Score photographers against those rules before price, because a suppressed image costs more than any shoot. ## The short version - **The main image carries almost all the compliance risk.** Secondary images allow lifestyle scenes, text overlays, and infographics. - **Pure white is measured, not eyeballed.** An off-white backdrop that looks fine on a laptop fails Amazon's check and can suppress the listing. - **1,600 pixels is the zoom threshold,** and zoom is a conversion feature you forfeit with smaller files. - **Category rules add layers,** apparel has posing and mannequin restrictions, and some categories restrict packaging in frame. - **A vendor who asks for your category before quoting** has done this before. One who sends a generic portfolio has not. ## The scorecard for hiring a compliant photographer Weight the criteria by what a failure costs. Score each vendor 1 to 5, multiply, and the ranking makes itself. | Criterion | Weight | What a 5 looks like |
| --- | --- | --- | | Knows main-image rules cold | 30% | Recites white-background, frame-fill, and no-text rules unprompted, asks your category | | Technical file discipline | 20% | Delivers over 1,600px, sRGB, correct formats, named to your convention | | Rejection and rework terms | 20% | Reshoots free if an image is rejected or suppressed for compliance | | Full-gallery thinking | 15% | Proposes the six to nine image slots as a set: hero, scale, features, lifestyle, comparison | | Turnaround and logistics | 15% | Clear sample-handling process, stated days to delivery, keeps files for reorders | The third row is the one buyers skip and regret. Compliance failures surface after delivery, sometimes weeks after, when Amazon's checks or a category audit catch the image. A vendor unwilling to own that outcome in writing is quoting for pixels, not for a working listing. ## The stop conditions: when a shoot should not proceed The sharpest question I know for any service provider is what would make them tell you to stop. We run explicit kill criteria on products, defined thresholds on rating trend, return rate, conversion, and acquisition cost that trigger a stop decision, and the same discipline applies in miniature to photography. A good photo partner halts the shoot and tells you when: 1. **The sample itself fails.** Scratches, seams, warped packaging. Retouching a defective sample into beauty produces returns, because the shopper receives the truth. 2. **The product cannot fill 85% of a white frame honestly.** Transparent, reflective, or very thin products need specific technique, and a vendor without it should decline rather than deliver gray-cast heroes. 3. **Your differentiation is invisible.** If the reason shoppers should pick you cannot be photographed, the problem sits upstream in product definition, not in lighting. That is a research conversation, the kind a proper [product research](https://flapen.com/amazon-fba-product-research) pass settles before a camera is booked. 4. **The brief asks for rule-breaking.** Badges, "number one" claims, or text on the hero. A vendor who executes a non-compliant brief without warning you is dangerous precisely because the images will look great. Vendors who can name their stop conditions are rare, and they are the ones to hire. The ones who never stop anything deliver beautiful liabilities. ## The rules that actually get sellers caught Amazon's photo requirements run long, but suppression and rejection cluster around a short list. The main image must be a photograph of the actual product, on pure white, no illustrations, no bundles that misrepresent the offer, no accessories in frame that are not included, no watermarks, no borders. The product fills most of the frame without cropping edges. Secondary slots are where creativity legally lives: lifestyle context, dimension callouts, infographic overlays, comparison charts. Apparel adds its own layer, model or flat-lay conventions per subcategory and no folded garments on heroes. Sellers in Europe should also expect stricter enforcement waves per marketplace, and a gallery reused across all 23 marketplaces needs its text overlays localized, which is why we produce listing content in English, German, Spanish, and French. ## What photo studios will not tell you Most will not tell you that compliance is checkable before upload, because rework revenue depends on it staying mysterious. Background purity can be verified with a color picker, frame fill with a ruler, resolution in file properties. Thirty seconds per image, and you can run the audit yourself on delivery day. The second silence is about where compliant images come from. The white-background hero is a technical commodity any competent studio produces. The images that move conversion, the ones translating your differentiators into three seconds of understanding, require knowing what shoppers in your niche complain about and choose on. Studios sell the commodity at craft prices and stay quiet about the strategy layer, because the strategy layer is not in their building. ## Related answers - [Photo requirements for Amazon marketplace](https://flapen.com/blog/photo-requirements-for-amazon-marketplace) - [White background photos vs lifestyle for Amazon](https://flapen.com/blog/white-background-photos-vs-lifestyle-for-amazon) - [UGC vs professional photos for Amazon listings](https://flapen.com/blog/ugc-vs-professional-photos-for-amazon-listings) - [High conversion Amazon hero images](https://flapen.com/blog/high-conversion-amazon-hero-images) - [Amazon sourcing and product research services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/sourcing-and-research-services) If you would rather the compliance audit, the strategy layer, and the camera sit in one accountable team, that is the setup at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Source the product](https://flapen.com/guides/product-sourcing) - [Calculate the tariff on a shipment](https://flapen.com/tools/tariff-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**What resolution do Amazon product photos need? Can I put text or badges on my main image?Do lifestyle images have to follow the white-background rule? How many images should a listing carry?Who is responsible if a delivered image gets the listing suppressed? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
