Ask who writes the copy, who shoots the images, who runs the keyword mapping, and what happens to the listing after week four. A launch package that ends at go-live leaves you with a page nobody is responsible for improving. ## The short version - **Listing work is not a deliverable, it is a loop.** The first version is a hypothesis. - **Images are the expensive half** and the half most often outsourced quietly. - **Keyword mapping should be revisited from real search term data,** not written once at the start. - **Get the ownership terms in writing.** Copy and creative should be yours on payment. - **The question that separates providers: what would make you tell me to stop.** Most have no answer. You are likely comparing packages right now, and they all list the same line items. Listing optimization appears in every one of them. The differences are invisible on the sales page and obvious three months in, so here is how to see them before you sign. ## The sequence, and the gate that ends each stage A listing that is actually managed moves through six stages. Each has a gate. Ask any provider to walk you through their version and note where they get vague. 1. **Keyword and competitor mapping.** Gate: a written keyword set grouped by intent, plus the specific complaints appearing in competitor reviews. If this step produces only a volume-sorted list, the copy that follows will be generic. 2. **Copy build.** Gate: the title carries the main term without reading like a keyword dump, and every bullet answers a real objection from stage one. Copy that describes features nobody questioned is copy that converts nobody. 3. **Creative production.** Gate: primary image tested against the current page one at phone size, and a gallery that shows scale, use and the differentiator. This stage is where budgets get quietly reduced, because photography is the costliest input. 4. **Publish and index check.** Gate: the listing is findable for the priority terms. Publishing is not the same as being indexed, and skipping this check invalidates everything downstream. 5. **First data pass.** Gate: search term data reviewed, converting terms folded back into copy and campaigns, non-converting terms negated. This is the point at which most packages stop and where the real optimization begins. 6. **Scale, fix or kill.** Gate: an explicit decision, taken against criteria written before launch. ### The stage almost nobody sells That sixth gate is the one that matters and the one rarely included. Before a launch begins, agree the criteria that will decide the product's future: the rating trend, the return rate, the conversion rate and the trajectory of customer acquisition cost, each measured over a defined window. Then agree what each outcome triggers. Scale means add inventory and widen advertising. Fix means one defined intervention, usually creative or price, with a deadline. Kill means stop, and say so. I have this rule because I ignored it. Early on I put money into a failing product for three months, convinced that better advertising would turn it around. It did not. The listing was fine, the ads were competent, and the product was not wanted at that price. Three months of spend bought me a rule I now apply to every brand we run, including our own. ## What listing packages will not tell you Two things sit outside the sales page. First, who physically does the work. Copy and photography are the two most commonly subcontracted parts of a launch, which is how you end up with images that look like a different brand than the ones on your website. Ask where the studio is and whether it belongs to the company. Ours is in Dubai and staffed in house, and I mention that not as a boast but because it is a question you can ask anyone and get a revealing answer. Second, what happens to the assets if you leave. Deliverables should become your intellectual property once you have paid, and you should keep the Seller Central account, the campaigns and the creative on exit, along with a written handover. Providers keep their own internal tools and methods, which is fair. If a proposal is silent on this, ask before signing rather than after. ## Related answers - [Agencies that handle listing creation images and PPC](https://flapen.com/blog/agencies-that-handle-listing-creation-images-and-ppc) - [Best product photography and A plus content services](https://flapen.com/blog/best-product-photography-and-a-plus-content-services) - [What does a good Amazon account audit include](https://flapen.com/blog/what-does-a-good-amazon-account-audit-include) - [Contract terms to negotiate with Amazon agencies](https://flapen.com/blog/contract-terms-to-negotiate-with-amazon-agencies) - [Amazon launch services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/launch-services) Ask us for the kill criteria we would write for your product before you buy anything, at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Plan the product launch](https://flapen.com/guides/product-launch) - [Estimate your launch cost](https://flapen.com/tools/launch-cost-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**How often should a listing be revised after launch? Is listing optimization usually an extra cost?Who owns the copy and images afterwards? What if the listing is optimized and sales still do not come? Can I keep listing work in house and outsource only advertising? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
