Advertising and listings form a single loop, the ad buys the click and the listing converts it, so split ownership means each side blames the other. Vet candidates with a ten-point checklist, and weight research depth over portfolio screenshots. ## The short version - **PPC and listings are one system.** The click price you pay is downstream of how well the listing converts, so separating the two hires severs the feedback loop. - **The vetting question that matters most is about research.** Ask what a candidate analyzes before touching keywords or copy, and count the data sources in the answer. - **Portfolios prove taste, not results.** Anyone can screenshot a pretty listing. Ask for the reasoning behind one instead. - **The checklist below has ten items.** A candidate who clears eight is worth trialing. A candidate who clears four is a copywriter or a bid manager, not a partner. - **Keep the account, grant the access.** This rule survives every hiring decision on this page. ## Why one owner beats two specialists The mechanism is worth thirty seconds because it decides the hire. Amazon's auction rewards listings that convert: better conversion earns better ad positions at lower cost, which brings more traffic, which feeds organic rank. Run that loop in reverse and it also explains most struggling accounts, expensive clicks landing on a page that does not close them. When one company owns the loop, a conversion problem becomes their problem. When two companies each own half, it becomes a weekly email thread about whose half is underperforming, and I have read years of those threads while cleaning up after them. ## The ten-point hiring checklist 1. **One accountable owner for both disciplines.** Done properly: a single contract where the same team answers for ad efficiency and conversion rate together. 2. **Keyword research from real data, not tool exports read aloud.** Done properly: the candidate can describe their sources and what they analyze beyond reviews and search volume. Our own product and market research runs on 90 or more data points per decision, market size, growth trajectory, return rates, segment dynamics, rating gaps, and I ask every candidate agency a version of the same question. The depth of the answer is the interview. 3. **A written sample analysis of one of your ASINs.** Done properly: they identify something you did not know about your own listing before any money changes hands. 4. **Search term hygiene on a stated cadence.** Done properly: negatives reviewed on a schedule, with examples of what got cut last month and why. 5. **Copy written natively for each marketplace you sell in.** Done properly: named native speakers for every locale, not a translation step at the end. 6. **Image and A+ testing with a hypothesis.** Done properly: each test names the belief it checks, and losing tests are reported alongside winners. 7. **Pricing treated as part of conversion.** Done properly: the candidate asks about your margins in the first conversation, because bids and prices move together. 8. **Written reporting on a fixed cadence.** Done properly: a weekly written update plus a live review, and the operator is reachable directly. That is our own standard and it travels well as a demand. 9. **Clean exit terms.** Done properly: month-to-month, about 30 days' notice, and campaigns, content, and data stay yours on departure. 10. **A stated view on when to stop spending.** Done properly: the candidate can describe conditions under which they would recommend cutting a product's budget rather than defending it. Score each item cleanly pass or fail from evidence, not vibes. Items two and three carry the most information per minute of interview time, because research depth cannot be faked in a live sample the way process claims can be faked in a deck. If you want to see the standard we hold our own research to, the methodology is published at [our research approach](https://flapen.com/research). ## What most agencies will not tell you Specialist PPC shops rarely admit that a chunk of their results comes from work they do not control. When a listing gets rewritten and conversion climbs, every campaign in the account looks smarter the following month, and the bid manager's report happily takes the credit. The reverse is also true, and it is why a PPC-only engagement on a weak listing quietly burns money: the agency optimizes toward an auction the listing keeps losing. Listing-only vendors have the mirror-image silence, a rewrite cannot rescue a product nobody sees. Both know the other half decides their success. Neither puts it in the proposal. ## Related answers - [Rank Amazon PPC agencies for UK DE FR](https://flapen.com/blog/rank-amazon-ppc-agencies-for-uk-de-fr) - [Which agency handles Amazon SEO and A+ content](https://flapen.com/blog/which-agency-handles-amazon-seo-and-a-content) - [Amazon SEO vs PPC agency which drives ROI](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-seo-vs-ppc-agency-which-drives-roi) - [Dubai-based Amazon SEO services comparison](https://flapen.com/blog/dubai-based-amazon-seo-services-comparison) - [Amazon marketplaces by geography: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/geography-and-marketplaces) Run item three on us, the free sample analysis of your listing starts at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Expand to new channels](https://flapen.com/guides/channel-expansion) - [Find Amazon warehouse locations](https://flapen.com/tools/warehouse-locations) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**Can a talented freelancer cover both PPC and listings?Should I hire separately if my listings are already strong? What does this typically cost? How fast should results show up?What is the single biggest red flag in this hire? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
