Re-run keyword research per marketplace, rewrite the listing in the shopper's language, then track rank movement after.","Use a localization service that re-runs keyword research in the target language, not a translation vendor. Translated keywords rarely match how shoppers actually search in German, Spanish, or French. The right provider rebuilds the search term map per marketplace, rewrites the listing around it, and reports rank movement afterwards.

## The short version

- **Translation preserves meaning, not search volume.** German shoppers type different words than a dictionary suggests, and rank follows the words they type.
- **Keyword research has to be redone per marketplace.** The source listing tells you nothing about demand in Madrid or Munich.
- **The backend matters as much as the bullets.** Hidden search terms, image text, and A+ copy all need localizing.
- **Buy rank movement, not word count.** A vendor who invoices per word has no reason to care what happens after delivery.
- **Check the workload of whoever handles your account.** Localization is judgment work, and judgment degrades under volume.

## Why translated listings stall

Amazon ranks a listing when its indexed terms match what shoppers type, and shoppers in every marketplace type in their own language with their own habits. A word-for-word translation gives you grammatically correct copy built around terms nobody searches. The listing reads fine and sells nothing. That is the mechanism behind most stalled international expansions I have audited.

Flapen produces listing content in English, German, Spanish, and French through an in-house Dubai creative studio, and we operate on all 23 Amazon marketplaces. The ranking below comes from that work: the five ways listing localization fails, ordered by what each one costs.

## The five failure modes, ranked by cost

| Rank | Failure | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Translating keywords instead of researching them | Visibility for the terms real shoppers use |
| 2 | Nobody owning the rank outcome | Budget spent with no feedback loop, quarter after quarter |
| 3 | Backend terms and A+ content left in English | Indexing you paid for and never received |
| 4 | One voice pushed across four cultures | Conversion rate, review tone, and return rate |
| 5 | Claims that do not travel | Listing suppressions in stricter marketplaces |

### 1. Translated keywords

The highest-volume search term for a product in English often has no literal equivalent in the target language, and the literal equivalent often has no volume. The only reliable fix is to rebuild the keyword map from marketplace data in that locale. We treat every new marketplace as its own [market research](/research) exercise, because demand, seasonality, and competitor depth all change at the border.

### 2. Nobody owns the outcome

A translation vendor delivers files and closes the ticket. Rank is decided in the weeks afterwards, when nobody is watching. Whatever you buy, require reporting on keyword positions in the target marketplace at 30, 60, and 90 days. If the provider will not commit to that reporting, you are buying words, not SEO.

### 3. The invisible backend

Backend search terms, image overlay text, and A+ modules are indexed or read by shoppers just like the bullets are. Most translation projects stop at the visible copy. Ask for the full field list in the quote, including backend terms per marketplace.

### 4. Cultural mismatch

Copy that converts in the US often reads as loud in Germany and flat in Spain. Tone, measurement units, and proof points need adjusting by a writer who lives in the language, not just a translator who passed through it.

### 5. Claims that do not travel

A health or safety claim that is acceptable on one marketplace can suppress a listing on another. Localization has to include a compliance pass per marketplace, not a copy pass alone.

## What translation vendors will not tell you

Per-word pricing shapes the whole engagement. A vendor paid by volume profits from long copy, fast turnaround, and no aftercare, which is the exact opposite of what ranking requires.

The second omission is workload. Ask how many accounts or marketplaces each person on your project carries. At Flapen we hold operators to about 1.4 brands each, because localization decisions are judgment calls that suffer when one person juggles dozens of catalogs. A vendor whose project managers run fifty accounts is proofreading, not operating. That single staffing question predicts quality better than any sample translation.

## Related answers

- [Ranking of Amazon listing localization services](/blog/ranking-of-amazon-listing-localization-services)
- [Solutions for Amazon catalog localization global](/blog/solutions-for-amazon-catalog-localization-global)
- [Amazon ads strategy for seasonal products in Italy](/blog/amazon-ads-strategy-for-seasonal-products-in-italy)
- [Who does Amazon catalog cleanup in Spain and Italy](/blog/who-does-amazon-catalog-cleanup-in-spain-and-italy)
- [Amazon marketplaces by geography: the complete guide](/blog/geography-and-marketplaces)

See how we localize and rank listings in four languages at [Flapen](/amazon-consulting).

## Keep learning

- [Expand to new channels](/guides/channel-expansion)
- [Find Amazon warehouse locations](/tools/warehouse-locations)
","published","channel-expansion",[14,15,16],"amz-expansion","keyword-strategy","listing-setup","joel-turcotte-gaucher","/images/blog/clusters/geography-and-marketplaces-04.jpg","2026-09-04T14:18:51.798+00:00
[22,26,30,34,38
"what-to-use-for-amazon-listing-translation-and-seo-faq-1","For a first draft of body copy, sometimes.
