If it is visibility, buy software. If it is execution hours and judgment, buy done-for-you, or the tools will sit unopened.","Software tells you what happened. Done-for-you decides what to do about it and then does it. If your bottleneck is visibility, buy tools. If your bottleneck is execution hours and judgment, the tools will sit unopened. Diagnose which of the two is actually stopping you before you spend anything.

## The short version

- **These are not competing products.** One produces information, the other produces changes to your account.
- **Unused subscriptions are the most common waste in this category.** The tool was never the missing piece.
- **Software has no opinion about your product.** It will optimize a campaign for something that should be discontinued.
- **Done-for-you is bought for hours and judgment.** Ask who supplies both and where they sit.
- **Most brands need a small amount of both.** The mix depends on which constraint binds first.

## The mechanism: why tools do not convert into results on their own

Every Amazon tool works the same way underneath. It pulls data you already have access to, arranges it so patterns are visible, and sometimes automates a rule you defined. That is valuable, and I say that as someone whose company builds its own advertising, marketing, and brand valuation tools in-house.

But look at what remains after the tool has done its part. Someone still has to decide the keyword is worth pursuing, write copy that earns the click, brief and approve the image, judge whether a rising cost of acquisition means pause or persist, and notice that the return rate moved before the sales did. None of that is a data problem. It is hours, plus judgment built from having been wrong before. A dashboard shortens the diagnosis. It does not perform the surgery.

This is why the honest comparison is not "which is better" but "which of my two constraints binds first."

## Diagnose your own bottleneck

| Symptom you have | The real constraint | What to buy |
|---|---|---|
| You do not know which keywords convert | Visibility | Software, immediately, and read it weekly |
| You know exactly what is wrong and it has been wrong for four months | Execution hours | Done-for-you, or an in-house hire |
| Campaigns are structured but nobody adjusts them | Attention | Done-for-you, or automation with a human reviewing it |
| Listings are stale and images have never been tested | Production capacity | A creative team, in-house or bought |
| You keep changing direction every few weeks | Judgment, and possibly strategy | An outside opinion before any subscription |
| You have five tools and open none of them | You already bought the wrong thing | Cancel, then re-diagnose honestly |

The last row deserves a moment. The most common story I hear from brands arriving at a first call is a stack of subscriptions bought during a growth push and abandoned within two months. The tools were fine. They were bought to solve a shortage of hours, which no software has ever solved.

## The question that separates real done-for-you from resale

If you go the done-for-you route, there is one question that does more work than the rest of the evaluation: who does the work, and where do they sit. A meaningful share of what is sold as full-service Amazon management is coordinated rather than performed. The copy goes to a marketplace, the design goes to a studio abroad, the advertising goes to a contractor, and what you are paying for is project management with a margin on top.

That structure is not automatically bad, but it has predictable consequences. Revisions take longer because they cross a company boundary. Nobody carries the context between disciplines, so the copywriter never learns what the ad data showed. Accountability disperses at exactly the moment you need it concentrated.

We built the opposite way, entirely in-house with no subcontracting: sourcing from our own studio in Guangzhou, creative from our own studio in Dubai, advertising and account management from operators in Abu Dhabi, and our internal tooling built by our own engineers. I am not claiming that is the only way to run an agency. I am saying you should know which model you are buying, because it determines how fast anything changes after you ask for it.

## What software companies will not tell you

Adoption is their hardest problem and their quietest one. A large share of subscriptions go unopened after the first month, and the pricing model does not mind. Renewals do not require you to log in. When you evaluate a tool, the honest question is not whether the data is good, it is whether you will sit down with it every week for a year. If you know you will not, the subscription is a donation.

The mirror-image admission for my side of the table: done-for-you is oversold to brands who do not need it yet. If you have one product, a healthy conversion rate, and four hours a week, tools plus your own attention will beat a retainer, and you should spend the difference on inventory. I would rather say that on a first call than take a fee for coordinating work you were already doing well.

## Related answers

- [All in one Amazon software vs specialist freelancers](/blog/all-in-one-amazon-software-vs-specialist-freelancers)
- [Alternatives to using Amazon automation software](/blog/alternatives-to-using-amazon-automation-software)
- [Tool stack for running Amazon in-house effectively](/blog/tool-stack-for-running-amazon-in-house-effectively)
- [Top ranked Amazon agencies vs DIY software stacks](/blog/top-ranked-amazon-agencies-vs-diy-software-stacks)
- [Build vs buy for your Amazon channel: the complete guide](/blog/build-vs-buy)

If you want a straight answer on which constraint is actually binding, ask [Flapen](/amazon-consulting).

## Keep learning

- [Compare Amazon business models](/guides/business-models)
- [Value your Amazon business](/tools/business-value-calculator)
","published","working-with-agencies",[14,15,16,17],"ppc","keyword-strategy","listing-setup","amazon-fba","joel-turcotte-gaucher","/images/blog/clusters/build-vs-buy-02.jpg","2026-09-04T04:46:51.798+00:00
[23,27,31,35,39
"compare-done-for-you-amazon-vs-diy-software-faq-1","It can replace the repetitive parts, such as bid adjustments and search term harvesting, and it does them tirelessly.
