What you can rank is fit. Compare agency archetypes on incentive structure, account load per manager, who does the work, and exit terms, then score candidates yourself against those criteria. ## The short version - **Global rankings have no data behind them.** Nobody outside an agency sees its client results. - **Rank archetypes, then candidates.** The structural choice matters more than the logo. - **Incentives are the first filter.** How the fee is computed predicts the advice you will get. - **The worldwide part is a red herring.** You need coverage of your marketplaces, not all of them. - **Run your own scoring.** Three calls and one question set beat any listicle. ## Why the ranking you searched for does not exist I run an agency, so read this knowing that, but the logic stands on its own. To rank PPC agencies you would need audited performance across their client bases, normalized for category, stage, and budget. That data is confidential in every agency on earth, mine included. Any list claiming a global order is ranking marketing budgets and link-building effort, and the way to check is to ask the list's publisher one question: how was this compiled. The answer is never client account data, because it cannot be. So replace the unanswerable question with the answerable one: which structure of agency fits your brand, and which candidate within that structure survives your scoring. ## The comparison that actually works Four archetypes cover nearly every PPC vendor worldwide. | Archetype | Strength | Structural weakness | Fits |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | | Ad-spend percentage agency | Scales attention with big budgets | Fee grows when your spend grows, whatever happens to margin | Large brands that police the incentive themselves | | PPC-only boutique | Deep in the ad console | Ads optimized in isolation from listing, price, and stock | Sellers with strong operations needing pure execution | | Full-service operator agency | Ads sit inside the whole P&L | Costs more than a single-channel shop | Brands that want one owner for outcomes | | Freelancer or consultant | Cheap, direct, flexible | One person's bandwidth and vacation schedule | Small accounts and first professionalisation | The reason I run Flapen as the third archetype is that advertising is rarely the actual problem. Ad results are downstream of product quality, listing conversion, pricing, and stock. Our sourcing runs through our own Guangzhou studio with frameworks built across 500+ brands, creative through our Dubai studio, and PPC through the same operator who owns the rest of that brand's P&L. When the ads plateau, the fix is often an image, a price, or a supplier, and a PPC-only vendor cannot reach any of those levers. Judge for yourself whether that argument applies to your situation, and if your operations are already excellent, a boutique may serve you better. Score your shortlist, whatever archetype, on five questions: 1. How is your fee computed, and does it rise when my ad spend rises? 2. How many accounts does the person on my account manage? 3. Who exactly does the work, employees or subcontractors, and where? 4. What would make you tell me to reduce spend or kill a product? 5. What do I keep, and how fast can I leave? For reference, our answer is month-to-month, 30 days' notice, and you keep the account, campaigns, and a written handover, terms listed openly at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## What agency rankings will not tell you Many top-ten lists are commercial inventory. Placements are sold, affiliate fees flow when you click through, and the criteria section is written after the order is decided. Some directories do honest curation, but you cannot tell which from the outside, which makes every list equally unusable as evidence. Rankings also cannot see the variable that will decide your outcome: who specifically gets assigned to your account. Agencies are not uniform inside. The same firm contains its best manager and its newest hire, and no list operates at that resolution. Your interview does, which is why the five questions above are worth more than any ordering of logos. ## Related answers - [Best Amazon agency for DSP optimization](https://flapen.com/blog/best-amazon-agency-for-dsp-optimization) - [Amazon PPC benchmarks ACoS ROAS TACOS](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-ppc-benchmarks-acos-roas-tacos) - [Questions to ask before hiring an Amazon consultant Europe](https://flapen.com/blog/questions-to-ask-before-hiring-an-amazon-consultant-europe) - [Rank providers for DSP and PPC combined audits](https://flapen.com/blog/rank-providers-for-dsp-and-ppc-combined-audits) - [Amazon account measurement and audits: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/measurement-and-audit) Put us through the same five questions as everyone else, starting with the free audit at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Run Amazon advertising](https://flapen.com/guides/advertising) - [Run the review math](https://flapen.com/tools/review-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**How should I shortlist PPC agencies without a ranking?Does a PPC agency need to be in my country? Are award badges evidence of quality? What does a fair PPC management fee look like?Should PPC be separated from the rest of account management? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
