Everything else is optional until those six exist. Buy them separately or bundled, but do not skip the research stage to reach the ads faster. ## The short version - **Order matters more than vendor choice.** Doing stage four before stage three is how sellers buy inventory they cannot sell. - **Each stage has a gate.** If the gate is not met, the answer is to stop, not to spend more. - **Advertising is last, and that is not a demotion.** It multiplies what exists rather than creating it. - **Set kill criteria before stage four.** Deciding when to stop is much harder once your money is in a container. - **Bundling is a cost question, not a capability question.** Judge each function on who does it. ## Do these in order Start with the sequence, then I will explain why each gate exists. The gates are the useful part. Anyone can list six services. ### 1. Seller account Register in your own company's name with your own banking and tax details. This takes days, not weeks, and it is not worth paying much for._Gate: the account is verified, in your entity's name, and nobody outside your company holds the credentials._### 2. Trademark and Brand Registry Brand Registry unlocks A+ content, the Store, and brand analytics, and it is gated by the trademark. Filing fees sit outside any agency fee._Gate: the trademark application is filed with your company as owner of record, and you control the Brand Registry admin seat._### 3. Product research This is the stage that decides whether the other five are worth doing. Real research covers market size, growth trajectory, return rate, segment dynamics, and the rating gap in the category. Differentiation should come from clusters of complaints in competitor negative reviews, not from a brainstorm._Gate: you can state, in one paragraph, which documented customer complaint your product fixes and how big the addressable segment is._### 4. Sourcing and quality control Supplier identification, samples, specification sheets, inspections, and compliance documents. This is where product quality is decided, and product quality later shows up as your return rate and your rating._Gate: an inspected sample in hand that matches a written specification, plus compliance documentation on file._### 5. Listing and creative Copy, images, A+ content, and the keyword set behind them. In other languages this means copy written by someone who searches in that language, not translated copy._Gate: the listing answers the top three objections from competitor reviews, visibly, in the images._### 6. Advertising Campaign structure, bids, search-term harvesting, and a written budget with an agreed efficiency target attached to it._Gate: conversion rate sits at or near the category norm, and the first reviews exist, before budget scales beyond the test level._## Decide when to stop before you start Somewhere between stages three and four, write down what would make you stop. This is the piece almost nobody does, and it is the piece I care most about. I once poured money into a failing product for three months, convinced that better advertising would turn it around. It did not. The product was the problem, and every week I delayed the decision cost more than the week before. That experience is where our kill criteria came from, and it is why I now insist on defining them before the first purchase order rather than during the argument. Useful criteria, measured over a defined window: | Signal | Scale | Fix | Kill |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | | Rating trend | Stable at or above category norm | Slipping, cause identified | Falling with quality complaints | | Return rate | At or below category norm | Above norm, single fixable cause | Persistently high, product-level | | Conversion rate | At or above category norm | Below norm, listing untested | Below norm after listing and images fixed | | Cost of acquisition | Trending down as rank builds | Flat, structure untested | Rising with rank and spend both climbing | The point of the table is not the thresholds, which vary by category. It is that all four are agreed in advance, so the decision is arithmetic instead of an argument. ## Bundled or separate You can buy these six from six vendors, from one, or do most of them yourself. The trade is coordination cost against specialization. What actually matters is the same in both cases: who does the work, whether they are employees, and what happens at each gate. For reference on the bundled end, our engagements include the full service set at every tier, from $800 a month for one product up to $2,400 for five, with no commission and no onboarding fee, and about two hours a month of client time once onboarding is done. Whether that shape suits you depends entirely on how many of the six you already have covered. ## What most agencies will not tell you about the starting checklist They will not tell you that stages one and two are cheap and largely administrative, which is why so many "launch packages" lead with them. Registrations are visible progress. They feel like starting. They are also the part you could complete yourself in a week. The stage that decides your outcome is three, and it is the one most likely to be compressed into a slide. If a proposal spends more words on account setup than on how the category will be analyzed, the sequencing tells you what the engagement will actually be. ## Related answers - [How to launch first product on Amazon](https://flapen.com/blog/how-to-launch-first-product-on-amazon) - [Amazon agency experience in new product launches](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-agency-experience-in-new-product-launches) - [What to use if I just need Brand Registry support](https://flapen.com/blog/what-to-use-if-i-just-need-brand-registry-support) - [Alternative to hiring a full-service Amazon agency](https://flapen.com/blog/alternative-to-hiring-a-full-service-amazon-agency) - [Hiring an Amazon agency: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/hiring-an-agency) If you want the six stages handled by one team, the full service list is at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Compare Amazon business models](https://flapen.com/guides/business-models) - [Value your Amazon business](https://flapen.com/tools/business-value-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**Do I need a trademark before I sell anything? Can I skip product research if I already have a supplier? What order should I hire help in?How much of this can I do myself? When do I actually need advertising? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
