Sales history and keyword relevance do not transfer, so a German listing starts from zero even when your American one is established. Build native keyword sets, confirm indexation in each locale, then fund every country its own advertising until organic rank holds. Copying the American plan is the standard failure. ## The short version - **Relevance is earned per marketplace.** Even where reviews syndicate between countries, your rank does not travel with them. - **A translated listing indexes for translated phrases**, which is not the same set of phrases local buyers type. - **Check indexation before blaming the budget.** Half of the ranking problems I see in Europe are terms the listing never indexed for. - **Campaign structure has to be rebuilt per language.** Copied campaigns inherit search terms from the wrong market. - **Ask who writes the local copy and where they sit.** That answer predicts the quality of everything downstream. ## The failure modes, and what each one looks like in your data The mistake almost everyone makes is treating a European rollout as a distribution task. The listing exists, the product exists, so the assumption is that opening Germany means pressing publish in German. What actually happens is that a listing arrives with no history, no local relevance, and a keyword set imported from a different language, and it competes against sellers who built theirs natively. | Failure mode | What you see in the data | What it actually is | First move |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | | Translated listing | Impressions concentrated on a few generic terms | Your keyword set belongs to another language | Native keyword research, then rewrite | | Never checked indexation | Zero impressions on terms you believe you target | The listing is not eligible for those searches | Verify indexation term by term, fix the fields | | Copied campaign structure | Spend distributed oddly, poor relevance scores | Search terms harvested in a different market | Rebuild campaigns from the local keyword set | | Pooled budget across countries | One market consumes almost everything | The cheapest auction absorbs shared budget | Separate line per marketplace, defined window | | Judging a market on a month | Conclusion that Germany does not work | Not enough velocity to establish any rank | Hold a defined window before deciding | | Local variant fields left empty | Weak conversion despite decent traffic | Buyers cannot confirm fit, size, or compliance detail | Complete every attribute in the local language | ### Translation is not keyword research German is the clearest example because compound nouns mean the phrase shoppers actually type frequently has no clean English equivalent. Translate your American title and you produce a grammatically correct listing that competes for phrases with little search behind them. Research the language natively and you find the terms that carry the volume, then write to those. ### Indexation before optimization Before any conclusion about competitiveness, confirm the listing is actually eligible to appear for your priority terms in that marketplace. This is unglamorous, it takes an afternoon, and it regularly explains a result that has been blamed on the budget for a quarter. ### Velocity is what converts relevance into rank Rank follows evidence, and evidence means orders against a term at a reasonable conversion rate. That is why each marketplace needs its own advertising line long enough to accumulate it. Around $1,000 a month per country is where there is enough data to optimize, and a pooled budget guarantees that at least one country never reaches that threshold. ## The ranking plan, in order 1. **Research keywords natively** in the target language, with the local marketplace's own data. 2. **Build the listing to those terms**, title, bullets, backend fields, and every attribute the category offers. 3. **Adapt imagery where local expectations differ**, including any information the main image needs to carry. 4. **Verify indexation** for every priority term before spending anything. 5. **Launch campaigns built from the local keyword set**, structured so that exact, phrase, and broad targeting each have a job. 6. **Fund a defined window per marketplace**, then read conversion rate and cost per order weekly against that country's own baseline. 7. **Move budget toward the terms that convert**, and let organic rank take over as advertising cost per order falls. 8. **Only then decide** whether the market works. A decision made before this sequence completes is a decision about your patience, not about the market. ## What most agencies will not tell you European ranking work is the part of this industry most likely to be quietly handed to someone else, and most agencies will not tell you that the German keyword research and copy behind your listing was commissioned from a freelancer, reviewed by nobody who reads German, and delivered against a brief written in English. At Flapen there is no subcontracting. Everything is done in house by employees, content is produced in English, German, Spanish, and French, and we operate across all 23 Amazon marketplaces. That is not a claim you should accept from anyone, including me, without testing it. Ask three questions of any candidate: who writes the local copy, are they an employee or a contractor, and can you see the local keyword list before copy is commissioned. Vague answers to those questions are the answer. ## Related answers - [Europe vs US Amazon launch costs comparison](https://flapen.com/blog/europe-vs-us-amazon-launch-costs-comparison) - [Keyword research workflow for Amazon newbies](https://flapen.com/blog/keyword-research-workflow-for-amazon-newbies) - [Global expansion roadmap for Amazon marketplaces](https://flapen.com/blog/global-expansion-roadmap-for-amazon-marketplaces) - [How to choose an Amazon FBA marketing partner](https://flapen.com/blog/how-to-choose-an-amazon-fba-marketing-partner) - [Amazon launch services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/launch-services) Ask to see a local keyword list built for your category before you commit to anything at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Plan the product launch](https://flapen.com/guides/product-launch) - [Estimate your launch cost](https://flapen.com/tools/launch-cost-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**Do reviews carry across European marketplaces? How long before a European listing ranks organically? Can I run one advertising campaign across several countries? What is the first thing to check when a European listing gets no traffic?Should I open several European marketplaces at once? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
