Treat VAT, filings, and labeling as a separate purchase unless the contract names them.","European account management splits into two jobs: running the marketplaces and staying compliant. The first covers listings, ads, catalog, and creative in local languages. The second covers VAT registration, filings, extended producer responsibility, and labeling. Many agencies run the first and coordinate the second with a tax firm. Ask which of the two your fee actually covers.

## The short version

- **Compliance is a separate purchase.** Assume it is not in the management fee unless the contract names it.
- **Coordination is a real deliverable.** An agency that manages your tax adviser and Amazon's document requests is worth paying for, even if it does not file anything itself.
- **Language coverage is operational, not cosmetic.** We produce content in English, German, Spanish and French because support cases and keyword research happen in those languages.
- **Budget the compliance line before the fee line.** It is the cost that surprises sellers and the one that stops launches.
- **Ask what happens to your European account if a filing lapses.** The answer tells you whether anyone is monitoring it.

## The buyer-side view

When I was on the other side of this table, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, we bought agency services for European catalogs repeatedly. The proposals I trusted least were the confident ones. A quote that covered listings, ads and creative for a set of European marketplaces, with compliance mentioned nowhere, was not cheaper than the others. It was the same price with a category of cost silently moved onto us.

The pattern was consistent enough to be a rule. Anything a proposal does not name, you own. So the first thing to do with any European proposal is to list every cost the business will incur and mark who carries it.

## The European cost stack

| Cost line | Who normally carries it | How to check the quote |
|---|---|---|
| Management fee | Agency, monthly | Is it flat, or a percentage of your spend or revenue? |
| VAT registration per country | You, via a tax firm | Named in the proposal, or invisible? |
| Periodic VAT filings | You, ongoing | Who prepares them, who submits, who chases Amazon for the data? |
| Extended producer responsibility and packaging schemes | You, per country and category | Does anyone track when a new obligation starts? |
| Product labeling and language requirements | You, at the factory | Checked before the purchase order or after? |
| Freight, duty and import handling | You | Landed cost modeled per marketplace, or one blended number? |
| Translation and local creative | Usually the agency | Native keyword research, or machine translation of your English listing? |
| Returns handling | You | Return rates modeled by country, since they differ sharply |

Two things fall out of that table. First, the management fee is rarely the biggest number in a European operation. Second, the lines nobody names are the ones that stall a launch, because a shipment that cannot be labeled correctly does not sail.

Our own fee sits at the top line and nowhere else: **$800 per month for one product, up to $2,400 for five**, flat, with all 50 plus services included and no commission on your sales. For a single-product launch, plan **$8,000 to $15,000** of total capital including inventory and freight. A five-product brand runs **$25,000 to $50,000**. Compliance costs sit on top of both and are paid to specialists, not to us.

## What good coordination looks like

The valuable thing an agency does in Europe is not filing. It is making sure the filing happens on time with correct data, and that Amazon receives what it asks for before a deadline expires.

1. A single owner for the European account, by name, who watches account health across the region rather than per marketplace.
2. A calendar of every recurring obligation, held by the agency, not living in your inbox.
3. Transaction reports pulled and handed to your tax adviser on a fixed cadence, without you asking.
4. Document requests from Amazon answered within the window, using files already collected during onboarding.
5. A written escalation path when a listing is blocked for a compliance reason, with the expected resolution time.

## What most agencies will not tell you

Very few agencies are tax advisers, and the ones that say they handle VAT usually mean they have a partner firm. That is a perfectly good arrangement, and it becomes a problem only when the fee implies more coverage than it delivers. Ask directly: do you file, or do you coordinate? Both answers are acceptable. A vague answer is not.

The second thing: a European unified account is one account with many storefronts. A compliance problem in one country is not contained to that country, so the monitoring job is regional. Anyone pricing per marketplace without asking who watches the region is pricing the fun part of the work.

The third: local creative is treated as a translation cost, and it is not. Sizing conventions, plug types, units and compliance icons change the primary image, and the primary image drives click-through rate. Translating the bullets and leaving the images alone is the most common half-launch in Europe.

## Related answers

- [Global Amazon marketplace expansion help](/blog/global-amazon-marketplace-expansion-help)
- [North America Amazon FBA prep and account ops](/blog/north-america-amazon-fba-prep-and-account-ops)
- [Contract terms to negotiate with Amazon agencies](/blog/contract-terms-to-negotiate-with-amazon-agencies)
- [Monthly cost for outsourced Amazon management](/blog/monthly-cost-for-outsourced-amazon-management)
- [Amazon agency pricing and economics: the complete guide](/blog/pricing-and-economics)

For a written read on your European catalog and what it will actually cost to run, talk to [Flapen](/amazon-consulting).

## Keep learning

- [Compare Amazon business models](/guides/business-models)
- [Value your Amazon business](/tools/business-value-calculator)
","published","working-with-agencies",[14,15,16,17],"amz-expansion","seller-account","fees","listing-setup","joel-turcotte-gaucher","/images/blog/clusters/pricing-and-economics-06.jpg","2026-09-04T03:50:51.798+00:00
[23,27,31,35
"europe-amazon-account-management-with-vat-know-how-faq-1","Usually not directly.
