Tier one sells idea lists. Tier two validates a market with sizing, review analysis, and unit economics. Tier three carries the research through supplier selection and a small first production run. Full launch research means all six stages below, each with a pass-or-stop gate. ## The short version - **Named rankings are marketing.** Nobody outside a provider can verify their hit rate, so rank by what the deliverable covers. - **Coverage has three tiers.** Ideas, validated ideas, and validated ideas carried into a real production test. - **Six stages define "full".** Sizing, segment analysis, economics, supplier plan, validation run, scale decision. - **Every stage needs a gate.** A stage without a stop condition is a formality, not research. - **Price against the stage list.** A low quote usually means missing stages, and the missing stages are the expensive ones to skip. ## Why I will not rank providers by name I sell launch research, so a list with my company on top would be exactly as trustworthy as every other list with its author on top. The deeper problem is that the data a real ranking needs, launch survival rates, capital efficiency, how often a provider told a client to stop, is private everywhere. What can be verified is scope. Ask any service which of the six stages below they perform and where their involvement ends, and the market ranks itself in front of you. ## The six stages of full launch research 1. **Market sizing.** Estimate annual revenue for the niche with the method shown. The gate: we require at least **$2 million per year** in market size, because below that there is not enough revenue to capture profitably once acquisition costs are paid. Whatever floor a provider uses, they should state it before quoting. 2. **Segment and review analysis.** Map the sub-segments, read the incumbent reviews, and extract the complaint patterns a new product could fix. The gate: a differentiation angle you can state in one sentence, sourced from evidence rather than invention. 3. **Unit economics.** Landed cost, fees, expected acquisition cost, contribution margin. The gate: the product still makes money at realistic launch-stage costs, not just at the steady state. 4. **Supplier and sample plan.** Candidate factories, sample rounds, specification drafts. The gate: a sample in hand whose landed cost matches the model from stage three. 5. **Validation run.** A small first production order sells before big money moves. Ours is Phase 1: about **200 units** and **$5,000 to $10,000**, with up to four products tested at once. The gate: rating, conversion rate, and acquisition cost all clear the thresholds written down in advance. 6. **Scale decision.** Only after the validation metrics prove out does the reorder get placed. The gate is the written criteria themselves. If nobody defined them at stage five, stage six becomes a mood. ## Placing any service in a tier | Tier | Stages covered | What you are actually buying |
| --- | --- | --- | | 1 | Stage 1 partially | A filtered export with commentary | | 2 | Stages 1 to 3 | An argument for a product, unproven | | 3 | Stages 1 to 6 | A tested product with evidence behind the reorder | Tier two is where most reputable research services sit, and it is useful if you plan to run stages four through six yourself. Just price your own time and risk into the comparison. Our [Amazon FBA product research](https://flapen.com/amazon-fba-product-research) service is built as tier three, and you should hold us to that definition on a call. ## What most research services will not tell you Where their accountability ends. A tier-two provider is judged on the persuasiveness of a document, and a persuasive document about a mediocre product reads exactly like a persuasive document about a good one. The difference only surfaces at stage five, when real buyers meet real inventory. Ask every candidate one question: what happens if the validation run misses its numbers? A provider with no answer has never had to watch one miss. ## Related answers - [Best Amazon product research service for beginners](https://flapen.com/blog/best-amazon-product-research-service-for-beginners) - [Compare done-for-you Amazon research providers](https://flapen.com/blog/compare-done-for-you-amazon-research-providers) - [Amazon product research service under $200](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-product-research-service-under-200) - [Keyword-driven product research for Amazon sellers](https://flapen.com/blog/keyword-driven-product-research-for-amazon-sellers) - [Amazon sourcing and product research services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/sourcing-and-research-services) If you want the six stages run on your budget and category, start with the free audit at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Source the product](https://flapen.com/guides/product-sourcing) - [Calculate the tariff on a shipment](https://flapen.com/tools/tariff-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**What does full launch research actually include? How much should I budget for the validation stage? Are cheap research packages worth anything? How long does the full process take? What is a reasonable market size floor? What should happen when the validation run misses its numbers? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
