Buy the two or three things that are expensive to redo, handle the rest yourself, and refuse any offer where you cannot name who does the work. Most budget failures come from paying a low price for a quietly subcontracted result. ## The short version - **Ask one question before comparing prices: who does the work, and where do they sit?** A low quote often means a chain of subcontractors. - **The budget option with the worst record** is a cheap monthly retainer covering everything thinly. - **Project work beats thin retainers** when money is tight. Buy imagery and research as defined pieces with a fixed price. - **Your own time is the real budget line.** Four to six hours a week during a launch, and it is the cheapest labor you have. - **Protect your account while economizing.** Granted user permissions only, never shared credentials, whatever you pay. ## Failure modes, ranked by what they cost you ### The thin retainer covering everything A low monthly fee that promises listing, advertising, creative and strategy is arithmetic that does not close. Somebody is either doing very little of each or handing pieces to whoever is cheapest that week. This is the most expensive budget option, because it feels like coverage while nothing is progressing, and the damage is invisible for the first two or three months. The tell is scope without owners. Ask who specifically will write your listing, who will build your campaigns, and whether those two people work for the company you are paying. Everything we do at Flapen is in house, with no subcontracting, precisely because a chain of vendors has no single point of accountability and the client is the only person positioned to notice. ### The marketplace gig bundle Listing copy, images and a keyword file bought as separate cheap gigs. Occasionally excellent, frequently generic, and there is no relationship between the three deliverables. You end up with copy targeting one set of terms and images arguing for a different benefit. This option is defensible if you brief it tightly. Write the brief yourself, based on competitor reviews, and treat the freelancer as a pair of hands rather than a strategist. ### The percentage of ad spend arrangement sold as no retainer It sounds free because there is no monthly fee. The agency's revenue then rises with your ad budget, which points the incentive away from efficiency exactly when a beginner needs discipline most. If money is tight, this is the structure that gets tightest the fastest. ### Doing all of it yourself while working full time Not a failure by itself, and it is how plenty of good brands start. It fails when the calendar collides with launch week, because a launch has a fortnight where the work has to happen daily. Decide in advance which fortnight it is and clear it. ### Cutting the advertising budget to afford help The most self defeating trade in the list. Below about $1,000 a month there is not enough data for optimization to mean anything, so paying a specialist to optimize a budget too small to learn from buys you a report about noise. ## What each budget option is actually for | Option | Real cost | When it is the right choice |
| --- | --- | --- | | Fully self managed | Your time, four to six hours weekly at launch | First product, tight capital, you want to learn the account | | Project buys (research, imagery) | Fixed fee per piece | You can brief precisely and manage the rest | | Managed service, one product | Monthly fee plus your two hours a month | You have launch capital and want speed over education | | Thin everything retainer | Low fee, high hidden cost | Rarely | | Percentage of ad spend | Grows with your budget | When you want the incentive pointed away from you | Our own entry tier is $800 a month for one product, and it includes the same service set as every higher tier. I publish that as a reference point for comparison, not as the answer to every situation. Plenty of beginners are better served by doing it themselves for six months first. ## What most agencies will not tell you Cheap and expensive proposals often describe the same underlying labor, just distributed differently. The question that separates them is not price, it is location and employment: who performs the work, are they employed by the company you are contracting with, and can you speak to them. That single question does more filtering than any pricing comparison. The second thing: no legitimate provider needs your Seller Central password. Access should come through granted user permissions on your own account, and you should be able to revoke it in a minute without asking anyone. Any budget option that requires credentials is not a budget option, it is a risk with an invoice attached. ## Related answers - [Affordable Amazon launch help for beginners](https://flapen.com/blog/affordable-amazon-launch-help-for-beginners) - [Private label vs wholesale on Amazon, pros and cons](https://flapen.com/blog/private-label-vs-wholesale-on-amazon-pros-and-cons) - [Tools vs agencies for Amazon product launches](https://flapen.com/blog/tools-vs-agencies-for-amazon-product-launches) - [Amazon agency red flags to watch out for](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-agency-red-flags-to-watch-out-for) - [Done-for-you Amazon management: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/done-for-you-management) If you want a second opinion on a cheap quote before you accept it, the written audit is free at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Compare Amazon business models](https://flapen.com/guides/business-models) - [Value your Amazon business](https://flapen.com/tools/business-value-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**What is the cheapest legitimate way to start a private label? Are cheap monthly retainers ever worth it?How do I check whether work is subcontracted?Should I pay an onboarding or setup fee? What if I run out of money mid launch? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
