Build the page to convert first, then drive traffic from more than one source, and score your readiness against the six factors below before you spend anything on advertising. ## The short version - **Rank is earned, not bought.** Advertising buys visits. Conversions on those visits are what move the organic position. - **Relevance comes first.** A keyword you have not made the listing about will not rank no matter what you spend. - **Traffic multiplies whatever the page already does.** It magnifies a good listing and a bad one with equal enthusiasm. - **One source of traffic is fragile.** Sellers who only run paid search have one lever and one failure point. - **Score before you spend.** Anything under a pass mark you set in advance means fix the listing, not raise the budget. ## The mechanism, in plain terms Amazon has to decide which of several thousand listings to show for a phrase. It solves that by asking two questions: is this listing about the phrase, and do shoppers who see it buy it. Everything that works in ranking is a way of answering one of those two questions better. Relevance is the part you control directly through the title, bullets, backend terms, and the actual attributes of the product. Velocity is the part you earn, and it is measured in conversions rather than clicks. This is why a large advertising budget on a weak page produces an expensive lesson: you are proving to the algorithm, at high resolution and your own cost, that shoppers who see this listing do not buy it. That mechanism also explains the sequencing. Fix relevance, then fix the conversion elements, then buy traffic, then widen the traffic. Reverse any two of those steps and you pay more for less. ## Score your listing before you buy a single click Set the weights and your pass mark before you look at your own page, because scoring after you have seen the result is how everyone talks themselves into launching early. | Factor | Weight | What a five looks like |
| --- | --- | --- | | Keyword relevance | 25 | Title and bullets built around the phrases you intend to rank for, with backend terms covering variants and misspellings | | Primary image click through | 20 | A hero image that reads at thumbnail size and beats the rest of the search row | | Listing conversion elements | 20 | Benefit led bullets, A plus content, video, sized and styled for a phone screen | | Review foundation | 15 | A credible starting base gathered through compliant routes, not a blank page | | Price position | 10 | Priced into a segment on purpose, with the reason written down | | Inventory depth | 10 | Enough stock to survive the ranking window without going out of stock | Total it honestly. Under your pass mark, the correct action is another week of listing work, not a bigger campaign. Inventory sits on the scorecard for a reason: running out during the window you are trying to rank in undoes the money you just spent, and it is the most avoidable failure on the list. ## Traffic: use more than two of the five There are five ways to bring shoppers to a listing. Organic search, paid advertising, promotions and deals, influencer and creator content, and off channel traffic from outside Amazon. Most sellers run two of them, usually organic and paid, and then wonder why their launch stalls when the paid auction gets expensive. The reason to run more is not variety for its own sake. Each channel produces a different kind of signal and a different cost curve. Promotions produce velocity quickly and cheaply but tell you little about real demand. Creator content produces sessions that convert unusually well and reviews that read like people rather than customers. Off channel traffic is slower to build and the least correlated with what your competitors are doing, which makes it the most durable of the five. The practical test for anyone running your account is simple. Ask which of the five they operate and ask for evidence from the last ninety days. At Flapen we run all five, with creative produced in our own Dubai studio, and I would apply exactly the same question to us. Two channels is a media buyer. Five is a launch team. ## The first thirty days, in order 1. **Finish relevance work before launch day.** Title, bullets, attributes, backend terms. Changing these mid launch resets what the algorithm has learned. 2. **Get the hero image right.** It decides your click through rate in the search row, and click through rate decides what everything else costs. 3. **Start with a narrow, exact keyword set.** Winning a small number of specific phrases beats appearing weakly across hundreds. 4. **Build the review foundation through compliant routes.** A page with no social proof converts poorly no matter how good the copy is. 5. **Add a second and third traffic source in week two.** Promotions and creator content, before the paid auction becomes your only lever. 6. **Widen keywords only after the narrow set converts.** Expansion on a proven page compounds. Expansion on an unproven one just costs more. ## What most agencies will not tell you Ranking services are easy to sell because the deliverable looks like activity. Campaigns launched, keywords added, bids adjusted, a report full of movement. None of that is the same as position on the phrases that actually produce sales, and the gap between the two is where a lot of retainers quietly live. The harder thing to say to a client is that their listing is not ready and the money should not be spent yet. That conversation costs the agency a month of visible work, so it happens far less often than it should. If you want a straight answer, ask a prospective partner what they would do in week one if they judged the listing not ready. The answer tells you whether they sell traffic or results. ## Related answers - [Optimize Amazon listings for Q4](https://flapen.com/blog/optimize-amazon-listings-for-q4) - [How to get first 100 sales on Amazon quickly](https://flapen.com/blog/how-to-get-first-100-sales-on-amazon-quickly) - [Typical Amazon PPC budget for new listings](https://flapen.com/blog/typical-amazon-ppc-budget-for-new-listings) - [Review generation playbook that complies with policy](https://flapen.com/blog/review-generation-playbook-that-complies-with-policy) - [Amazon seller roadmaps and capital: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/roadmaps-and-capital) If you want your listing scored against this before the first campaign goes live, ask for the free audit at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Set up your Amazon seller account](https://flapen.com/guides/account-setup) - [Estimate your launch cost](https://flapen.com/tools/launch-cost-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**How long does it take a new listing to rank?Should I run advertising on day one?Do I need reviews before I launch? Is it better to target broad or exact keywords first? What breaks a ranking run most often? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
