Price the fee per managed hour, not as a percentage.","Buy three things during a launch: campaign structure, weekly management, and creative that converts. Anything else is optional. Price the service against the ad spend it manages and the hours it actually receives, because a fee that looks small next to a large budget can still be poor value per hour.

## The short version

- **Three components matter.** Structure, weekly hands-on management, and ad creative. The rest is reporting.
- **Convert the fee into cost per managed hour.** That number is comparable across proposals. A percentage is not.
- **A poor page makes advertising expensive.** The click cost is set partly by what happens after the click.
- **Automation manages, it does not decide.** Rules adjust bids. People choose which terms deserve budget.
- **Launch advertising is a learning budget.** Judge the first weeks on data gathered, not on efficiency.

## The mechanism: advertising cost is downstream of conversion

Advertising during a launch is a price you pay for information and position. What that price is depends less on your bidding skill than people assume, and more on what the listing does with the traffic. A page that closes badly makes every bid more expensive than it looks on the report, because you are paying full rate for clicks that were never going to end in an order. Raising the budget against that page enlarges the same result rather than changing it.

This is why the service you buy for launch advertising should include, or at least insist on, work on the page itself. A provider who will optimize bids against a listing they are not allowed to touch is being set up to fail, and will usually take the fee anyway.

## What the money buys, line by line

| Component | What it costs you | What happens without it |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign architecture | Once, at the start | Search terms and budgets blend, and no result is readable |
| Weekly management | The bulk of any sensible fee | Negatives pile up, wasted spend compounds silently |
| Ad creative | Production time or a studio | You compete on bid alone, which is the expensive way |
| Keyword research feeding the ads | Front-loaded analysis | Budget spreads across terms you cannot win |
| Reporting and review | Small, but do not skip it | Nobody notices the trend until the quarter ends |
| Bid automation | A tool subscription, optionally | Manual adjustment, slower but perfectly workable |

Note which line is largest. Weekly management is the recurring work, and it is the line most often quietly reduced when a fee is negotiated down. Structure is a one-off. Creative is periodic. Attention is continuous, and it is the thing you are actually renting.

## Turn every proposal into one comparable number

1. **Write down the monthly fee.** For a percentage-of-spend model, calculate it at your planned budget, then again at twice that budget.
2. **Ask how many hours per month your account receives**, and who provides them.
3. **Divide fee by hours.** That is your cost per managed hour, and it is the only figure that compares cleanly across pricing models.
4. **Ask how many other accounts that person handles.** It tells you whether the hours quoted are realistic.
5. **Add the tool subscriptions** you will pay separately, so you are comparing total cost of the function.

Do that for three proposals and the differences become obvious in a way that feature lists never allow. A flat fee that includes everything and a percentage that looks cheaper at today's spend often reverse position the moment your budget grows.

Our own frameworks were built across more than 500 brands, and the part that transfers between them is structure rather than bids. Categories differ, seasonality differs, margin structures differ. What holds constant is how campaigns should be segmented so that the data is readable, which is why architecture is worth paying for once and properly.

## The launch-specific part

Launch advertising is not steady-state advertising with a bigger budget. In the first weeks you are buying discovery: which terms convert, at what price, against which competitors. Efficiency in that period is a secondary concern, and a provider who optimizes hard for it too early will starve you of the data you are paying to collect.

Set a review point instead. Agree in advance what you expect to know by a given date, and what decision that knowledge triggers. Measurable improvement in advertising efficiency typically shows within the first 30 days once structure and the page are both sound. If nothing has moved by then, the problem is upstream of the bids.

## What most agencies will not tell you

A percentage of ad spend is the most common way to price this work and the least defensible. Your objective is the lowest possible acquisition cost. Their revenue rises as your budget does. The conflict is invisible while everything grows and becomes acute precisely when the honest advice is to spend less.

The second thing: a great deal of advertising management is automated, and that is fine. Rules and bulk operations do the mechanical adjustments faster than a person can. What automation cannot do is decide that a term is not worth owning, or notice that returns are climbing because the packaging is failing in transit. Ask what a human looks at each week, by name and by task, and how long it takes them.

## Related answers

- [Best practices for FBA PPC during launch](/blog/best-practices-for-fba-ppc-during-launch)
- [When to start PPC in an Amazon launch timeline](/blog/when-to-start-ppc-in-an-amazon-launch-timeline)
- [Fair Amazon agency pricing models](/blog/fair-amazon-agency-pricing-models)
- [Agencies that handle listing creation images and PPC](/blog/agencies-that-handle-listing-creation-images-and-ppc)
- [Amazon launch services: the complete guide](/blog/launch-services)

Bring us two competing proposals and we will convert all three, ours included, into cost per managed hour at [Flapen](/amazon-consulting).

## Keep learning

- [Plan the product launch](/guides/product-launch)
- [Estimate your launch cost](/tools/launch-cost-calculator)
","published","product-launch",[14,15,16,17],"ppc","keyword-strategy","listing-setup","fees","joel-turcotte-gaucher","/images/blog/clusters/launch-services-06.jpg","2026-09-04T08:20:51.798+00:00
[23,27,31,35,39
"recommended-services-for-amazon-ppc-during-launch-faq-1","There is no hard minimum, but about $1,000 a month is where optimization becomes meaningful.
