![Flapen cover for Preferred vendors for Amazon store design: a brand portfolio review over a three-size lineup](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fblog%2Fclusters%2Fbrand-tiers-09.jpg&w=1536&q=100) There are three vendor types for Amazon store design: freelance designers, specialist creative studios, and full-management agencies with in-house creative teams. Choose by what happens after delivery. A store is a conversion asset that needs traffic data, testing, and updates, so favor vendors who will still be accountable for it in month six. ## The short version - **A storefront is a conversion system, not a brochure.** It gets judged on sales per visitor, nothing else. - **The vendor types differ mainly after launch.** Anyone can deliver pretty tiles on day one. - **Design without your traffic data is decoration.** The layout should be driven by what buyers actually search and click. - **Brand Registry is the entry ticket.** No registry, no store, so sequence your trademark first. - **Ask every candidate for a before-and-after conversion number.** Portfolios show taste. Numbers show competence. ## Your actual situation You have a storefront to build or rebuild, a launch date in mind, and a shortlist that probably mixes a freelancer from a marketplace platform, a boutique creative studio, and one or two agencies. They will all show you attractive portfolios, which is precisely why portfolios cannot be the deciding criterion. The useful comparison is what each vendor type structurally can and cannot do for a store once it is live and real shopper data starts disagreeing with the design. ## The three vendor types compared | Criterion | Freelance designer | Specialist creative studio | Full-management agency, in-house creative |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | | Cost shape | Lowest, per project | Mid to high, per project | Inside the retainer | | Visual quality ceiling | Varies enormously | Typically high | High when the studio is internal | | Amazon-specific knowledge | Often thin | Good on formats, thinner on strategy | Strongest, sees rank and conversion data daily | | Access to your traffic data | None | Rarely | Full, it runs the account | | Iteration after launch | New invoice each time | Retainer or new scope | Continuous, part of the job | | Accountability for conversion | None | Ends at delivery | Carries it, month after month | ## The decision rule Buy on the after, not the before. If the store is a one-off asset for a brand you manage well yourself, a strong freelancer or studio is efficient, provided you feed them real keyword and conversion data and budget for revisions when the data argues back. If the store needs to keep earning, being tested, restructured for seasonal pushes, and updated as the catalog moves, the vendor should be whoever already operates your account, because they are the only party holding the feedback loop. A design fee saved up front is spent three times over on a beautiful store nobody iterates. For context on how we sit in that table: Flapen's creative is produced by its own studio in Dubai, product content comes out of an in-house photography operation in Guangzhou, and the frameworks behind both were built across more than 500 brands. Store work is not a project we sell, it is a lane inside management, which is exactly the bias you should factor in while reading this page. ## What a store has to earn A storefront pays rent three ways: it converts brand-search traffic that would otherwise land on a crowded search page next to competitors, it cross-sells the catalog a single listing cannot show, and it gives external traffic from creators and off-Amazon channels a landing place you control end to end. Every one of those jobs is measurable. If a design proposal never mentions store traffic sources, dwell paths, or sales per visitor, you are commissioning wall art. ## What most agencies will not tell you Store design has almost no defensible moat, which is why everyone offers it. The template system is constrained, the modules are the same for every seller, and the honest differentiation is not layout originality, it is whether the vendor knows which products deserve the top row and which search terms the store should be built around. That knowledge comes from your data, not their portfolio. The second admission: a store rebuild is frequently not the highest-return creative work available. Main image testing on your top listings usually moves total revenue more than a storefront refresh, and a vendor who sells you the store without checking that first is selling what they have, not what you need. ## Related answers - [Best agency for Amazon store design and A+ content](https://flapen.com/blog/best-agency-for-amazon-store-design-and-a-content) - [Rank top Amazon agencies for creatives and A+ content](https://flapen.com/blog/rank-top-amazon-agencies-for-creatives-and-a-content) - [Top agencies for Amazon image and video creatives](https://flapen.com/blog/top-agencies-for-amazon-image-and-video-creatives) - [Which agency is best for Amazon listing optimization](https://flapen.com/blog/which-agency-is-best-for-amazon-listing-optimization) - [Amazon brand management tiers: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/brand-tiers) If you want the store judged on sales per visitor rather than screenshots, that conversation starts at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Compare Amazon business models](https://flapen.com/guides/business-models) - [Value your Amazon business](https://flapen.com/tools/business-value-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**What do I need before a store can be built at all?How much does Amazon store design cost? How often should a storefront be updated? How do I measure whether my store is working?Should product photography and store design come from the same vendor? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
