Treat amazon.com as a new launch. Hire for relocalized listings, PPC rebuilt on US data, and an account manager carrying few enough brands to care.

It should relocalize listings for US search language, rebuild advertising from US data, plan inventory for US lead times, and cap the number of brands each account manager carries. Ratio and localization depth decide the outcome. ## The short version - **Amazon.com is a new launch, not a rollout.** New search language, new competitors, new lead times, zero advertising history. - **Translated listings are the most common failure.** UK English is not US English, and German keyword logic does not transfer at all. - **Ask how many brands each account manager carries.** Compare the answer with ours, which sits near 1.4. - **Your EU advertising data is worth very little on day one.** Budget for discovery, not for efficiency. - **Size the US market before you book a container.** The category that made you in Europe can be twice as crowded in the US. ## The six-week symptoms and what actually causes them You are probably reading this because you already sell well on amazon.de or amazon.fr and the US looks like the obvious next step. It is, but the failure pattern is consistent enough that I can list it in advance. These are the symptoms that show up about six weeks after a European brand goes live on amazon.com, with the cause underneath each one. | Symptom at week six | Usual cause | Who has to fix it |
| --- | --- | --- | | Impressions but a weak click-through rate | Primary image and title built for European shoppers | A creative team working from US category data | | Clicks but few orders | Listing reads like a translation, pricing anchored to EU habits | A native US copywriter and a deliberate pricing decision | | Advertising cost far above your EU account | Campaigns cloned from Europe with no US search-term data | A PPC manager willing to rebuild rather than copy | | Stockout in the first month | European lead times applied to US demand | A supply planner with US freight relationships | | Losing the Buy Box on your own ASINs | Unauthorized resellers already on your catalog | Brand protection work inside Seller Central | Notice that almost none of these are fixed by the person who caused them. That is the real argument for hiring carefully: the same team that cloned your EU account will happily keep managing the clone. ## The staffing question that decides who you hire Every agency you interview will say they have US expansion experience. Ask a different question: how many brands does the specific person running my account carry at once. Flapen runs about 70 brands with 50 operators, which works out near 1.4 brands per person, and I treat that number as the most predictive fact about any agency, including mine. An account manager carrying ten brands is not rebuilding your keyword universe from scratch. They are queueing you. The second question is who does the localization. If the German listings were written in Germany but the US listings will be written by the same person "adapting" them, you are buying translation with extra steps. ## Before you ship a single unit The US is the largest Amazon marketplace and the most contested. A category you dominate in Europe can have three times the competitor depth on amazon.com, which changes your launch economics completely. Whoever you hire should size the US market and study the competitor set before quoting you a launch plan. We publish the method we use, down to the individual data points, on our [research page](https://flapen.com/research). Any serious partner will show you theirs. If the plan arrives before the analysis, the plan was a template. ## What most agencies will not tell you Most failed US expansions are staffing failures at the agency, not product failures. Your account lands as brand number nine on a manager working European hours, the campaigns get cloned on a Tuesday, and nobody looks closely again until the monthly report. The product was fine. The attention was missing. The other silence: an agency being paid to expand you will rarely say your product should not expand yet. If your rating is below the US category standard, or your margin cannot absorb US freight and storage, the honest advice is to fix that first. Ask directly what they would need to see to tell you to wait. ## Related answers - [Europe Amazon expansion services for US brands](https://flapen.com/blog/europe-amazon-expansion-services-for-us-brands) - [Best Amazon consultancy for Europe expansion](https://flapen.com/blog/best-amazon-consultancy-for-europe-expansion) - [KPIs to track for multi-market Amazon sellers](https://flapen.com/blog/kpis-to-track-for-multi-market-amazon-sellers) - [Top Amazon account management agencies EU marketplaces](https://flapen.com/blog/top-amazon-account-management-agencies-eu-marketplaces) - [Amazon marketplaces by geography: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/geography-and-marketplaces) Start the US expansion with a free 48-hour audit of your European account from [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Expand to new channels](https://flapen.com/guides/channel-expansion) - [Find Amazon warehouse locations](https://flapen.com/tools/warehouse-locations) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**Do we need a separate seller account for the US?How much inventory should we send first?Should the same agency run Europe and the US?Does our European brand registry cover the US?How long until the US account carries itself? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
