Every stage has a gate. Skipping one does not accelerate the sequence, it just moves the failure further down it. ## The short version - **Indexation is stage zero.** You cannot rank for a term the catalog does not associate with your product. - **Relevance is earned per term.** Amazon learns which queries your product satisfies from buyer behavior. - **Choose terms on winnability.** Search volume without a path to position one is a budget drain. - **Reviews are a conversion input.** They feed rank through orders, never directly. - **Each stage has a gate.** Move on when the number clears, not when the calendar says so. ## You have a new listing and nothing is happening That is normal, and it is not usually a penalty or a mystery. A new ASIN has no behavioral history, so Amazon has almost nothing to go on when deciding which searches you belong in. Everything below is a way of giving it that history honestly. The stages run in order. The gate at the end of each one is the permission to spend money on the next. ### Stage one: choose the terms on evidence Keyword selection is a research problem, not a tool problem. We examine more than 90 data points on a category before committing, covering market size, growth trajectory, return rate, segment dynamics and the rating gap between what buyers want and what is currently offered. Review count and monthly sales volume are two inputs among many, and on their own they lead people into categories that look attractive and are not. Out of that work comes a short list. Not the terms with the largest volume, the terms where the gap between what incumbents deliver and what buyers ask for is widest, because those are the searches you can realistically win.**Gate:** a ranked list of ten or fewer primary targets, each with a written reason for why you can take share on it. ### Stage two: get indexed properly Place the primary term in the title, distribute the secondary set across bullets, description, A+ copy and backend fields without stuffing. Then verify. Search the exact phrase plus your ASIN and confirm the listing appears. Do this for every target term before spending anything.**Gate:** every target term returns your ASIN on a verified index check. ### Stage three: make the page convert before you fund it Rebuild the primary image against what the category's negative reviews complain about. Answer the top three complaints visually, above the fold, before a buyer has to read anything. Differentiation should always come from competitor complaints and the rating gap, never from something you invented in a brainstorm.**Gate:** click-through rate and conversion rate are at or above the category norm you measured in stage one. ### Stage four: buy the first sales, deliberately Advertising, promotions and creator content all generate the early orders that teach Amazon which queries you satisfy. Run them concentrated on the stage one term list rather than spread across everything the tools suggested. Enroll Vine at the same time, because a page with no ratings converts poorly and inflates the cost of every click.**Gate:** consistent daily orders on the target terms, with acquisition cost trending down week on week. ### Stage five: defend the position Rank gained is rank you can lose. Stockouts, a price change by a competitor, a fatigued ad creative and a slipping rating all pull the position back. Weekly maintenance is the entire job at this stage: harvest converting search terms, add negatives, watch placements, keep inventory covered.**Gate:** position held for four consecutive weeks without increasing spend. ## What good looks like at each stage | Stage | The measure | Common shortcut that fails |
| --- | --- | --- | | Term selection | Ten targets with written reasoning | Exporting every keyword the tool returns | | Indexation | Verified index check per term | Assuming backend fields worked | | Conversion | At or above category norm | Funding traffic to a page that loses the click | | Early sales | Falling acquisition cost | Incentivized orders or rebate schemes | | Defense | Position held four weeks | Declaring victory on a single good day | ## What most agencies will not tell you Ranking advice is sold as tactics because tactics are easy to demonstrate. The uncomfortable truth is that most ranking outcomes were determined at stage one, when the product and the terms were chosen. A superb operator working on a poorly chosen product in a saturated segment will lose to an average operator on a well-chosen one, every time. The second thing: some of what gets marketed as white hat sits in a gray area that Amazon has not enforced yet. Rebate services, review exchange groups and manipulated search behavior all get described in careful language. Ask a candidate directly whether any part of their method involves paying a third party to place orders. Get the answer in writing, because the account is in your name and the suspension will be yours. ## Related answers - [Rank Amazon product fast without black hat](https://flapen.com/blog/rank-amazon-product-fast-without-black-hat) - [Product ranking strategies for new Amazon listings](https://flapen.com/blog/product-ranking-strategies-for-new-amazon-listings) - [Keyword research tools for Amazon private label](https://flapen.com/blog/keyword-research-tools-for-amazon-private-label) - [What to use for review generation within TOS](https://flapen.com/blog/what-to-use-for-review-generation-within-tos) - [Amazon launch services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/launch-services) We will tell you which of the five stages your listing is actually stuck at, in writing and at no cost, at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Plan the product launch](https://flapen.com/guides/product-launch) - [Estimate your launch cost](https://flapen.com/tools/launch-cost-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**How long does white hat ranking take on a new listing?Do backend search terms still matter? How many keywords should a new listing target? Is Vine worth it for ranking? What single metric should I watch during the climb? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
