Track three numbers: conversion rate against the category, rating trajectory, and cost of customer acquisition trend. Revenue can be bought at a loss for months. A launch is succeeding only when those three prove the product deserves more capital. ## The short version - **Revenue is an output you can rent.** Promotions and heavy ads buy top-line for as long as you fund them. - **Conversion rate against the category** proves the offer works when a shopper actually sees it. - **Rating trajectory** proves the product survives contact with customers. - **CAC trend** proves the economics improve with scale instead of degrading. - **The north star question is always the same:** does this product deserve the next tranche of capital. ## What I learned reading launch decks from the buyer side Before starting Flapen I ran data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the large Amazon aggregators, and part of that job was looking at seller performance the way an acquirer does. The decks always led with revenue curves. The diligence always ignored them and went straight to the underlying questions: what does an order cost, what do customers say after thirty days, and does the listing convert without discounts. Sellers who managed their launch to a revenue number routinely failed that screen. Sellers who managed to proof metrics passed it, sometimes at surprisingly small revenue. That buyer's lens is the correct launch lens. A launch is not a sales event. It is an experiment that either earns the right to more inventory and ad budget or does not. ## The launch arithmetic Money makes the stakes concrete. Typical capital requirements look like this: | Line | Typical range |
| --- | --- | | Single product launch, all-in | $8,000 to $15,000 | | Five-product brand launch, all-in | $25,000 to $50,000 | | Time to a full brand launch | Around 7 months | With that much committed, the role of a north star metric is capital allocation. Each proof metric is a gate on the next spend. Chasing a revenue milestone instead means the burn continues whether or not the product is working, which is exactly how launch budgets disappear. ## The three numbers, and what each must show 1. **Conversion rate against the category.** Not against a global average, against comparable listings at a comparable price. If shoppers who land on the page do not buy, the problem is the offer or the page, and the fix is [listing optimization](https://flapen.com/amazon-listing-optimization) before another ad dollar. Conversion is the first gate because weak conversion corrupts every downstream number. 2. **Rating trajectory.** Early reviews are a verdict on the physical product. A listing holding a strong rating as volume grows has product-market fit. A rating drifting down as strangers replace early adopters is the single most expensive signal to ignore, because everything built on top of it will need rebuilding. 3. **Cost of customer acquisition trend.** The absolute CAC at week two is almost meaningless. The trend across the launch window is everything. CAC should fall as rank builds, reviews accumulate, and targeting sharpens. A flat or rising CAC with rising spend means you are buying the same customers at auction over and over. Revenue still gets recorded. It just never gets to overrule the three gates. ## What launch decks will not tell you A launch spike is manufacturable. Aggressive coupons, giveaway-level pricing, and max-budget ads will produce a hockey stick on demand, and a services provider paid to show momentum can always hand you one. What cannot be manufactured is a conversion rate that holds at full price, a rating that holds at volume, and a CAC that falls month over month. When someone reports a launch to you, the tell is which numbers lead. Revenue first with proof metrics missing is a deck. Proof metrics first with revenue as context is a report. The other silence: nobody presenting a launch wants to define failure in advance. Insist on it. Agree before spending what the three metrics must show by a set date, and what happens if they do not. ## Related answers - [What KPIs to track for Amazon FBA growth](https://flapen.com/blog/what-kpis-to-track-for-amazon-fba-growth) - [Amazon SEO audit services for new product launches](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-seo-audit-services-for-new-product-launches) - [Amazon advertising KPIs that matter](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-advertising-kpis-that-matter) - [Monthly vs weekly cadence for Amazon reporting](https://flapen.com/blog/monthly-vs-weekly-cadence-for-amazon-reporting) - [Amazon creative services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/creative-services) If you want a launch managed to proof metrics with failure defined in advance, that conversation starts at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Optimize the listing](https://flapen.com/guides/listing-optimization) - [Run the review math](https://flapen.com/tools/review-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**Why not use revenue as the north star? What conversion rate should a new listing hit?How long should a launch run before judging it?Is best seller rank a useful launch metric? When does revenue become the metric that matters? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
