Score candidates on data sources, refresh cadence, indexation checks, and whether keyword targets change with product stage. Any provider that hands you a keyword list without a ranking plan is selling research, not results. ## The short version - **The list is the cheap part.** Every serious provider draws from similar tool data. - **Score what happens after delivery:** mapping to listing assets, indexation checks, rank tracking. - **Advertising and organic keywords are one system.** An agency running only one side is guessing. - **The stage question is the sharpest filter.** Launch targets and maturity targets should differ. - **Research included beats research invoiced.** We fold it into a flat management fee. ## The scorecard Ask one question before you shortlist anyone: what happens to the keyword list after it is delivered. Amazon keyword research is close to a commodity up to the moment the spreadsheet exists. The value sits entirely in what a provider does next, so that is what the scorecard weighs. Score each criterion 1 to 5, multiply by the weight, and total it out of 500. | Criterion | Weight | What a top score looks like |
| --- | --- | --- | | Data sources | 15 | More than one tool, cross-checked against real search-term reports from live accounts | | Keyword-to-asset mapping | 20 | Every target assigned a home: title, bullets, backend terms, or a campaign | | Indexation verification | 15 | They confirm Amazon actually indexes the listing for each target, and fix it when it does not | | Advertising integration | 25 | Search-term data feeds organic targets, and ad targets change as the product matures | | Refresh cadence | 15 | Re-run on a schedule, with seasonal and competitor shifts folded in | | Rank reporting | 10 | Tracked positions against a baseline, in writing, not a one-time export | Anything under 350 is a research vendor, not a ranking partner. Between 350 and 425, negotiate the gaps. Above 425, check references and move. ## The stage question, and why it carries 25 points The fastest way to separate operators from list-makers is to ask what **ACoS** they target at launch and what they target at maturity. One number for both stages is the tell. At launch the job of advertising is to buy ranking data and velocity on the exact terms the research surfaced, so the target is deliberately aggressive. At maturity the job flips to efficiency. A keyword agency that does not move its targets by stage is optimizing a spreadsheet while the ranking system responds to sales it never planned for. This is also why I distrust keyword research sold as a standalone deliverable. Flapen runs keyword strategy inside day-to-day management of about 70 brands, with our own in-house tooling reading ad data against organic positions weekly. Not because research is hard, but because research divorced from execution has no feedback loop, and without a feedback loop nobody ever finds out the list was wrong. ## What most keyword agencies will not tell you The tools all drink from adjacent wells. Two competent agencies running different software will produce lists that overlap heavily, which means the research fee is mostly paying for judgment, not data. The judgment that matters: which terms your listing can plausibly win at its current review position, and in what order to attack them. The second thing: rank follows sales velocity. Metadata gets you indexed, which is qualification, not victory. A provider promising page one from listing text alone is promising something the ranking system does not sell. The honest pitch connects keywords to a plan for generating sales on those keywords, which is why the advertising integration row carries the most weight on the scorecard. ## Related answers - [SEO vs PPC impact on Amazon rankings](https://flapen.com/blog/seo-vs-ppc-impact-on-amazon-rankings) - [Listing optimization tools and services for Amazon](https://flapen.com/blog/listing-optimization-tools-and-services-for-amazon) - [Which agency is best for Amazon listing optimization](https://flapen.com/blog/which-agency-is-best-for-amazon-listing-optimization) - [Rank Amazon agencies by PPC performance](https://flapen.com/blog/rank-amazon-agencies-by-ppc-performance) - [Amazon brand management tiers: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/brand-tiers) See how keyword work fits inside a flat monthly fee at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Compare Amazon business models](https://flapen.com/guides/business-models) - [Value your Amazon business](https://flapen.com/tools/business-value-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**Is keyword research a one-time project or ongoing work?Do I need an agency, or is a tool subscription enough? How do keyword targets differ between launch and maturity? How many keywords should one listing target? What should keyword research cost? What does a score between 350 and 425 tell me? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
