet and cannot see a keyword map they did not ask for. So the research quietly gets skipped, and what you receive is competent copy aimed at the terms your competitor already dominates.

The second thing most agencies will not tell you: a rewrite can lower your sales. Changing a title changes indexation. Changing a main image resets whatever the algorithm had learned about your click-through. Anyone who has done this at volume has watched a listing dip for two weeks before it recovers. Ask each candidate what their rollback plan is and whether they change one element at a time or all of them at once. If they have never seen a rewrite go backwards, they have not done many.

## Related answers

- [Who can audit my Amazon account and fix conversion](/blog/who-can-audit-my-amazon-account-and-fix-conversion)
- [Best tools and services for keyword research on Amazon](/blog/best-tools-and-services-for-keyword-research-on-amazon)
- [Full service Amazon FBA management cost](/blog/full-service-amazon-fba-management-cost)
- [Fair Amazon agency pricing models](/blog/fair-amazon-agency-pricing-models)
- [Done-for-you Amazon management: the complete guide](/blog/done-for-you-management)

Send one ASIN and we will return the keyword map and the review gap before you decide anything at [Flapen](/amazon-consulting).

## Keep learning

- [Compare Amazon business models](/guides/business-models)
- [Value your Amazon business](/tools/business-value-calculator)
","published","working-with-agencies",[14,15,16,17],"listing-setup","product-images","keyword-strategy","competitor-analysis","joel-turcotte-gaucher","/images/blog/clusters/done-for-you-management-09.jpg","2026-09-04T06:53:51.798+00:00
[23,27,31,35,39
"who-to-hire-to-optimize-amazon-listings-faq-1","For a single product in a small category, often yes.
