Secondary slots are where you sell. Compliance gets you listed. It does not get you clicked. ## The short version - **Main image:** pure white background, the product only, no props that are not in the box, no text, no logos, no watermarks. - **Size:** 1000 pixels minimum on the longest side. Shoot at 1600 or more so zoom works on mobile. - **Frame fill:** the product should occupy about 85 percent of the image. - **Format:** JPEG is the safe default, in sRGB. - **The trap:** these rules get you listed. They say nothing about getting the click, which is a different standard entirely. ## The floor and the standard are two different documents Two numbers decide whether your photos are even eligible: 1000 pixels and 85 percent. Everything else in Amazon's image policy exists to keep the search grid clean and the zoom feature working. Eligibility is a low bar. The sellers who treat the requirement sheet as a creative brief end up with a compliant gallery that loses the click to a competitor who treated it as the floor. Hold the two standards side by side and the difference is obvious. | Element | Amazon's floor | The standard that wins the click |
| --- | --- | --- | | Main image | White background, product only, no text | Product angled to show its defining feature, filling the frame edge to edge | | Resolution | 1000px on the longest side | 1600px or more, so a shopper can inspect stitching, ports, or texture | | Secondary slots | Few technical rules | Each slot answers one buying question: size, material, use, compatibility | | Text overlays | Banned on the main image | Used deliberately on secondaries for dimensions and claims | | Lifestyle frames | Permitted after the main image | Setting and cast matched to the actual buyer, not a stock scene | The left column keeps your listing from being suppressed. The right column is where revenue comes from, and no policy page will ever describe it. ## Slot by slot, what each image must do 1. **Main image.** Compliance plus differentiation. If your product looks identical to the category at thumbnail size, the gallery behind it never gets seen. 2. **Second slot.** The strongest feature, the one competitors get criticized for lacking. 3. **Third slot.** Scale. In a hand, on a desk, next to something familiar. Size confusion is a leading driver of returns. 4. **Fourth slot.** The infographic. Dimensions, materials, what is in the box. 5. **Fifth slot.** Lifestyle, shot for the person who actually buys. 6. **Sixth slot.** The objection killer. Whatever the negative reviews of rivals complain about, show yours solving it. 7. **Remaining slots.** Use them. Empty slots are free real estate handed back to Amazon. Which feature earns the second slot is not a creative decision. It comes out of research. When we run [Amazon product research](https://flapen.com/amazon-fba-product-research) before a launch, competitor negative reviews and the rating gap tell us exactly which claim deserves the most visible position, before anyone opens a camera bag. ## What photo requirement checklists will not tell you The requirements are permanent but the standard is not, and almost nobody audits images after upload. A gallery that won the click in January can be beaten by a competitor's reshoot in June while your account manager never looks at it again. That is a bandwidth problem, not a talent problem. Whoever manages your listing needs room to re-check primary image click-through rate, and most agency staff carry ten or more accounts, which leaves no room at all. At Flapen we hold the load to about 1.4 brands per operator precisely so that post-launch iteration happens. Primary image CTR is one of the seven areas in every audit we run. Whoever you hire, ask one question: how many brands does the person touching my images carry? The answer predicts whether your gallery gets revisited or fossilizes. ## Related answers - [High conversion Amazon hero images](https://flapen.com/blog/high-conversion-amazon-hero-images) - [White background photos vs lifestyle for Amazon](https://flapen.com/blog/white-background-photos-vs-lifestyle-for-amazon) - [Product photography with compliance to Amazon guidelines](https://flapen.com/blog/product-photography-with-compliance-to-amazon-guidelines) - [Studio or on-location photos for Amazon](https://flapen.com/blog/studio-or-on-location-photos-for-amazon) - [Amazon sourcing and product research services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/sourcing-and-research-services) If you want a gallery built to the second column rather than the first, talk to [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Source the product](https://flapen.com/guides/product-sourcing) - [Calculate the tariff on a shipment](https://flapen.com/tools/tariff-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**What resolution do Amazon product photos need? Can the main image contain text, badges, or a logo?Do lifestyle photos have to be on a white background? What gets a listing suppressed for image reasons? How often should listing images be refreshed?Which feature earns the second slot in the gallery? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
