The later one sets the date.","Start the day inventory becomes buyable and the listing is finished, which are often two different dates. Finished means images, title, bullets, A+ content and a review path in place. Advertising an unfinished page spends real money sending traffic somewhere that cannot convert it, and that money does not come back.

## The short version

- **Two conditions, not one.** Buyable inventory and a finished listing. Whichever is later sets the date.
- **A cold page burns budget at full price.** Traffic to a listing that cannot convert is a pure loss.
- **Indexing comes before bidding.** Confirm the listing is findable for your target terms first.
- **Start small and deliberately,** because early data is worth more than early volume.
- **The first weeks buy information.** Judge them on what you learned, not on what you earned.

The number that decides this question is your conversion rate. If your listing converts poorly, no amount of advertising spend fixes it, because advertising multiplies whatever the page already does. Doubling the traffic to a page that converts badly doubles the loss. This is why the start date for advertising is set by listing readiness rather than by a date in a project plan.

## The failure modes, ranked by what they cost

I have watched each of these in client accounts and in brands we own. They are ordered by how much money they typically destroy.

1. **Advertising a listing with no reviews and a weak primary image.** The most expensive mistake available. You pay full price per click for traffic that bounces, and you teach yourself the wrong lesson about the product's demand. The fix is unglamorous: finish the images, get a legitimate review path running, then spend.
2. **Turning on ads before checking indexing.** If the listing is not indexed for a term, bidding on it is not a strategy, it is a donation. Search the term, confirm your product appears, then build the campaign.
3. **Launching all campaign types at once.** Automatic, broad, phrase and exact all live on day one produces a mess you cannot attribute. Start with a small exact-match set plus one automatic campaign for research, and add structure as data arrives.
4. **Judging week one on advertising cost of sale.** Early spend buys placement data and search terms. If you cut it at day five because efficiency looks bad, you paid for the information and then threw it away.
5. **Starting big to force velocity.** Large opening budgets on a new listing convert a modest, recoverable loss into a large one. Volume does not compensate for an unproven page.
6. **Waiting too long.** The mirror image, and it is real. A finished listing sitting without traffic accumulates nothing, and organic ranking has no source of sales to build from. Once both conditions are met, delay costs you compounding.

### What "finished" actually means

A listing is ready for paid traffic when the primary image is competitive against the current page one, the title carries the main search term without being a keyword dump, the bullets answer the objections you found in competitor reviews, A+ content is live if Brand Registry allows it, and there is a legitimate path to early reviews. Miss any of those and you are advertising a draft.

## What your ad agency will not tell you

Advertising is the easiest part of a launch to sell and the hardest part to blame. When a launch underperforms, the campaigns are usually where everyone looks, because campaigns are visible and adjustable. In my experience the cause sits upstream far more often: the wrong product, a primary image that loses the click, a price that cannot carry acquisition cost.

An agency that only sells advertising has a structural reason not to say that. If the honest advice is to stop spending and rebuild the page, that advice reduces their own scope. Most brands we take on become profitable within their first year, and the ones that get there fastest are almost never the ones with the cleverest bidding. They are the ones where somebody was willing to pause the ads for two weeks and fix the listing.

## Related answers

- [Best practices for FBA PPC during launch](/blog/best-practices-for-fba-ppc-during-launch)
- [Ideal launch day schedule for Amazon new product](/blog/ideal-launch-day-schedule-for-amazon-new-product)
- [KPIs to track during Amazon brand launch week](/blog/kpis-to-track-during-amazon-brand-launch-week)
- [White hat ranking strategies for new listings](/blog/white-hat-ranking-strategies-for-new-listings)
- [Amazon launch services: the complete guide](/blog/launch-services)

If you want an outside read on whether your listing is ready for paid traffic, ask for the audit at [Flapen](/amazon-consulting).

## Keep learning

- [Plan the product launch](/guides/product-launch)
- [Estimate your launch cost](/tools/launch-cost-calculator)
","published","product-launch",[14,15,16,17],"ppc","listing-setup","organic-ranking","keyword-strategy","joel-turcotte-gaucher","/images/blog/clusters/launch-services-09.jpg","2026-09-04T08:33:51.798+00:00
[23,27,31,35,39
"when-to-start-ppc-in-an-amazon-launch-timeline-faq-1","No. Campaigns cannot serve on an unbuyable listing, and any budget assigned to that period does not spend.
