Get your GS1 barcode first, generate the FNSKU in Seller Central, send the label file to your supplier, and gate payment on a labeled-carton photo check. Factory labeling costs cents per unit and removes the most common cause of FBA check-in delays. ## The short version - **Label at the factory, not at a prep center.** Origin labeling costs cents per unit. The same fix at a prep center costs dollars and adds a week. - **License your barcode from GS1 directly.** Recycled reseller UPCs can collide with an existing catalog entry and lock your listing. - **The FNSKU comes from Seller Central, not from the supplier.** Generate it yourself and send the print file with the purchase order. - **Carton labels matter as much as unit labels.** A wrong box label strands the whole shipment at receiving, not just one unit. - **Gate the balance payment on photo proof.** Labeled unit, open carton, sealed carton, photographed before anything leaves the floor. ## Why labeling belongs at origin The most expensive labeling mistake is treating barcodes as a detail to sort out after production. There are three places a label can be applied: the factory floor, a third-party prep center, or Amazon's own labeling service. Only the factory applies it as part of production, where a mistake is caught by the same inspection that checks the product itself. Everywhere else, labeling is rework: an extra stop, an extra handling fee, extra days between paying for inventory and selling it. The working sequence is short. License a GS1 barcode for each variation. Create the listing in Seller Central, which generates the FNSKU. Export Amazon's label file as a PDF. Send that file with the purchase order, specifying thermal label stock and placement. Then verify by photo before the balance payment moves. ## The origin labeling scorecard Score any supplier or sourcing partner against this card before the first purchase order. One hundred points available. Below seventy, fix the gaps before production starts, because you will not fix them after. | Criterion | Weight | Full marks look like |
| --- | --- | --- | | FNSKU accuracy | 25 | Prints from your file, correct size, scans on the first pass | | Barcode hygiene | 20 | GS1-licensed code registered to your brand, one code per variation | | Carton labeling | 20 | FBA box ID labels on every carton, flat surface, never across a seam | | Packaging compliance | 15 | Correct polybag thickness and suffocation warnings where required | | Photo proof | 10 | Labeled unit, open carton, and sealed carton photographed before the balance payment | | Single-SKU discipline | 10 | One SKU per carton unless the shipment plan says otherwise | Weight barcode hygiene and FNSKU accuracy hardest because their failures are invisible until check-in. A crooked logo is caught by eye. A barcode registered to someone else surfaces weeks later as a blocked listing, long after the container sailed. ## Who should own this checklist If an agency or sourcing service manages your shipments, the question that predicts execution is workload. Ask how many brands each account manager carries. At Flapen the answer is about 1.4, about 70 brands across some 50 operators, and we hold that ratio so someone actually opens the pre-shipment photos instead of filing them unread. A manager carrying ten accounts approves labels on trust, and trust is not an inspection method. Labeling is also the tail end of a longer chain that starts with picking the right product. The front of that chain is the job of our [Amazon FBA product research](https://flapen.com/amazon-fba-product-research) service. The back end is checklist discipline like this page. ## What most prep partners will not tell you A prep center's margin grows when your factory fails. Relabeling, repacking, and polybagging are billable line items, so the incentive to help you move that work upstream, where it costs cents, is weak. Amazon's own label service has a different problem: it is convenient, but it removes your last inspection point, and an error discovered at check-in blocks the shipment rather than a single unit. The quiet truth of labeling is timing. Every error is cheap to fix while the goods are on the factory floor and expensive the moment the carton is sealed. The window closes when the container does. ## Related answers - [End to end Amazon sourcing and inspection services](https://flapen.com/blog/end-to-end-amazon-sourcing-and-inspection-services) - [Recommended sourcing workflow from idea to FBA](https://flapen.com/blog/recommended-sourcing-workflow-from-idea-to-fba) - [Europe VAT ready sourcing and prep for Amazon](https://flapen.com/blog/europe-vat-ready-sourcing-and-prep-for-amazon) - [Best countries to source electronics for Amazon](https://flapen.com/blog/best-countries-to-source-electronics-for-amazon) - [Amazon sourcing and product research services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/sourcing-and-research-services) If you would rather have origin labeling checked as part of a full account review, the free 48 hour audit from [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting) covers it. ## Keep learning - [Source the product](https://flapen.com/guides/product-sourcing) - [Calculate the tariff on a shipment](https://flapen.com/tools/tariff-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**Do I need a GS1 barcode if I am in Brand Registry? Can my supplier generate the FNSKU for me?What should the pre-shipment photos show?Is Amazon's FBA label service ever the right call? What happens if cartons arrive mislabeled? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
