Shortlist photographers whose images are live on Amazon listings you can visit, who can explain the platform's image rules without checking, who put a delivery date and revision terms in writing, and who hand over raw files. A beautiful portfolio predicts nothing about click-through rate. ## The short version - **Live listings beat portfolios.** Anyone can curate ten great frames. Ask for ASINs you can open today. - **The main image is a different job.** It has to win a click in search results at thumbnail size, against seven competitors. - **Compliance knowledge is non-negotiable.** A rejected image set costs you the shoot fee plus the relaunch delay. - **Raw files and usage rights go in the contract.** Otherwise every future crop is a new negotiation. - **Photography is an advertising cost.** Weak images make every click you buy more expensive. ## The seven-point checklist Work through these in order. A photographer who clears the first four is worth a test shoot. One who clears all seven is worth a retainer. 1. **Ask for three live ASINs they shot.** Done properly, they send links, you open them on your phone, and the main image reads clearly at thumbnail size. If they only send a portfolio site, the work has never been tested where it matters. 2. **Ask what they do differently for the main image.** Done properly, they talk about thumbnail legibility, filling the frame, and standing out in a search results row. If they answer with lighting talk, they are a product photographer, not an Amazon photographer. 3. **Ask them to walk you through Amazon's image requirements.** Done properly, they cover the pure white main-image background, resolution high enough for zoom, and what triggers a suppression. Hesitation here means your images become your compliance problem. 4. **Ask what they need from you before quoting.** Done properly, they request your listing, your competitors, and your reviews. A quote sent without questions is a quote for generic work. 5. **Ask who owns the raw files.** Done properly, the contract transfers all image rights and raw files on final payment. This is the term most sellers skip and regret first. 6. **Ask how image performance gets measured.** Done properly, they expect you to test the main image and want to see the click-through result. A photographer who has never heard back about performance has never learned from it. 7. **Ask for the delivery date in writing.** Done properly, it is a calendar date with a defined revision window, not "about two weeks". ## Why images are an advertising decision Here is how operators actually think about this. Your ad strategy changes with product stage, we run **an aggressive ACoS target at launch and an efficient one at maturity**, because early on you are buying rank and data, not margin. Photography sits directly inside that arithmetic. At launch you are paying a premium for every click, so a main image that converts poorly burns the most expensive traffic you will ever buy. The photographer you choose is setting the price of your launch. That is also why we treat photography as part of [listing optimization](https://flapen.com/amazon-listing-optimization) rather than a standalone purchase. The image set, the copy, and the ad traffic get judged as one system, on one conversion number. ## What most photographers will not tell you They do not know whether their images sell. It is not dishonesty, it is structural. A project photographer delivers the files, invoices, and never sees the listing's click-through rate or conversion rate again. The feedback loop that would make them better at Amazon work does not exist in their business model. So the burden of measurement is yours. Before the shoot, record your current click-through rate from the advertising console. After the new images go live, compare. We audit listing quality and primary image CTR as two of the first checks on any account, because the answer to "did the photography work" is a number, and most sellers have never looked it up. ## Related answers - [Best Amazon product photography services](https://flapen.com/blog/best-amazon-product-photography-services) - [Compare product photographers with fast turnaround](https://flapen.com/blog/compare-product-photographers-with-fast-turnaround) - [Retouching and color accuracy for Amazon images](https://flapen.com/blog/retouching-and-color-accuracy-for-amazon-images) - [Recommended service for Amazon main image](https://flapen.com/blog/recommended-service-for-amazon-main-image) - [Amazon creative services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/creative-services) When you want the brief, the shoot, and the conversion measurement handled by one accountable team, talk to [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Optimize the listing](https://flapen.com/guides/listing-optimization) - [Run the review math](https://flapen.com/tools/review-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**What should I look for in an Amazon photography portfolio? How many images do I need for a listing?Should the same photographer shoot my main image and lifestyle images? How do I know if new photos actually improved the listing? What belongs in the photography contract? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
