Launch advertising buys ranking data before it buys profit. The practice that matters most is who reads that data, and how many other brands they read it for.

## The short version

- **Start narrow.** A launch budget spread across forty keywords buys position on none of them.
- **Exact match carries the launch.** Broad and automatic campaigns are research instruments, not ranking instruments.
- **Budget caps are a ranking decision.** A campaign that runs dry by noon hands the afternoon to your competitors.
- **Search term reports go stale in days.** Read them twice a week while the listing is new, not once a month.
- **Ask how many accounts the person clicking the buttons carries.** Our operators run about 1.4 brands each, and that ratio predicts more than any dashboard.

## Score your own launch PPC setup

This is the scorecard I use when I look at a new client's advertising in the first week. Score every row from 0 to 3, multiply by the weight, add it up, then divide by three. That gives you a percentage.

| Practice | Weight | What a 3 looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword shortlist | 20 | Five to ten exact-match terms drawn from real search volume, each one you could plausibly hold |
| Campaign separation | 15 | Exact, phrase and automatic kept apart, so research spend is never mistaken for ranking spend |
| Budget adequacy | 15 | Priority campaigns still have budget left in the evening |
| Search term hygiene | 15 | Report reviewed twice weekly, negatives added, winning terms promoted into their own campaign |
| Listing readiness | 15 | Title, images, bullets and A+ content signed off before the first dollar goes out |
| Reporting cadence | 10 | A written weekly update that names keyword positions, not only spend and sales |
| Operator load | 10 | You know how many other brands your account manager is carrying this month |

Under 60 percent, your launch advertising is paying twice for discovery you already funded. Above 85 percent, the only remaining variable is patience.

### Why operator load sits on the scorecard

Launch advertising is not a set-and-forget discipline. It is a daily reading job for the first several weeks, and reading takes attention that does not scale by adding software. We keep the ratio near 1.4 brands per operator for exactly that reason. When you interview a provider, ask the question plainly: how many accounts does the person touching my campaigns handle right now. If the answer is fifteen, your launch will be managed by rules, not by judgment.

## The practices that carry the most weight

1. **Choose keywords you can defend.** A launch does not need the head term. It needs three to five mid-tail phrases where the top results are beatable on images, price or review quality. Winning a smaller auction and holding it beats renting a place on a term you lose the week the budget dips.
2. **Split research from ranking.** Automatic and broad campaigns exist to surface search terms you did not think of. Exact campaigns exist to hold position on terms you chose. Mixing them makes your reporting meaningless, because you cannot tell which spend bought a lesson and which bought a rank.
3. **Fund fewer campaigns deeper.** Five campaigns at a small daily cap each will all underperform. Two campaigns funded to run the full day will not. Depth beats breadth for the entire launch period.
4. **Work the search term report like a shift.** Twice a week, pull it, add negatives for anything irrelevant, and promote converting terms into their own exact campaign. This single habit separates launches that compound from launches that plateau.
5. **Agree the review rhythm before launch day.** Decide now who reads the numbers, on which day, and what change they are allowed to make without asking. Ambiguity here costs a week every time something surprising happens.

## What a PPC agency will not tell you

Most launch advertising fails for a reason that has nothing to do with bidding. The campaigns are fine. Nobody is reading them. Software will pause a losing keyword, but software will not notice that three of your converting search terms describe a use case your listing never mentions, which is the sort of finding that changes a launch.

The second thing rarely said out loud: a proposal that promises a specific advertising cost of sale in the first month is guessing. Nobody knows your conversion rate before the traffic arrives. What can honestly be committed is a process and a cadence, not a number. When we onboard a brand we run an audit, assign a manager, identify blockers and execute, and we tell clients to expect measurable improvement inside thirty days. That is a commitment about work, not a forecast about your market.

## Related answers

- [When to start PPC in an Amazon launch timeline](/blog/when-to-start-ppc-in-an-amazon-launch-timeline)
- [How to boost Amazon BSR quickly without black hat](/blog/how-to-boost-amazon-bsr-quickly-without-black-hat)
- [KPIs an Amazon agency should report weekly](/blog/kpis-an-amazon-agency-should-report-weekly)
- [Recommended services for Amazon PPC during launch](/blog/recommended-services-for-amazon-ppc-during-launch)
- [Amazon launch services: the complete guide](/blog/launch-services)

If you want a second reading of your launch campaigns before you scale them, the free audit is at [Flapen](/amazon-consulting).

## Keep learning

- [Plan the product launch](/guides/product-launch)
- [Estimate your launch cost](/tools/launch-cost-calculator)
","published","product-launch",[14,15,16,17],"ppc","keyword-strategy","organic-ranking","amazon-fba","joel-turcotte-gaucher","/images/blog/clusters/launch-services-09.jpg","2026-09-04T07:53:51.798+00:00
[23,27,31,35,39
"best-practices-for-fba-ppc-during-launch-faq-1","There is no universal minimum, but below about $1,000 a month there is not enough data for meaningful optimization.
