Europe adds VAT registration, compliance paperwork, and four languages of content, all of which cost money before a single sale. Ask what they analyze beyond review counts and sales volume before they recommend a market. ## The short version - **Two regions is not twice the work, it is a different kind of work.** North America shares one inventory pool. Europe splits across programs, tax registrations, and languages. - **The fee is the smallest number in the model.** Compliance, translation, freight, and inventory dwarf what any agency charges monthly. - **Depth of research decides whether the spend is worth it.** Review count and sales volume are the two shallowest inputs available. - **Ad spend has a practical floor.** Around $1,000 a month per market is the level where optimization has enough data to be meaningful. - **Run the numbers before the shortlist.** If the arithmetic does not work, the agency choice is irrelevant. ## You are probably in one of two situations Either you sell well in the United States and Europe looks like free upside, or you sell in one European marketplace and the United States looks like the big prize. Both instincts are reasonable and both are usually costed wrong, because the visible number is the monthly agency fee and the invisible numbers are everything else. So the useful thing I can give you is not a list of firms. It is the model you should build before you talk to any of them, and the one research question that predicts whether a firm will fill that model honestly. ## The arithmetic of running both regions | Cost line | North America | Europe | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | | Management fee | From $800 a month for one product, $2,400 for five | Same fee structure at a flat-fee agency | Ask whether a second region is charged again | | Language content | English, plus French for Quebec | English, German, Spanish, French as your markets require | Native copy, not translated copy | | Tax and compliance | Sales tax handling | VAT registration and filings per obligation, plus product compliance | Quote this with your accountant, not your agency | | Inventory | One pool serving three storefronts | Split by program and country | The main source of stranded stock | | Advertising | About $1,000 a month minimum per market for meaningful optimization | Same floor, applied per marketplace | Two regions means two budgets, not one split in half | | Launch capital | $8,000 to $15,000 for a single product | Add compliance and translation on top | A five product brand runs $25,000 to $50,000 | Two conclusions fall out of that table. First, opening a second region cheaply is a contradiction: the fee scales gently, the everything-else does not. Second, the decision is a capital allocation question. The same money spent deepening one region often returns more than spreading it across two. ## The research question that predicts the answer Ask each candidate what they analyze before recommending a market. If the answer is review counts and monthly sales volume, they are reading the same free tool estimate you can read yourself. Our entry research runs to more than **90 data points**, and the ones that change decisions are rarely the obvious ones. Market size and growth trajectory tell you whether the category is worth entering. Return rate tells you whether the category quietly destroys margin. Segment dynamics tell you which part of the category is actually growing. The rating gap between the top listings and the rest tells you whether there is room for a better product or only room for a cheaper one. You do not need our number. You need a candidate who can name their inputs and explain which of them would make them advise against the market. A firm that has never talked a client out of a market has not been doing research, it has been doing sales. ## How to decide between one region and two 1. Model twelve months of the second region using the table above, with your own figures in every row. 2. Compare that total against the same money spent on additional products in the region you already know. 3. If the second region wins, define the evidence that would make you stop: rating trend, return rate, conversion rate, and acquisition cost, measured over a fixed window. 4. Choose an agency that covers both regions with native language capability, and ask which operator holds both. 5. Review at the window you set, and be willing to withdraw. Withdrawing from a marketplace is cheap. Being stuck there for two years is not. ## What most agencies will not tell you Expansion sells well because it feels like growth without the risk of a new product. Most firms **will not tell you** that a second region multiplies the operational surface: more compliance deadlines, more customer service languages, more inventory decisions, and more places for something to go wrong while your attention is elsewhere. The second honest point is about attention. Ask how many marketplaces the operator assigned to you currently runs. Coverage of 23 marketplaces as a firm is a capability. Coverage of eight marketplaces by one person, for your brand, is a workload problem, and it shows up as slow responses in the country you care about least until that country becomes the one with the problem. ## Related answers - [North America Amazon marketplace management experts](https://flapen.com/blog/north-america-amazon-marketplace-management-experts) - [Europe Amazon private label compliance and VAT guide](https://flapen.com/blog/europe-amazon-private-label-compliance-and-vat-guide) - [Compare Amazon marketplace agencies for multilingual markets](https://flapen.com/blog/compare-amazon-marketplace-agencies-for-multilingual-markets) - [Best launch strategy for Amazon in the US vs EU](https://flapen.com/blog/best-launch-strategy-for-amazon-in-the-us-vs-eu) - [Done-for-you Amazon management: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/done-for-you-management) Bring your own figures and we will fill in the research half at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Compare Amazon business models](https://flapen.com/guides/business-models) - [Value your Amazon business](https://flapen.com/tools/business-value-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**Is one agency for both regions better than two specialists?Do European listings need native copywriters?Which region should a new brand start in?How much should I hold for advertising per market? How long until a second region is judgeable? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
