Expect a flat monthly amount tiered by product count, plus your own media spend on top. Ours runs $800 to $2,400 across one to five products. ## The economics in five lines - **A fixed fee makes advice cheap to give honestly.** When my revenue does not change if I tell you to cut spend, telling you costs me nothing. - **The retainer is the smallest line in your budget.** Media, inventory, and Amazon's fees are all larger. Optimize those first. - **Full funnel means the fee has to cover research, creative, and media together.** Split them across vendors and you pay for the seams. - **Depth of research is the thing you are really buying.** We work a market through more than 90 data points before committing to it. - **Ask for a proposal that separates fee from pass-through costs.** If it arrives as one number, it cannot be compared with anything. ## Where the money actually goes Say you are running three products and you want the whole funnel covered. Here is the shape of a month, with the retainer in its real proportion. | Line | Who it is paid to | Typical behavior |
| --- | --- | --- | | Management retainer | The agency | Fixed. Ours is $1,500 a month at three products | | Advertising spend | Amazon | Variable. No hard minimum, though under $1,000 a month there is too little data to optimize well | | Amazon seller fees | Amazon | Percentage of every sale, plus fulfillment per unit | | Inventory and freight | Your supplier | Lumpy, tied to reorder cycles | | Creative production | Inside the retainer, or extra | Depends entirely on whether the studio is in house | | Trademark and registry | Third parties | One off, but blocking if not done early | The point of laying it out this way is that the retainer is rarely the number that decides your profitability. A one percent improvement in conversion rate or a renegotiated landed cost will move your year more than any fee negotiation. ## What full funnel has to include to earn the name 1. **Market and demand research.** Size, growth trajectory, return rate by segment, competitor rating gap. This is upstream of everything and it is the stage most retainers skip. 2. **Product and positioning work.** Differentiation drawn from competitor negative reviews rather than invented in a workshop. 3. **Listing and creative.** Copy, images, A plus content, and video, in every locale you sell in. 4. **Media across channels.** Paid placements, plus promotions, creator content, and off-channel demand where they apply. 5. **Post-purchase.** Review generation within policy, return-driver analysis, and repeat-purchase mechanics. 6. **Reporting and decisions.** A written weekly update, a live review on a regular cadence, and a standing way to escalate. If a fixed retainer covers one to four but not five and six, it is a media retainer with extras. That is a legitimate product, it just is not full funnel, and you should not pay for the wider scope. ## The research depth test There is one question that separates a retainer that will grow a brand from one that will maintain it: what did you analyze before you told me this would work. Our answer runs to more than 90 data points on a market, covering size, growth trajectory, return rate, segment dynamics, and the gap between what competitors are rated and what buyers say in the reviews behind that rating. That is not a boast about volume of analysis, it is a statement about what has to exist before money is committed. Review count and monthly revenue estimates from a keyword tool are two data points. They tell you a category is busy. They do not tell you whether you can win in it. Ask any candidate to name the data points they use besides review count and sales volume. If the list is short, the strategy underneath the retainer is short too. That includes us, and you should ask. ## What a fixed retainer will not tell you on its own A flat fee removes the incentive to overspend your budget. It does not remove every misalignment, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. Here is the one that remains. A fixed fee rewards efficiency for the agency as well as for you, which means there is a quiet pull toward accounts that need less work. The protection is not a different pricing model, it is a stated workload standard. Ask how many brands the person assigned to you carries, ask what the weekly cadence is, and ask what happens in a month when your account needs three times the usual attention. The answers should be specific. The second thing worth saying: conversion rate is the number under everything else in a funnel. If your page converts poorly, extra media budget buys the same leak at a larger scale, and no retainer structure changes that arithmetic. ## Related answers - [Full-service Amazon brand management vs ala carte pricing](https://flapen.com/blog/full-service-amazon-brand-management-vs-ala-carte-pricing) - [Monthly cost for outsourced Amazon management](https://flapen.com/blog/monthly-cost-for-outsourced-amazon-management) - [Fair Amazon agency pricing models](https://flapen.com/blog/fair-amazon-agency-pricing-models) - [Tools to measure Amazon agency contribution margin](https://flapen.com/blog/tools-to-measure-amazon-agency-contribution-margin) - [Amazon agency pricing and economics: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/pricing-and-economics) The full tier table and what each one includes is at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Compare Amazon business models](https://flapen.com/guides/business-models) - [Value your Amazon business](https://flapen.com/tools/business-value-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**Does a fixed retainer include advertising spend? What is a reasonable retainer for three products?Do I need to commit for twelve months? How much of my own time will this take? What happens to the work if I leave? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
