Trademark, sampling, photography, and inbound receiving are the four costliest delays in a seven month launch. Each comes from starting late, so overlap them.

Each is caused by starting late rather than by anything going wrong. A full brand launch runs about seven months, and most of that is queue time you can overlap. ## The short version - **Trademark is the longest queue and the earliest possible start.** File before you finalize anything else. - **Sampling takes rounds, not weeks.** Budget for three rounds and order them in parallel with different factories. - **Photography waits on physical product.** Ship samples to the studio, do not wait for mass production. - **Inbound receiving is not instant.** Units arriving at a fulfillment center are not units that are sellable. - **Advertising targets should be agreed before the delay panic starts.** The number you accept at launch is not the number you accept at maturity. The mistake that costs the most is treating a launch as a relay race. Each stage waits for the previous one to finish, a single slip pushes everything right, and a seven month plan becomes an eleven month plan without anyone making a bad decision. Launches run late because they were sequenced, not because they were mismanaged. ## The seven stages and the gate that ends each one Run these as overlapping tracks. The gate is what has to be true before the next stage can safely begin, and nothing else. 1. **Market and product selection.** Gate: you can state the size of the market, the return rate risk, and what you will do differently, in writing. Start the trademark the same week this gate closes. 2. **Trademark filing and brand identity.** Gate: application filed and brand name locked. This is the single longest queue in a launch and the only one you cannot compress with money or effort. Everything downstream inherits the name, from packaging and listing to Brand Registry and A+ content, so a late filing delays four other stages at once. 3. **Supplier selection and sampling.** Gate: a physical sample you would sell, from a factory that has quoted your real order quantity. Run three suppliers at once rather than sequentially. The cost of two extra sample sets is trivial next to a month lost discovering that supplier one cannot hold tolerance. 4. **Creative production.** Gate: primary image and full image stack approved. Photography needs the actual product in hand. Send an approved sample directly to whoever is shooting, rather than waiting for the production run, and you recover several weeks. 5. **Listing build and Brand Registry.** Gate: listing live in draft with keyword mapping done, Brand Registry approved. Registry depends on the trademark, which is why stage two sits where it does. 6. **Production and freight.** Gate: units booked, inspected before they leave, and a shipment plan created. Inspection at the factory is far cheaper than discovering a defect after freight. 7. **Inbound and go live.** Gate: units checked in and buyable. Add real calendar time here. Receiving is a queue like any other. ### Where the advertising target belongs in this sequence Agree your advertising cost of sale target at stage five, before anything is under time pressure. The target changes by product stage: aggressive while you are buying rank on a new listing, efficient once the product is mature and the job is margin. Teams that skip this conversation end up arguing about advertising efficiency during a launch, which is the one moment when the aggressive number is the correct one. Ask any agency you are considering for both numbers, the launch figure and the maturity figure, and ask what moves you from one to the other. ## What most agencies will not tell you about delays About half of the delay in a typical launch is not supplier delay. It is decision delay on the client side, waiting for a packaging color approval, a copy sign-off, a name choice. Providers rarely say this because it sounds like blame. It is not blame. It is a scheduling fact, and the fix is boring: name one decision maker, set a default response window, and agree that silence past that window means the recommended option proceeds. The second unspoken thing: nobody can compress a trademark queue. When a launch timeline promises otherwise, what is really being promised is launching without Brand Registry and retrofitting later. That is a legitimate choice, but it should be a choice you made rather than a surprise you discovered. ## Related answers - [Timeline for Amazon FBA launch from sourcing to PPC](https://flapen.com/blog/timeline-for-amazon-fba-launch-from-sourcing-to-ppc) - [Ideal launch day schedule for Amazon new product](https://flapen.com/blog/ideal-launch-day-schedule-for-amazon-new-product) - [Amazon launch timeline for seasonal products](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-launch-timeline-for-seasonal-products) - [Pre-launch vs post-launch tasks on Amazon](https://flapen.com/blog/pre-launch-vs-post-launch-tasks-amazon) - [Amazon launch services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/launch-services) Send us your current launch plan and we will mark the stages that are sequenced when they could be parallel, at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Plan the product launch](https://flapen.com/guides/product-launch) - [Estimate your launch cost](https://flapen.com/tools/launch-cost-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**How long does a full brand launch take?Which delay is the most expensive? Can I launch before Brand Registry approval? How do I stop client-side decisions from slowing things down? How much of my own time will a launch take? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
