Ship-and-shoot studios exist worldwide, but the real economics compare sample freight and delay cost against shooting at source near your factory.

Before you book one, run the arithmetic. Sample freight, customs, the waiting time, and the reshoot risk often cost more than shooting at source, next to your factory, before the goods ever leave the region. Location is the real price. ## The short version - **Ship-and-shoot is a logistics product wearing a creative label.** The shoot is days, the shipping is weeks. - **Count the calendar, not just the invoice.** Weeks in transit are weeks your launch waits. - **Reshoots are the hidden multiplier.** A missed angle means another sample crossing a border, or a compromise you live with. - **Shooting at source deletes the freight leg entirely.** The studio near the factory gets samples in days. - **Wherever you shoot, the sample pipeline matters more than the studio's postcode.**## The economics, line by line Ship-and-shoot exists because product photography is a logistics problem before it is a creative one. The studio needs the physical product, and moving physical products across borders costs money and, more painfully, time. So price any ship-and-shoot offer as a system, not a shoot. | Cost line | Ship-and-shoot abroad | Local studio in your market | Studio at source, near the factory |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | | Sample freight | International courier, per round | Domestic courier | Factory to studio, often same city | | Customs and paperwork | Yours to manage, both directions | None | None | | Calendar time before shooting | Weeks in transit and clearance | Days | Days from production line | | Reshoot cost | Another international cycle | Another courier and slot | Often same week | | Pre-launch shooting | Only after samples reach you | Only after import | Possible before goods ship at all | The last row is the one sellers miss. When photography happens at source, your images are being retouched while the inventory is still on the water, and the listing goes live the day stock arrives. When photography waits for imported samples, your launch waits with it, paying storage on inventory that cannot sell without images. This is why we put our sourcing and studio operation in Guangzhou. Samples walk from factories to our own studio, frameworks we have refined across **500 plus brands** decide the shot list, and quality control happens on the same visit. I am not claiming a courier can never beat that, for a seller with domestic suppliers a local studio wins outright. The point is to run the table above for your own supply chain instead of defaulting to whichever studio has the nicest website. ## The worked example to run on any quote Take a quote for a ship-and-shoot studio abroad and add four numbers of your own: the courier cost both ways, the customs handling, the days in transit each direction, and the value of a launch week. That last one is real money, if your product plans to sell $10,000 a month at maturity, a lost week of ramp is about $2,500 of delayed revenue, and images are on the critical path more often than any other launch asset. A studio that is $400 cheaper and three weeks slower is not cheaper. Then price one reshoot cycle. Assume you will need it, because first shoots miss an angle more often than anyone admits. The structure that makes reshoots cheap, same city, same week, is worth more than a discount on the first attempt. ## What ship-and-shoot studios will not tell you The queue starts when your box arrives, not when you book. Your samples can sit in receiving for days while earlier clients shoot, and the turnaround on the website quietly excludes that wait, along with customs delays they classify as your problem. Ask two questions in writing: what is the committed time from sample receipt to delivered files, and what happens to your samples afterward. Return shipping, disposal, or storage fees are all common, and all absent from the quote page. They also rarely mention compliance ownership. If a main image arrives non-compliant and your samples are already gone, your options are their goodwill or a compromised listing. Put reshoot obligations for failed images into the agreement while you still have leverage. We treat the image set as one deliverable with [listing optimization](https://flapen.com/amazon-listing-optimization), live, compliant, and converting, and that is the standard worth writing into any studio contract. ## Related answers - [Alternatives to freelancer marketplaces for product photos](https://flapen.com/blog/alternatives-to-freelancer-marketplaces-for-product-photos) - [Top product photo studios for FBA sellers](https://flapen.com/blog/top-product-photo-studios-for-fba-sellers) - [Best Amazon product photography services](https://flapen.com/blog/best-amazon-product-photography-services) - [Where to get product photos with models](https://flapen.com/blog/where-to-get-product-photos-with-models) - [Amazon creative services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/creative-services) Compare any ship-and-shoot quote against shooting at source with [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Optimize the listing](https://flapen.com/guides/listing-optimization) - [Run the review math](https://flapen.com/tools/review-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**What does ship-and-shoot mean exactly? How many samples should I send a studio? Is shooting near my factory better than shooting in my sales market? How do I brief a studio I will never visit? What should the contract include for a remote shoot? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
