Earn length only when the product carries objections that take time to defuse, assembly, installation, or technique. Either way, structure for early exits, since most viewers will not see your final third regardless of runtime. ## The short version - **Watch time is rented attention at comparison speed,** and the meter runs faster than sellers assume. - **Short wins by default** because the marginal viewer at second 70 is nearly gone in most categories. - **Length is justified by objections, not by enthusiasm.** Complex setup, safety-critical use, and technique products earn longer runtimes. - **Front-loading beats trimming:** a 90-second video whose first 20 seconds carry the whole argument outperforms a balanced 45. - **The checklist below decides it in five minutes,** and reruns cheaply whenever the product or market changes. ## The checklist that settles runtime Work through the items in order. "Done properly" is defined for each. 1. **Count the objections that need motion.** List what stops a shopper buying, from competitor reviews and your customer questions, then mark which objections need moving pictures rather than a still image. Done properly: a written list, typically two to five items, each tagged image or video. Zero video-tagged objections means you barely need a video at all, so make it 30 seconds and move on. 2. **Time an honest demonstration of each.** Film rough phone takes of each video-tagged objection being answered. Done properly: real seconds measured, not guessed. A pour-over kettle's flow control needs six seconds; a furniture assembly needs forty. 3. **Add the fixed overhead.** Hook, identity, and scale cost about ten to fifteen seconds in any listing video. Done properly: overhead plus demonstrations gives you a floor runtime. If the floor is under 60 seconds, stop, you have a short video, which is most products. 4. **Justify every second past 60.** Done properly: each extra beat names the objection it answers and the evidence that shoppers hold that objection. "Buyers might also like" is not an objection. Appliances with installation anxiety, technique-dependent tools, and safety-relevant baby gear pass this gate. Kitchen gadgets do not. 5. **Front-load regardless of the answer.** Done properly: the strongest proof sits inside the first 20 seconds, and the video would still convert if playback stopped there. Long videos fail not by existing but by saving the good part. 6. **Re-check after localization.** Done properly: runtime is revisited per marketplace. Demonstration needs shift with market familiarity; a product category mature in the US may be novel in Spain and need the longer cut there. We localize video and content in English, German, Spanish, and French, and runtime is one of the things that changes. ## Why the physical product decides more than the editor The honest determinant of runtime is how much explaining the physical object needs, and that is set long before the edit, at sourcing. A product whose quality is visible, solid casting, clean stitching, obvious material weight, makes its case in seconds of close-up. A product whose value hides in tolerances and internals needs demonstration time to earn belief. This is why runtime debates are often misplaced product debates. Across the 500+ brands our sourcing frameworks were built on, the pattern repeats: products specified with visible, filmable differentiation get cheap, short, high-converting videos, while products differentiated on invisible internals pay for that choice at every stage downstream, longer videos, harder listings, weaker click-through. If you are still at the selection stage, weigh filmability as a real criterion; it is one of the quieter things a disciplined [product research](https://flapen.com/amazon-fba-product-research) process scores before capital commits. Our Guangzhou team's spec work feeds the studio directly, so the shot list and the sample arrive together. ## The comparison in numbers | Factor | Short (30 to 60s) | Long (60 to 120s) |
| --- | --- | --- | | Fits comparison-stage attention | Yes | Only with front-loading | | Handles setup or technique objections | Poorly | Well | | Production cost | Lower | Higher, more shoot time | | Risk of burying the argument | Low | High without discipline | | Reusable in ad placements | Usually as-is | Needs a cut-down | | Best-fit categories | Most consumer goods | Appliances, furniture, technical gear | ## What production houses will not tell you A studio will not tell you that runtime moves their quote more than your conversion, because shoot days and edit hours scale with length. When a vendor recommends the two-minute brand film, ask which objection each block of seconds answers. The checklist above is the negotiation; run it in front of them. The other silence is about where long content belongs when it does deserve to exist. Deep demonstrations often serve better as A+ content modules, ad creative, or an off-Amazon asset than as one long listing video, because those placements meet viewers with more patience. A vendor selling one long deliverable rarely raises the option of two short ones placed correctly, though the footage cost is nearly identical. ## Related answers - [What to include in an Amazon listing product video](https://flapen.com/blog/what-to-include-in-an-amazon-listing-product-video) - [Tips to boost conversion with Amazon listing videos](https://flapen.com/blog/tips-to-boost-conversion-with-amazon-listing-videos) - [UGC vs studio for Amazon listing videos](https://flapen.com/blog/ugc-vs-studio-for-amazon-listing-videos) - [Amazon product video services and pricing](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-product-video-services-and-pricing) - [Amazon sourcing and product research services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/sourcing-and-research-services) If you want runtime decided by objections and filmability instead of a studio's day rate, brief the video through [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Source the product](https://flapen.com/guides/product-sourcing) - [Calculate the tariff on a shipment](https://flapen.com/tools/tariff-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**What is the ideal length for an Amazon listing video?Do long videos hurt conversion by existing?Should I make one long video or several short ones?Does video length affect Amazon search ranking? How do I test whether my video is too long? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
