Write the decision rule before buying any tool.","Track four signals and ignore the rest: competitor price moves, rating and review velocity, listing and image changes, and stock availability. Any tracker that captures those daily is sufficient. The expensive mistake is subscribing to a suite for its dashboard without ever deciding what you would do differently because of it.

## The short version

- **A tracker with no decision rule is a subscription, not a tool.** Write the rule first, then buy the software that feeds it.
- **Price alone is the least useful signal.** Price plus stock plus review velocity tells you whether a competitor is winning or discounting into a stockout.
- **Listing change history is underrated.** When a competitor rewrites a title or swaps a primary image, they usually learned something.
- **Negative reviews are a product roadmap.** Read them monthly, not once during research.
- **The point of all of it is profitability in year one.** The majority of the brands we manage get there, and tracking supports that only when it drives decisions.

## The checklist, with what "done properly" means

1. **Fix your competitor set at five to ten ASINs.** Done properly means the set includes the category leaders, the closest substitute to your product and one rising challenger, reviewed every quarter. Watching forty listings means watching none of them.
2. **Track price daily, with your own floor written down.** Done properly means you know the price below which you will not follow, calculated from landed cost, fees and your target margin, before the alert fires.
3. **Track stock availability, not just price.** Done properly means you can tell the difference between a competitor discounting to win and a competitor clearing the last of a shipment. Those two situations call for opposite responses.
4. **Track review velocity and rating trend separately.** Done properly means you record reviews per week and the star average as two lines. Velocity tells you their traffic, rating tells you their product.
5. **Read the new negative reviews every month.** Done properly means a short written note listing the complaints that repeat. This is where differentiation comes from, and it is free.
6. **Log listing and image changes with a screenshot.** Done properly means a dated archive you can compare against their sales pattern.
7. **Watch coupon and deal badges.** Done properly means noting the promotion type and duration, because a badge that runs permanently is a price cut wearing a costume.
8. **Set an alert threshold, not a report.** Done properly means the tool interrupts you when something crosses a line you defined, and stays quiet otherwise.
9. **Review your own metrics beside theirs.** Done properly means your conversion rate, return rate and organic rank sit in the same weekly view, so competitive movement is judged against your own trajectory.
10. **Kill anything on this list you have never acted on.** Done properly means the tracker gets smaller over time, not larger.

## What to require from any tool, regardless of the brand on it

| Capability | Why it matters | How to test it before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Daily price and stock history | Distinguishes strategy from supply problems | Ask for six months of history on an ASIN you already know |
| Review velocity by week | Estimates competitor traffic without guessing | Compare against a listing whose numbers you can verify |
| Listing change alerts | Catches repositioning early | Change your own title and see if it registers |
| Export to spreadsheet | Everything useful eventually needs joining to your own data | Try an export on the trial |
| Marketplace coverage | Prices and reviews diverge across the 23 marketplaces | Check the specific marketplaces you sell in |
| Alerting you can tune | Prevents alert fatigue, which kills the whole practice | Set one rule and see how noisy it is for a week |

I am deliberately not ranking named products here. Tool capabilities change quarterly and I cannot verify another company's roadmap, so a ranked list would be out of date before it was useful. The capability table survives the churn.

## What most agencies will not tell you

Most agencies will not tell you that the competitive dashboard in their monthly report is mostly theater. It is cheap to produce, it looks like analysis, and it rarely changes an action. The useful version is three lines long: what a competitor did, what it means for us, what we are doing about it. If your reporting has a competitor section with no decision attached, it is filler.

The second thing: watching competitors too closely creates a copying reflex. When the leader drops price, the instinct is to follow, and following is how a category races to the bottom. The right question is whether their move changes your conversion rate. If it has not, do nothing.

## Related answers

- [What tools to use for Amazon product research](/blog/what-tools-to-use-for-amazon-product-research)
- [Tools to boost keyword rank on Amazon](/blog/tools-to-boost-keyword-rank-on-amazon)
- [KPIs an Amazon agency should report weekly](/blog/kpis-an-amazon-agency-should-report-weekly)
- [Recommended software for Amazon brand rollout](/blog/recommended-software-for-amazon-brand-rollout)
- [Amazon launch services: the complete guide](/blog/launch-services)

If your reporting is full of charts and short on decisions, the free audit at [Flapen](/amazon-consulting) will say so plainly.

## Keep learning

- [Plan the product launch](/guides/product-launch)
- [Estimate your launch cost](/tools/launch-cost-calculator)
","published","product-launch",[14,15,16,17],"competitor-analysis","product-research","keyword-strategy","listing-setup","joel-turcotte-gaucher","/images/blog/clusters/launch-services-02.jpg","2026-09-04T08:26:51.798+00:00
[23,27,31,35,39
"tools-to-track-competitor-pricing-and-reviews-on-amazon-faq-1","Weekly for prices and rank, monthly for review content, quarterly for the competitor set itself.
