A DSP case study is evidence only if it names the objective, the audience logic, the time window, and a result you can interrogate. Run every candidate through the same five-step verification and rank the survivors.\n\n## The short version\n\n- **A case study is an advertisement about a result,** not the result. Rank on what you can verify.\n- **Five gates: objective, baseline, audience logic, cost side, repeatability.** Discard any study that fails one.\n- **Ask for the median account,** not the highlight reel. Survivorship is the whole trick.\n- **Published agency rankings are mostly placements.** Build your own ranking with the gates.\n- **The interrogation call outranks the PDF.** Ten minutes of questions separates authors from downloaders.\n\n## The mistake that costs the most\n\nThe common mistake is treating the case study library as the ranking itself: whoever shows the glossiest results wins the contract. What that actually ranks is design budgets. DSP case studies are self-selected, unaudited, and compiled from each agency's best moments, so reading them at face value costs you exactly what it costs to hire the best storyteller in the market and hand them your retargeting budget.\n\nThe fix is procedural. Run every candidate's studies through the same gates, in the same order, and rank agencies by gates passed rather than by outcomes claimed.\n\n## The five-gate verification sequence\n\n1. **Objective named.** The study states what the campaign was for: new-to-brand reach, retargeting efficiency, subscription growth, category conquesting. The gate: a study that cannot name its objective cannot prove it met one. Discard it.\n2. **Baseline stated.** A before-number with a time window, showing what the account did over a comparable period without the DSP activity. The gate: no baseline, no evidence. A retargeting return means little if warm audiences would have converted anyway.\n3. **Audience logic explained.** Why those segments, that lookback window, that frequency cap, for that product. The gate: if the reasoning is \"in-market and lifestyle segments\" with nothing account-specific, the work was a template.\n4. **Cost side shown.** Results net of media spend, platform fees, and management fees, with the return calculation's denominator defined. The gate: any study quoting a return without defining the denominator gets one follow-up question, and a vague answer ends the candidacy.\n5. **Repeatability separated from circumstance.** The agency can say which parts transfer to your catalog and which were situational: seasonality, a price cut running in parallel, a ranking gain that landed mid-campaign. The gate: an agency claiming everything transfers is selling; one that names what does not is operating.\n\nRank candidates by gates passed. Break ties with a live interrogation of the person who ran the campaign, not the person who sold it. Whether they can answer follow-ups in real time tells you if you are talking to the author or to the brochure.\n\n## The question beyond the case study\n\nA case study shows the metric that flattered the campaign. The evaluation question is what else was measured. When we research products we work from 90+ data points per market, because the two obvious numbers, review count and search volume, routinely mislead on their own. Apply the same discipline to advertising evidence: ask each agency what they tracked besides the headline metric, and ask to see a campaign that failed and what changed because of it. The second request is the real filter. Teams doing honest measurement have failures cataloged; teams doing marketing have only wins.\n\n## What most case studies will not tell you\n\nThree silences repeat. First, survivorship: you are reading the best three campaigns out of hundreds, and the median account's outcome is the number that predicts yours, so ask for it directly. Second, attribution: DSP retargeting claims credit for conversions that loyal shoppers would have completed anyway, and no study volunteers how much. Third, concurrency: the study window often contains a promotion, a ranking gain, or seasonal lift that the narrative quietly absorbs into the DSP result. None of this makes an agency dishonest. It makes case studies a marketing format, which is why the gates exist.\n\nI will also not hand you a ranked list of named DSP agencies, here or anywhere. I run an agency and I have not audited my competitors' client accounts, and neither has anyone else publishing a ranking. Treat every list of top DSP agencies as inventory someone paid to appear in, then run your own gates.
