In year one: nail relevance in the listing copy, win clicks with the primary image, convert at a defensible price, then feed the listing steady orders through paid and outside traffic until organic position carries the volume on its own. ## The short version - **Amazon ranks what sells through a search term.** Not what is optimized, what converts. - **Indexing comes first.** A keyword missing from your listing is a race you never entered. - **The primary image is the rank lever nobody budgets for.** Click-through decides how much each impression is worth. - **Velocity must be steady, not spiky.** A one-week surge decays; twelve weeks of consistent orders compounds. - **Diagnose before you spend.** Each ranking symptom has a different cause and a different owner. ## The mechanism, in one paragraph Amazon's search results exist to maximize the probability a shopper buys. So the algorithm continuously answers one question per keyword: which products, shown here, produce purchases. A new listing has no history, which is why it starts invisible, and why everything in year one is really one project, manufacturing believable evidence that your product converts for the terms you want. Copy makes you eligible. Clicks make you considered. Conversions make you ranked. Repeat conversions keep you there. ## The diagnostic table for a listing that is not ranking Work symptom by symptom. Most stuck listings have exactly one primary blockage, and treating the wrong one burns months. | Symptom | Likely cause | The fix, and who owns it |
| --- | --- | --- | | Not appearing at all for a term | Not indexed, term missing from copy | Rewrite title, bullets, backend terms. Owner: whoever writes your listings | | Impressions, weak clicks | Primary image loses the side-by-side | Reshoot and test the main image. Owner: creative | | Clicks, weak conversion | Price, reviews, or gallery gap | Fix the weakest of the three before buying traffic. Owner: brand manager | | Converts, rank still slipping | Velocity spread across too many terms | Concentrate ads on a short list. Owner: PPC | | Ranks, then fades in month two | Demand spike ended, nothing replaced it | Build steady traffic sources. Owner: strategy | That last row is where most first-year listings die, so it deserves the detail. There are **five traffic channels** available to any Amazon brand: organic, paid, promotions, influencer and creator, and off-channel. Most sellers run two, organic and paid, and then wonder why rank wobbles every time they touch an ad budget. The listings that hold rank through year one are fed from at least three, because the algorithm reads diversified, recurring demand as a product the market wants. When you evaluate any agency, ask which of the five they will actually operate for you. The answer is usually shorter than the pitch. ## The year-one sequence 1. **Months 1 to 2:** listing complete before launch. Keyword-mapped copy, full gallery, A+ content, reviews arriving through Vine. Launching a bare listing and fixing it live wastes your honeymoon period, the early window when Amazon gives new products a visibility benefit. 2. **Months 2 to 4:** concentrated paid traffic on 5 to 15 exact-match terms you intend to own. Watch keyword-level conversion weekly and cut what does not convert. 3. **Months 4 to 8:** widen. Add the adjacent keyword tier, activate a creator channel, run small promotions timed to shopping events. Protect price stability while you do it. 4. **Months 8 to 12:** defend and compound. Rank earned is rank attacked, competitors will target your terms directly. Keep review flow healthy, keep stock deep, and reinvest into the channels that proved themselves. Stockouts deserve their own sentence: going out of stock in month six hands back most of what you built, and the algorithm does not accept apologies. Inventory planning is ranking strategy. ## What most agencies will not tell you Ranking timelines are quoted in weeks because that is what sells. Real page-one positions on commercially valuable terms take months of consistent conversion, and any faster promise relies on tactics that decay or violate policy. The one honest shortcut is picking terms where the fight is winnable, a specific niche phrase you can own in month three beats a head term you will never hold. The second thing: agencies love to show rank-tracker screenshots for long-tail terms nobody searches. Hold reporting to terms with real volume and to one number those screenshots cannot fake, organic orders per week. That is the metric the whole exercise exists to move. This is the standard we accept for our own work inside a [managed launch](https://flapen.com/amazon-fba-launch), and you should apply it to anyone you pay. ## Related answers - [Best tools for Amazon keyword research in first 90 days](https://flapen.com/blog/best-tools-for-amazon-keyword-research-in-first-90-days) - [Alternatives to heavy discounts during launch](https://flapen.com/blog/alternatives-to-heavy-discounts-during-launch) - [Best keyword tools for Amazon SEO](https://flapen.com/blog/best-keyword-tools-for-amazon-seo) - [Alternatives to aggressive PPC for early-stage ASINs](https://flapen.com/blog/alternatives-to-aggressive-ppc-for-early-stage-asins) - [Amazon seller roadmaps and capital: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/roadmaps-and-capital) To find out which of your keywords are actually winnable, request the free 48-hour audit at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Set up your Amazon seller account](https://flapen.com/guides/account-setup) - [Estimate your launch cost](https://flapen.com/tools/launch-cost-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**How long until a new listing ranks on page one?Do PPC sales really help organic rank?Should I optimize for many keywords or a few?How much do reviews matter for ranking? Can a price change move rank? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
