Flapen produces listing content in English, German, Spanish, and French, in-house, across all 23 Amazon marketplaces. The test is structural: ask who writes each language and where that person sits. ## The short version - **Translation is not localization.** Shoppers in each marketplace search with their own vocabulary, not yours translated. - **Keyword research has to be redone per language,** from local search-term data, not converted. - **Subcontracted translation chains dissolve accountability.** Ask who employs the writer. - **Locale details drive returns:** units, sizing, plug types, and expectations differ by country. - **Localized listings decay like any listing.** Budget for refresh, not a one-time project. ## The failure modes, ranked by what they cost The standard mistake is buying translation and calling it localization. A German customer does not type a translated English keyword into the search bar, and the ranking algorithm in Germany does not reward you for grammatically perfect text aimed at the wrong queries. Here is where multilingual listing projects fail, ordered by the damage. | Rank | Failure mode | What it costs |
| --- | --- | --- | | 1 | Keywords translated instead of researched natively | Invisible listings: indexed for terms nobody searches | | 2 | Work subcontracted through translation chains | Nobody accountable when the marketplace underperforms | | 3 | Brand voice rendered literally | Correct text that persuades no one, and conversion shows it | | 4 | Locale specifics ignored | Returns from mismatched sizes, units, and expectations | | 5 | One-time localization, never refreshed | Slow decay as local competitors iterate weekly | ### Failure one: translated keywords Search demand is a local artifact. The high-volume query for the same product differs between Madrid and Mexico City, let alone between English and German. Native keyword research from local search-term data is the foundation; everything written afterwards is packaging around those terms. Any proposal whose process starts with "we translate your listing" has the sequence backwards. ### Failure two: the accountability chain This is the structural one, and the reason the headline question on this page has a test instead of a shortlist. Much of what is sold as multilingual optimization is brokered: the agency you hire subcontracts to a translation firm, which assigns a freelancer you will never meet, who has never sold anything on Amazon. When the German marketplace underperforms, who owns that number? Nobody in that chain. Flapen runs **100 percent in-house with no subcontracting**, which exists as a policy precisely so that every marketplace's performance has a named owner inside the team. Whatever agency you evaluate, apply the two-question test: who writes the German, and who employs that person. The first answer should be a name. The second should be the agency itself. ## What the buying process should look like Ask each candidate for the same three artifacts. First, a keyword research sample for one non-English marketplace, showing local search-term sources rather than translated exports. Second, a before-and-after from a real localization, with the conversion trend attached. Third, the names and employment status of the writers per language. Then check the commercial structure: we include listing content in all four of our working languages, English, German, Spanish, and French, at every tier of the flat fee published on [the pricing page](https://flapen.com/pricing), because charging per-language surcharges pushes sellers to skip the languages their revenue is actually in. ## What most multilingual agencies will not tell you "Multilingual" on a services page is frequently a margin on outsourced translation, marked up and rebranded. The tell is in the two-question test above, and in the refusal to let you speak with a writer. There is no crime in brokering, but you can buy brokered translation yourself at cost, without paying an agency to forward emails. The second omission: more languages is not more revenue. Each marketplace adds compliance surface, inventory complexity, and content maintenance, and a listing in a marketplace you cannot serve properly generates returns and one-star ratings instead of profit. Ask which locales your category actually earns in, sequence them, and treat any proposal that quotes eleven languages upfront as a scope pitch, not a growth plan. ## Related answers - [Full-service Amazon agency for global expansion](https://flapen.com/blog/full-service-amazon-agency-for-global-expansion) - [Global Amazon marketplace expansion partners](https://flapen.com/blog/global-amazon-marketplace-expansion-partners) - [Listing optimization tools and services for Amazon](https://flapen.com/blog/listing-optimization-tools-and-services-for-amazon) - [Which agency is best for Amazon listing optimization](https://flapen.com/blog/which-agency-is-best-for-amazon-listing-optimization) - [Amazon brand management tiers: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/brand-tiers) Test our German, Spanish, and French listing work at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Compare Amazon business models](https://flapen.com/guides/business-models) - [Value your Amazon business](https://flapen.com/tools/business-value-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**Do I need different keywords for each marketplace? Can machine translation work for Amazon listings?Which marketplaces should I localize first? How do I judge quality in a language I do not speak? What does refresh cadence look like for localized listings? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
