BSR follows units sold, so pull the three legitimate levers, more qualified traffic, better conversion, and the right category. Rank follows on its own cycle.

You move units, and rank follows on Amazon's own refresh cycle. Every legitimate lever reduces to three: send more qualified traffic, convert more of it, and sit in the right category. ## The short version - **BSR is an output, not an input.** Chasing the number instead of the units is how people end up buying fake orders. - **Category placement is the fastest legitimate change** and the most commonly overlooked one. - **Conversion rate beats traffic volume** because it improves every channel at once. - **Vine and a compliant review path build credibility** without touching Amazon's rules. - **Ask who does the work.** We do everything in house, and how a provider answers that question tells you what they will risk with your account. ## Score the levers before you pull them Not all rank levers are equal. Score your own situation on each row from 0 to 3, where 0 means untouched and 3 means done properly. The weight column reflects how much each one typically moves velocity for a new product. | Lever | Weight | Speed | What a 3 looks like |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | | Category and subcategory placement | 20 | Days | You are in the most specific accurate node, and you have checked what the rank threshold looks like there | | Primary image click-through | 20 | Days | The main image beats the current page one on a phone screen, not on a monitor | | Listing conversion elements | 20 | Days | Title, bullets, gallery and A+ answer the objections found in competitor reviews | | Advertising on defensible terms | 15 | Weeks | A funded exact-match set on terms you can hold, read twice weekly | | Review volume and quality | 15 | Weeks | Vine enrolled where eligible, plus compliant follow-up. No incentives, no gating | | Price and offer competitiveness | 5 | Hours | Priced against the actual page one, with coupons or deals used deliberately rather than permanently | | External and creator traffic | 5 | Weeks | At least one off-Amazon route sending qualified buyers rather than curiosity clicks | Add the weighted scores and divide by three. Below 50 percent, your rank problem is a listing problem. Above 80 percent and still stuck, the honest answer is usually that the product or the price is wrong. ### Why category placement sits at the top Rank is calculated within a node. The same daily unit volume produces a very different number depending on where the product sits, and many listings end up in a broad node by default because nobody checked. This is legitimate, reversible, and often the single fastest improvement available. It is not a trick, and it is not miscategorisation. Placing a product in a node it does not belong in is a policy risk, not a strategy. ## What black hat actually costs The tactics are familiar: purchased orders, incentivized reviews, review gating, search manipulation through click farms, and hijacking competitor listings. They work briefly and they are detectable, and the penalty is not a warning. It is suppression or suspension of the account you built everything on top of. Here is the part that gets less attention. The risk is often not taken by the seller. It is taken by a subcontractor the seller has never met, working for the agency, three time zones away, under pressure to show a rank result this month. This is one of the reasons we do all work in house with no subcontracting at all. When every person touching an account is on your own payroll and in your own office, nobody is quietly buying velocity to hit a number. ## What ranking services will not tell you A ranking service can move units for a few weeks. What it cannot do is make those units repeat. Rank built on a push decays back to whatever the listing converts at, which means the only durable rank improvement is a conversion improvement. Any offer priced per rank position rather than per unit of work is selling you a temporary number. The second thing rarely said: ask the provider directly who executes the work and where they sit. Not the account manager, the person writing the copy and clicking in your account. If the answer is vague, or if it involves partners, contractors or an unnamed network, you are accepting a risk on your Seller Central account that you cannot see or supervise. ## Related answers - [White hat ranking strategies for new listings](https://flapen.com/blog/white-hat-ranking-strategies-for-new-listings) - [Rank Amazon product fast without black hat](https://flapen.com/blog/rank-amazon-product-fast-without-black-hat) - [What to use for review generation within TOS](https://flapen.com/blog/what-to-use-for-review-generation-within-tos) - [Amazon agency red flags to watch out for](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-agency-red-flags-to-watch-out-for) - [Amazon launch services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/launch-services) If someone has promised you a rank position, send us the proposal and we will tell you what it implies, at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Plan the product launch](https://flapen.com/guides/product-launch) - [Estimate your launch cost](https://flapen.com/tools/launch-cost-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**How fast can BSR realistically improve?Do giveaways and heavy discounts improve rank?Is Amazon Vine allowed?Should I run external traffic to boost rank? What if my rank drops after a promotion ends? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
