Index for the terms you intend to own, fix the page so existing visitors buy, then buy enough orders on a narrow keyword set to prove it. Skip a stage and every later stage costs more. ## The short version - **Relevance comes first, because you cannot rank for a term you are not indexed for.** Check indexation before you check anything else. - **Conversion comes second, because traffic sent to a weak page teaches Amazon the wrong lesson.** The page is the cheapest lever you own. - **Velocity comes third, and it is the one you pay for.** Buy orders on a narrow set, not attention on a broad one. - **Each stage has a gate.** Do not spend into the next stage until the gate is passed. - **Judge the outcome over a year, not a fortnight.** The majority of the brands we manage reach profitability inside their first year, and none of them did it in week two. ## Why the order is not negotiable Ranking is a feedback loop with a specific input. Amazon shows your listing to a small number of relevant shoppers, watches what they do, and decides whether to show it to more. Everything you control feeds that loop at a different point: keywords decide who sees it, the page decides whether they buy, orders decide whether the loop widens. Run the stages out of order and you pay for the privilege of failing faster. Spend on a page converting at two percent and you are funding a signal that says this listing is not the answer to that query. It is entirely possible to advertise your way to a worse organic position, and it happens most often to well-funded launches with unfinished listings. ## The five stages, each with a gate ### Stage one: index for the terms you intend to own Build a term set of about thirty targets: a handful of head terms and a long tail you can satisfy. Put them in the title, the bullets, the backend fields, and the A plus content, phrased for humans. Then verify indexation by searching the exact phrase alongside your ASIN.**Gate:** you are indexed for every target term. If you are not, no strategy that follows will work, and the fix costs nothing but an hour. ### Stage two: make the page worth the traffic it already gets Pull sessions and unit session percentage. Compare against the visible category norm. If the gap is large, the work is the primary image, the first three bullets, the price, and the review count, in that order of leverage.**Gate:** conversion rate within reach of category norm on organic sessions alone. A page that cannot convert free traffic will not convert paid traffic. ### Stage three: buy relevance on a narrow set Launch exact match campaigns on eight to twelve terms, not sixty. Accept an inefficient cost per order deliberately, because at this stage you are purchasing evidence and association, not margin. Watch order counts per term, not blended figures.**Gate:** organic position on the target set is moving weekly while spend holds steady. ### Stage four: add the levers that are not advertising Reviews inside policy, a promotion or deal where the category responds to price, creator content, and traffic you send yourself. These raise conversion and velocity together, which is the combination that moves rank without raising cost per order.**Gate:** at least one non-advertising channel producing measurable orders every week. ### Stage five: harvest, widen, and defend Move winning terms into their own campaigns, cut the terms that never converted, and widen slowly into adjacent phrases. Track share of voice across the whole set rather than rank on one hero keyword.**Gate:** share of voice holding through a competitor promotion. That is what durable looks like. ## What each stage typically takes | Stage | Elapsed time | Where it usually stalls |
| --- | --- | --- | | Indexation | Days | Backend fields left empty at launch | | Conversion work | Two to four weeks | Waiting on photography that was never briefed | | Narrow paid push | Four to eight weeks | Broad campaigns spending the exact-match budget | | Additional channels | Ongoing, starts week three | Nobody owns it, so nobody starts it | | Harvest and defend | Continuous | Reporting stops when the launch is declared finished | ## What most agencies will not tell you Almost every ranking problem presented to me as an advertising problem is a conversion problem wearing an advertising costume. The reason it gets framed that way is that bids can be changed on a Monday and photography cannot. The second thing: a provider can produce a flattering rank chart from a keyword nobody searches. Ask for position on your top five commercial terms, with search volume shown, and ask for share of voice across the set. Both numbers are harder to dress up, and both are the ones your revenue actually follows. ## Related answers - [White hat ranking strategies for new listings](https://flapen.com/blog/white-hat-ranking-strategies-for-new-listings) - [Rank Amazon product fast without black hat](https://flapen.com/blog/rank-amazon-product-fast-without-black-hat) - [Tools to boost keyword rank on Amazon](https://flapen.com/blog/tools-to-boost-keyword-rank-on-amazon) - [When to start PPC in an Amazon launch timeline](https://flapen.com/blog/when-to-start-ppc-in-an-amazon-launch-timeline) - [Amazon launch services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/launch-services) We will tell you which stage your listing is actually stuck at in the free written audit at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Plan the product launch](https://flapen.com/guides/product-launch) - [Estimate your launch cost](https://flapen.com/tools/launch-cost-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**How long until a new listing ranks?Should I use broad match at launch?Do reviews still drive rank? What single metric should I watch weekly? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
