![Flapen cover for TACoS Calculation for Amazon Sellers, Stage by Stage: an account audit over printed charts with a magnifying glass and a highlighter](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fblog%2Fclusters%2Fmeasurement-and-audit-04.jpg&w=1536&q=100) TACoS, or total advertising cost of sale, is every advertising dollar divided by every sale in the same window, written as a percentage. Run the calculation on one product, in one marketplace, for one calendar month. An account-wide figure blends your strongest product with your weakest, so it decides nothing. ## The short version - **One ratio, two totals.** All advertising spend on top, all sales underneath, same product and same window. - **The unit is the product.** One parent ASIN in one marketplace is the smallest honest unit. - **The numerator holds DSP and creator spend.** Anything paid to produce those sales belongs in it, or the ratio flatters you. - **The denominator is total sales.** Ad-attributed and organic together, which is the whole difference between TACoS and ACoS. - **A month is a data point.** Twelve months is a verdict on whether the product paid for itself in year one. ## The calculation, stage by stage The division is the easy part. Every wrong TACoS number I have opened came from a mismatched window or a spend line nobody added, never from the arithmetic. Five stages, in order. Each has a gate that lets you move to the next. | Stage | What it proves | Gate |
| --- | --- | --- | | 1. Fix the unit and the window | One parent ASIN, one marketplace, one calendar month | You can name the product and the month before you open a report | | 2. Add every advertising dollar spent against the product | Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands, Sponsored Display, DSP, and whatever you paid a creator to post | Your total ties to the billing total for that month, to the dollar | | 3. Add every sale of the product in the same window | Ordered product sales, ad-attributed and organic in one figure | The denominator comes out of the same report every month | | 4. Divide, then write the percentage where the money is | The ratio sits on the row that carries the margin left after landed cost and Amazon fees | The row shows whether the product paid for its own advertising that month | | 5. Repeat monthly and read the direction | The direction across a year, because a single month settles nothing | Twelve rows and a trend before anybody argues about the level | Flapen figures as of September 2026. | Input | Where it comes from | Worked month |
| --- | --- | --- | | Sponsored Products, Brands, and Display | Campaign manager, filtered to the ASIN | $2,100 | | DSP and creator spend on the same product | The DSP console and your creator invoices | $400 | | Total advertising, the numerator | The two rows above, added | $2,500 | | Total sales, ad-attributed and organic | Ordered product sales, same month, same marketplace | $20,000 | | TACoS | $2,500 divided by $20,000 | 12.5% | A worked example on one product, not a client account. ## The first year is the test this number has to pass Here is the outcome I hold my own team to. The majority of the brands we run reach profitability inside their first year, and 50 operators carry about 70 brands by hand to get there. TACoS is the cheapest early read on that outcome, because it moves months before a profit and loss statement does. Month one and month twelve are not the same measurement. In month one almost no organic base sits in the denominator, so the ratio starts high and has to fall as reviews, rank, and repeat buyers arrive. A first year where it never falls is the year to worry about. Two published figures show what the mature end looks like on accounts we run. On SnoreLessNow, the anti-snoring sleep brand, the figure is TACoS 10.8% to 9.9%. On Vora Bowl, the chilled serving bowls brand, it is 5.7% TACoS at scale. Both are ratios, and neither is a dollar profit figure. Read them as the shape a settled account takes, never as a target for your month three. We operate across all 23 Amazon marketplaces, and one catalog carries a different ratio in each. ## What the number gates next A calculated TACoS earns its place only when a decision hangs on it. It gates three moves, in order, each with the check that closes it. 1. **Hold.** The ratio is flat or falling while unit sales hold or grow. Nothing changes until the next monthly reading. 2. **Fix.** The ratio is climbing, so diagnose before the budget moves, across listing quality, primary image click-through rate, conversion rate, ad performance, traffic channel activation, pricing, and return rate. One named cause and one named owner before another dollar goes out. 3. **Stop.** Four signals decide it: rating trend, return rate, conversion rate, and cost of customer acquisition trajectory. Kill the product if none of them improves inside the 60 to 90 days you wrote down in advance. ## What most agencies will not tell you about a TACoS number Three things stay quiet in reporting meetings, and on a lazy month that includes ours. Each carries the check that settles it. | What stays quiet | Why it happens | The check that settles it |
| --- | --- | --- | | The ratio falls on its own as a brand ages | Review equity and repeat buyers take over work that advertising did earlier | Look at whether unit sales grew in the same months before you credit anyone | | The number is improved by spending less | Half the campaigns paused drops TACoS next month, and rank, velocity, and units with it | Ask for units and organic rank printed next to any improvement claim | | The account chart is calmer than the products under it | Twelve products blended into one average hide the two that are bleeding | Refuse the account-level chart until the per product table sits underneath it | The three quiet facts and the check that settles each one. Hold us to the same three. Our reporting is a written update in Slack every week and a live review every two weeks, so if the per product table is not in it, do not hire us. ## Related answers - [ACoS meaning](https://flapen.com/blog/acos-meaning) - [Amazon PPC](https://flapen.com/blog/ppc-amazon) - [Amazon suspension appeal help in Dubai](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-suspension-appeal-help-in-dubai) - [Best Amazon growth audit services for FBA sellers](https://flapen.com/blog/best-amazon-growth-audit-services-for-fba-sellers) - [Amazon account measurement and audits: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/measurement-and-audit) This week, at no cost, pull last month's advertising spend and ordered product sales for your biggest product, run the five stages, and write the percentage at the top of a sheet. Divide that product's total advertising spend for the month by its total sales for the same month, then multiply by one hundred. Total sales means ad-attributed and organic added together, not the ad sales column. Hold both figures to the same window and the same marketplace, or the answer is fiction. What counts as a healthy TACoS? The level that still leaves the margin you refuse to give up after landed cost, fees, and returns. A product with 40 points of margin carries a ratio that would sink a product with 18. Judge the direction first, then the level against your own margin.Do DSP and creator spend belong in the calculation? Yes, when the money was spent to produce those Amazon sales. Leave it out and the ratio improves on paper while the cash still leaves your account. Keep each source on its own line so the mix stays visible. Why does my number differ from the one my agency reports? Almost always the window or the unit. A rolling 30 days at account level will never match your calendar month for one ASIN. Ask which window, which marketplace, and which sales report, then rebuild the figure together and fix the definition in writing.![The Flapen Weekly Product Research report, an Amazon niche shortlist scored 0–100 with its score radar on the cover](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fhomepage%2Famazon-product-research-report-dark.webp&w=640&q=100) The weekly niche report ## Product research, in your inbox Every niche that cleared the bar this week.
