Score any niche scouting provider on five criteria: who does the work, data depth beyond reviews and volume, a stated minimum market size, a written differentiation thesis, and whether they will report that no niche passed. ## The short version - **The provider matters more than the tool.** Every service queries the same handful of data sources. - **In-house analysts or middlemen, find out which.** Subcontracted research is unaccountable research. - **A stated market floor is a seriousness test.** Providers without a minimum will pitch you anything. - **The deliverable is a thesis, not a list.** Why this niche, why now, why you. - **A null result is a feature.** A service that always finds a niche is a horoscope. ## The scorecard Most sellers pick a scouting service on portfolio screenshots and price. Both are decorative. What predicts the quality of the work is who performs it and what conclusions the engagement permits, so those carry the heaviest weights here. One hundred points; below seventy, keep looking. | Criterion | Weight | What full marks look like |
| --- | --- | --- | | Who does the work | 30 | Named in-house analysts you can speak to, nothing passed to subcontractors | | Data depth | 25 | Analysis past review counts and volume: return rates, segment shifts, rating distributions | | Stated market floor | 15 | A minimum market size they refuse to work below, told to you before you pay | | Differentiation thesis | 20 | A written argument for how you win, anchored in competitor weaknesses | | Permission to say no | 10 | Pricing that makes a null result a legitimate deliverable | ## Why staffing carries the top weight The test question is one sentence: who does the work and where do they sit. In this industry a polished storefront frequently fronts a chain of subcontractors, and every layer between you and the analyst removes accountability, context, and the ability to ask a follow-up question of the person who actually formed the conclusion. At Flapen the answer to the test is that everything is done by our own staff, with no subcontracting anywhere in the chain, and I hold competitors to the same standard when we evaluate markets they have touched. A scout you cannot meet is a scout you cannot cross-examine, and scouting is exactly the kind of work where cross-examination finds the errors. Our version of the deliverable, scoring included, is the front half of [Flapen's product research](https://flapen.com/amazon-fba-product-research). ## Running the card on a sales call Ask the five questions in scorecard order and write the answers down. Disqualifiers, in my experience: any hesitation about naming who performs the analysis, data depth described only in tool-brand names, no minimum market size at all, a portfolio of picks with no rejected niches in sight, and pricing structured so the engagement only ends when a niche is found. That last one guarantees a niche will be found, which is not the same as a niche existing. ## What scouting services will not tell you A meaningful share of the industry is arbitrage: the service you hire subcontracts the work at a fraction of your fee, and the analyst on your project is three layers from the person who sold it. Null results are commercially awkward, so deliverable formats are built to always produce a winner. And the phrase proprietary data usually means a standard tool subscription with a logo on the export. None of these are scandals. They are why the scorecard weights verification over presentation. ## Related answers - [Rank top Amazon sourcing agencies globally](https://flapen.com/blog/rank-top-amazon-sourcing-agencies-globally) - [Low competition high demand product ideas service](https://flapen.com/blog/low-competition-high-demand-product-ideas-service) - [Compare done-for-you Amazon research providers](https://flapen.com/blog/compare-done-for-you-amazon-research-providers) - [Amazon product gap analysis service worldwide](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-product-gap-analysis-service-worldwide) - [Amazon sourcing and product research services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/sourcing-and-research-services) Run this scorecard on us first if you like, on a call with [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Source the product](https://flapen.com/guides/product-sourcing) - [Calculate the tariff on a shipment](https://flapen.com/tools/tariff-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**How is niche scouting different from full product research? What data should a scout show beyond search volume? Why does subcontracting matter if the report reads well? What is a reasonable minimum market size?Should the same provider handle sourcing afterwards? What does a strong deliverable look like on paper? Why does the pricing structure belong on the scorecard? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
