Test the person on a live listing in the target language, and treat Mexico, Spain, and Brazil separately.","Bilingual is the minimum, native reading ability is the standard. A manager who speaks the language but does not read local reviews and search behavior will still ship translated listings. When hiring, test the person rather than the agency: ask them to critique a live listing in the target language during the call.

## The short version

- **The language you need is the one the reviews are written in.** Buying signals live in complaints, not in your brief.
- **Ask which locales the provider writes in, and which they only speak.** They are different capabilities and providers blur them.
- **Spanish for Mexico and Spanish for Spain are not interchangeable.** Same language, different search terms, different competitors, different price expectations.
- **Portuguese is a separate question.** If Brazil is in your plan, ask any candidate to show Portuguese work, mine included.
- **One manager who reads the market beats three who report on it.** Coverage is easy to buy, comprehension is not.

## What I learned buying this from the other side

Before Flapen I ran data and technology at BRANDED and at Moonshot Brands, two large Amazon aggregators. Part of that job was buying agency support for brands spread across European and Latin American marketplaces, which meant I sat on the client side of exactly this decision more times than I would like to count.

The pattern was consistent. Vendors sold coverage. What we actually needed was comprehension. A staffing sheet showing five languages told us nothing about whether anyone had read the one star reviews in Italian and understood that the product was being returned for a reason the English listing never addressed. When a market underperformed, the reporting always arrived in fluent English and the problem always sat in a language nobody had read.

## How bilingual account management fails, ranked by cost

| Failure mode | What it looks like | What it costs |
|---|---|---|
| Translation sold as localization | Bullets rendered word for word from English | The whole market. You rank for phrases nobody searches |
| Language without market context | Correct grammar, wrong price positioning and claims | Traffic that does not convert, and you blame the ads |
| Reviews never read in-language | Rating slides, cause unknown, return rate rises | Compounding. Rating drives conversion, conversion drives rank |
| One Spanish for every Spanish market | Mexico run on Spain's keywords | Half your LATAM ceiling, quietly |
| Coverage by rotating freelancers | New name every quarter, context lost each time | Repeat mistakes, and nobody accountable at renewal |
| Manager reports but does not decide | Weekly summary, no changes made | The fee, plus the months |

The top two are where most money goes. The bottom two are where most trust goes, and the second is harder to recover.

### Translation sold as localization

A translated listing is grammatically fine and commercially dead. Search behavior is local. The literal German rendering of your best English keyword may be a phrase no buyer types, and the Mexican shopper and the Spanish shopper do not describe the same product the same way. Keywords must be researched in the market, then the copy is written around them. Doing it in the other order produces text that reads well and ranks for nothing.

### Reviews never read in-language

This is the failure that hides longest. Rating drives conversion, conversion drives rank, and rank drives everything else. If nobody on the account reads the local negative reviews weekly, you find out from the sales chart months after you could have found out from the text. We build differentiation from competitor negative reviews and the rating gap rather than from invention, and that only works if somebody is actually reading in the language the buyer wrote in.

## The test to run on your call

1. **Put a live listing in the target language on the screen.** One of yours or a competitor's, unannounced.
2. **Ask them to read the last five one star reviews aloud and summarize the pattern.** You are testing comprehension, not vocabulary.
3. **Ask for three search terms they would check first, in-language.** Then ask why those three.
4. **Ask who will actually do this work weekly, and where that person sits.** Get a name.
5. **Ask what they cannot cover.** Any honest answer here is worth more than the four before it.

Question five is the one I care about most. Our content is produced in English, German, Spanish, and French, and we work across all 23 Amazon marketplaces. If your plan depends on a locale outside that set, you should hear it from the agency before you sign, not after your first Brazilian launch stalls.

## What most agencies will not tell you

Language coverage is the easiest thing on a capability deck to inflate and the hardest for a buyer to verify. A staffing page listing eight languages usually means eight people are reachable, not that eight people are assigned to your account, and almost never that any of them will be in your weekly review.

The related quiet truth: a bilingual manager is not automatically a good operator. The scarce skill is Amazon judgment, and language is what makes that judgment usable in your market. Given a choice between a fluent generalist and a strong operator with a native researcher beside them, take the second. We keep all of it in-house rather than subcontracting the language layer, because a translation vendor cannot be held to a conversion rate.

## Related answers

- [Amazon brand management for EU marketplaces](/blog/amazon-brand-management-for-eu-marketplaces)
- [Global Amazon marketplace expansion consultants](/blog/global-amazon-marketplace-expansion-consultants)
- [North America Amazon wholesale and private label support](/blog/north-america-amazon-wholesale-and-private-label-support)
- [Questions to ask before hiring an Amazon agency](/blog/questions-to-ask-before-hiring-an-amazon-agency)
- [Done-for-you Amazon management: the complete guide](/blog/done-for-you-management)

Ask us which locales we write in and which we do not before anything else at [Flapen](/amazon-consulting).

## Keep learning

- [Compare Amazon business models](/guides/business-models)
- [Value your Amazon business](/tools/business-value-calculator)
","published","working-with-agencies",[14,15,16],"amz-expansion","listing-setup","seller-account","joel-turcotte-gaucher","/images/blog/clusters/done-for-you-management-01.jpg","2026-09-04T05:35:51.798+00:00
[22,26,30,34,38
"bilingual-amazon-account-managers-for-europe-and-latam-faq-1","No. You need one accountable operator and native research and copy per locale.
