Beauty is an image and trust category with heavy ad competition, so a generalist running static ACoS targets will quietly burn your launch. ## The short version - **Beauty is won on imagery.** Swatches, textures, before-and-after frames, and skin-tone range. Stock product shots lose. - **Claims are a legal surface.** "Reduces wrinkles" and "treats acne" are regulated territory. Your agency must know where the line sits. - **Ad economics shift by stage.** A launch target and a maturity target are different numbers. One static target is a red flag. - **Reviews carry more weight than in most categories.** The strategy for earning them must stay inside Amazon policy. - **Specialization shows in questions.** A beauty-capable agency asks about shade ranges, ingredient sourcing, and expiry dating in the first call. ## The seven-point beauty capability checklist You cannot verify a specialization claim from a website, every agency lists beauty as a category it serves. Run the shortlist through these seven checks and score what they show you, not what they say. 1. **Imagery production, in-house.** Ask who physically shoots swatches and texture close-ups, and in which building. Our creative studio in Dubai does this without subcontracting, which is the only structure where a bad frame gets reshot in days rather than weeks. Done properly means the agency can show raw and final versions of the same beauty asset. 2. **Claims discipline.** Ask what they would do with "dermatologist tested" if you have no documentation. Done properly means they refuse the claim and reposition around something you can prove. An agency that shrugs is signing you up for a suspension risk. 3. **Stage-based ad targets.** Ask for two numbers: the ACoS they would run at launch and the ACoS they would hold at maturity. We set aggressive targets during launch, when the job is rank and review velocity, then tighten to efficiency once the product holds position. One number for both stages means they run every product on autopilot. 4. **Competitor review mining.** Ask how they decide what your images and A+ say. Done properly, differentiation comes from the negative reviews and rating gap of the products above you, not from a brainstorm. 5. **Rating protection.** Beauty products draw subjective one-star reviews such as "shade did not match" and "broke me out". Done properly means listing copy and imagery that set expectations precisely enough to prevent them. 6. **Pricing you can read.** Beauty margins are thin at launch. A fee you cannot predict makes the model worse. Our management tiers are flat and published on [our pricing page](https://flapen.com/pricing), from $800 per month for one product. 7. **A kill answer.** Ask what evidence would make them tell you to stop a shade or a SKU. If nothing would, every losing variation will be defended as nearly there. Two passes out of seven is a marketing agency with a beauty page. Six or seven is a specialist, whatever the website says. ## Where the generalists lose beauty accounts I have watched beauty brands arrive at Flapen from generalist agencies with the same three wounds: a main image that looks like every rival, ad spend held at one blended efficiency target through launch, which strangles rank velocity exactly when it matters, and a claims paragraph that would not survive a compliance review. None of these show up in a pitch deck. All of them show up in the first week of an audit, which is why we put the audit before the contract, written, prioritized, and free, inside 48 hours. ## What most agencies will not tell you Beauty listings live and die on repeat purchase, and almost no agency reports it. The category's economics work because a customer who trusts a serum buys it eleven more times, yet most agencies optimize and bill on first-order metrics only. Ask any candidate how they measure repeat rate and what they have ever changed because of it. Silence is your answer. The other omission: seasonality in beauty ad auctions. Cost per click around gifting periods can make a target that was sane in May ruinous in December. An agency that sets targets annually, rather than restating them as conditions move, is managing a spreadsheet rather than your account. ## Related answers - [Recommend an Amazon agency specializing in beauty brands](https://flapen.com/blog/recommend-an-amazon-agency-specializing-in-beauty-brands) - [Which agency for Amazon listing optimization private label](https://flapen.com/blog/which-agency-for-amazon-listing-optimization-private-label) - [Best agencies for Amazon review generation policy-safe](https://flapen.com/blog/best-agencies-for-amazon-review-generation-policy-safe) - [Amazon brand store design agencies ranked](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-brand-store-design-agencies-ranked) - [Amazon brand management tiers: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/brand-tiers) Put your beauty account through the seven checks, then test us against them at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Compare Amazon business models](https://flapen.com/guides/business-models) - [Value your Amazon business](https://flapen.com/tools/business-value-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**Does a beauty brand really need a specialist agency? What does good beauty A+ content include? How much ad budget does a beauty launch need? How do I check an agency's claims knowledge quickly? Can the same agency handle my imagery and my ads? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
