Hire one team for the catalog, then ask for a redacted plan of action that was accepted.","Two different jobs sit inside that question. Catalog cleanup is operational work any full-service brand manager should own week to week. Reinstatement is episodic compliance writing, closer to drafting an appeal. Hire one team for the catalog, then check specifically whether those same people have written plans of action that were accepted.

## The short version

- **Cleanup and reinstatement are separate purchases.** One is continuous, the other is a specialist skill you need rarely and urgently.
- **Rank the damage by revenue lost per day, not by how alarming it looks.** A split variation family bleeds quietly for months.
- **Brand Registry unlocks most of the fixes.** Without it, half the repair tools are unavailable.
- **Ask for a redacted appeal that worked.** A real document beats any summary of a case study.
- **A restored listing is not a recovered listing.** Ranking history does not come back with it.

## The five ways a catalog breaks, ranked by cost

The most expensive mistake I see is treating a suppression as an emergency and a broken variation family as housekeeping. It is the other way round more often than sellers expect. A suppressed child is visible, so somebody fixes it that day. A variation family that quietly split eighteen months ago has been dividing reviews, rating and conversion across pages nobody defends, and it goes unnoticed because the dashboard shows no error.

| Failure | What it actually costs | Who should own the fix |
|---|---|---|
| Account-level suspension | Every marketplace on that account, from the hour it lands | A compliance writer with accepted appeals behind them |
| Broken variation family | Reviews and rating split across children, conversion down on all of them | Your brand manager, working through flat files |
| Suppressed or inactive listing | That ASIN's full revenue, plus rank decay that outlasts the repair | Brand manager, the same day |
| Duplicate or orphaned ASINs | Ads and organic traffic landing on a page you are not defending | Brand manager, with Brand Registry access |
| Wrong category or attributes | Wrong browse nodes, wrong filters, weak relevance on your best keywords | Whoever owns keyword strategy |

### Suppression and inactive listings

Usually an image, a compliance attribute, or a required field that changed under you. The fix is mechanical. The part that is not mechanical is what happens next, which is that traffic has to be rebuilt.

### Variation families

The highest-return catalog work available to most brands, and the least glamorous. Consolidating a split family concentrates review count and rating on one page and lifts conversion on every child. It is flat file work and it needs somebody who has done it before, because a bad upload can break more than it repairs.

### Duplicates and orphans

Old listings, supplier-created ASINs, and abandoned test pages compete with your live page for the same keywords. Merge or suppress them, and make sure advertising is not still bidding on the ones you abandoned.

### Category and attributes

Being in the wrong browse node means invisibility in the filters shoppers actually use. This is a research job before it is an editing job.

### Suspension and reinstatement

This is writing, not operations. The document has to state root cause, immediate corrective action, and preventive systems, in the language the policy team expects. Ask any candidate how many appeals they have written, what proportion were accepted at first submission, and to show you one with the identifying details removed.

## Restarting the account after the repair

Here is the part that gets skipped. When a listing comes back after suppression or a variation rebuild, it behaves like a new product. Its ranking history is gone or damaged, and its conversion signal has to be re-established.

That means the advertising target has to change with it. The ACoS you accept at launch and the ACoS you accept at maturity are different numbers, and a restored ASIN sits at the launch end of that scale again for a while. The common error is resuming the old efficient target on the day the listing goes live, seeing almost no impressions, and concluding the recovery failed. Set an aggressive target deliberately, rebuild velocity, then walk it back down as conversion stabilizes.

We run this work in-house across all 23 marketplaces, and our free written audit covers listing quality, primary image click-through, conversion, ad performance, traffic channel activation, pricing and return rate. It comes back within 48 hours and costs nothing, which is a reasonable way to find out whether your catalog problem is what you think it is.

## What most agencies will not tell you

They will not tell you that catalog cleanup is often the entire growth plan for the first quarter, and that it is unglamorous enough to be hard to sell. It is much easier to pitch a new creative package than to say your revenue problem is a variation family that broke in 2024. Be suspicious of any proposal that jumps to advertising before anyone has audited the catalog underneath it.

The second thing: nobody outside Amazon can guarantee a reinstatement. Any firm promising one is either lucky or selling you certainty that does not exist. What you can legitimately buy is a well-argued appeal, written fast, by somebody who has done it repeatedly.

## Related answers

- [Done-for-you Amazon catalog management](/blog/done-for-you-amazon-catalog-management)
- [Which service handles Amazon catalog flat files](/blog/which-service-handles-amazon-catalog-flat-files)
- [Amazon account suspension help agency recommendations](/blog/amazon-account-suspension-help-agency-recommendations)
- [What does a good Amazon account audit include](/blog/what-does-a-good-amazon-account-audit-include)
- [Done-for-you Amazon management: the complete guide](/blog/done-for-you-management)

If you want the catalog looked at before you commit to anything, the free audit is at [Flapen](/amazon-consulting).

## Keep learning

- [Compare Amazon business models](/guides/business-models)
- [Value your Amazon business](/tools/business-value-calculator)
","published","working-with-agencies",[14,15,16,17],"seller-account","listing-setup","brand-registry","amazon-fba","joel-turcotte-gaucher","/images/blog/clusters/done-for-you-management-05.jpg","2026-09-04T06:49:51.798+00:00
[23,27,31,35,39
"which-agency-handles-amazon-catalog-cleanup-and-reinstatements-faq-1","Ideally yes, because the person who knows why the listing broke writes a better appeal.
