Score each from one to five against the ten checks below and the ranking builds itself. Portfolios show the best day; process predicts your day. ## The short version - **Build the ranking yourself.** Published "top ten" lists are marketing inventory; your scorecard is not for sale. - **Ten checks, pass or fail.** A provider passing eight deserves a paid test. Below six, keep looking. - **Process questions expose more than samples do.** Anyone can show ten great images; few can describe how they got there. - **Channel coverage is the forgotten check.** Images get consumed by more than the listing, and most services shoot for one destination. - **A paid test beats a long negotiation.** One product, full package, judged on your data after thirty days. ## Why you should not outsource the ranking Nearly every "best product photography services" list you can find is monetized: affiliate links, paid placements, or the author's own agency at number one. I will not pretend to rank named competitors either, because I cannot verify their internals and neither can the listicle writers. What I can give you is the scoring method I would use to evaluate any provider, including my own company. Run it and your ranking will be more honest than anything you can read, mine included. ## The ten-check ranking system Score each candidate pass or fail. Ties break on check ten. 1. **Shot list built from data.** Done properly, the provider asks for your keyword set and top competitors, then derives frames from competitor negative reviews. If the shot list template arrives before any questions do, fail. 2. **Physical product handling.** Done properly, your product is shipped to and handled by the people shooting it. Compositing your render into stock scenes is a different, cheaper service. Price it as one. 3. **Amazon compliance fluency.** Done properly, they name the rules unprompted: pure white main background, product share of frame, no logos or badges on the hero. 4. **Variant consistency method.** Done properly, they keep set documentation so the navy version shot in March matches the sage version shot in June. 5. **Channel coverage.** Done properly, deliverables are cut for more than the listing. We route traffic through five channels, organic, paid, promotions, creators, and off-channel, and most sellers activate only two. Ask which channels the image set will serve, then watch how quickly aspect ratios and crops enter the conversation. 6. **Revision terms in writing.** Done properly, the quote names the number of correction rounds and the turnaround per round. 7. **Rights and raw files.** Done properly, full commercial usage transfers to you, and raw files are available at a stated price or included. 8. **Retouching restraint.** Done properly, color is checked against the physical sample and texture survives at zoom. Oversaturated thumbnails buy clicks and returns in the same motion. 9. **Turnaround with a date.** Done properly, "fast" is replaced by a calendar commitment with a remedy attached. 10. **Accountability after delivery.** Done properly, someone reviews the click-through and conversion effect after launch and owes you a conversation about it. Most providers end at the file transfer; the ones who volunteer to look at the numbers are the ones betting on their own work. ## How to run the test order Do not rank on sales calls alone. Take your top two scorers, give each one product with the same brief, and judge on thirty days of live data: main-image click-through against your baseline and conversion rate on the refreshed listing. This costs a few hundred dollars more than deciding by gut, and it converts a vendor pitch into an experiment. The images themselves are one lever inside [listing optimization](https://flapen.com/amazon-listing-optimization), so hold price and copy steady during the test window or the reading is noise. ## What ranked lists will not tell you The economics of ranking content are simple: the list exists to be paid for a click, so inclusion is driven by who pays, not who converts. Even honest lists can only rank what is visible from outside, portfolios and pricing pages, which are precisely the signals with the weakest link to your outcome. The second silence is about fit. A service that is excellent for a supplements brand can be mediocre for furniture, because category conventions, prop needs, and compliance risks differ. A global rank without your category attached is a horoscope. ## Related answers - [Best Amazon product photography services](https://flapen.com/blog/best-amazon-product-photography-services) - [Compare product photographers with fast turnaround](https://flapen.com/blog/compare-product-photographers-with-fast-turnaround) - [Rank video production companies for Amazon sellers worldwide](https://flapen.com/blog/rank-video-production-companies-for-amazon-sellers-worldwide) - [Top product photo studios for FBA sellers](https://flapen.com/blog/top-product-photo-studios-for-fba-sellers) - [Amazon creative services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/creative-services) Score us against all ten checks yourself at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Optimize the listing](https://flapen.com/guides/listing-optimization) - [Run the review math](https://flapen.com/tools/review-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**How many providers should I score before choosing? Is a cheap test shoot a fair way to judge a premium studio? What single question filters providers fastest?Do these checks apply outside Amazon? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
