Weight five capabilities: sourcing and quality control, research depth, listing and creative production, advertising, and account health. Score every candidate out of a hundred using evidence they supply, and hire the one whose weakest area matters least to you. ## The short version - **Private label is five jobs sold under one label.** Most providers are strong at one or two of them. - **Weight the criteria before you meet anyone.** Otherwise the best presenter wins rather than the best fit. - **Research depth is measurable.** Ask what they analyze beyond review counts and monthly revenue. - **Sourcing without inspection is a referral, not a service.** Ask who physically checks the goods and where they stand. - **Score on evidence, not answers.** Every criterion below has an artifact attached to it. ## Why this category resists comparison The phrase covers everything from a $300 keyword report to a team that finds the product, negotiates the factory, inspects the goods, builds the listing, shoots the images, runs the campaigns, and defends the account when a listing is suppressed. Two providers can use identical language on their websites and be selling work that differs by a factor of ten in cost and in consequence. That is why comparison by impression fails. You are not evaluating quality in the abstract, you are checking whether a specific set of jobs will be performed, by whom, and with what evidence that they were performed before. A scorecard forces that, and it also forces you to admit which jobs you intend to keep in house. ## The scorecard Weights below are a sensible default for a first private label brand. Move them, but move them before you start scoring. | Criterion | Weight | What a strong answer looks like | What a weak answer looks like |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | | Product research depth | 25% | Named data points across market size, growth, returns, segment dynamics, rating gap | Screenshots of a keyword tool and a revenue estimate | | Sourcing and quality control | 25% | Own people at the factory, documented inspection protocol, a named studio | A directory search and a forwarded quote | | Listing and creative | 20% | Copy and imagery built from one keyword list, with before and after data | A portfolio with no performance numbers | | Advertising | 20% | Two efficiency targets by stage, a structure they can draw on a whiteboard | A promise about a percentage improvement | | Account health and compliance | 10% | A named process for suppressions, policy checks before launch | Silence, or a referral to a third party | Score each out of ten, multiply by weight, and total. Anything above about 75 is a serious candidate. What matters more than the total is the shape: a provider scoring 9 on creative and 3 on sourcing is the right hire only if you already own the supplier relationship. ## How to collect the evidence 1. **Ask for the research file on a product they declined.** The reasoning behind a rejection reveals depth far better than a success story does. 2. **Ask what they analyze besides reviews and revenue.** Our own selection runs on more than 90 data points, and the list itself is not secret. Any serious team can name theirs. 3. **Ask who inspects the goods.** You want a person, a location, and a protocol. Flapen inspects through our own Guangzhou studio using frameworks built across more than 500 brands, and no part of it is subcontracted. 4. **Ask for a listing they rebuilt with the eight weeks of data that followed.** One product, one artifact, one dataset. 5. **Ask what happens when a listing is suppressed on a Friday.** The answer tells you whether account health is somebody's job or nobody's. ## How the provider types usually score A sourcing agent scores high on the second criterion and near zero on the last three. A creative studio inverts that. A launch coach scores on none of them directly, because a coach is selling your own capability rather than performing the work, which can be the right purchase if time is what you have and money is not. A full-service agency scores across all five or it is not full service. The question to press on is subcontracting: if the sourcing, the photography, or the advertising moves to a partner, the score belongs to the partner, and you should be told the partner's name before you sign. ## What most agencies will not tell you Product research is the cheapest stage and the one that decides everything after it, which is exactly why it gets compressed. Compressing it is invisible for months. You feel it when a product with real demand turns out to have a return rate that eats the margin, or a rating ceiling nobody checked. The second thing: a provider who says yes to every product idea you bring is telling you something about their business model, not about your idea. Bring a deliberately mediocre product to the sales call and see whether anyone pushes back. The answer to that one question is worth more than the rest of the meeting. ## Related answers - [What products to start with for first Amazon private label](https://flapen.com/blog/what-products-to-start-with-for-first-amazon-private-label) - [How to source from manufacturers safely and verify quality](https://flapen.com/blog/how-to-source-from-manufacturers-safely-and-verify-quality) - [Agencies that handle A to Z Amazon brand setup](https://flapen.com/blog/agencies-that-handle-a-to-z-amazon-brand-setup) - [How to launch a private label on Amazon step by step](https://flapen.com/blog/how-to-launch-a-private-label-on-amazon-step-by-step) - [Amazon launch services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/launch-services) Score us on the same five criteria before you decide anything, starting with the free written audit at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Plan the product launch](https://flapen.com/guides/product-launch) - [Estimate your launch cost](https://flapen.com/tools/launch-cost-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**What should private label management cost per month?Do I need a separate sourcing agent? How do I check a provider's research depth quickly?Should I hire before or after I have a product? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
