The right beginner research service sells a validated market, not a product list. Demand sizing, competition, differentiation, then a gated small test order.

Look for a defined sequence: market sizing, demand and competition analysis, a differentiation brief, then a small test order. If a provider skips sizing and jumps straight to product picks, keep looking. ## The short version - **Buy a process, not a list.** A spreadsheet of winning products is the weakest deliverable sold in this industry. - **The sequence has five stages and a gate after each.** Sizing, competition, differentiation, economics, then a test order. - **Every gate is a place to stop.** A service that never says stop is selling continuation, not research. - **Ask for the ad economics up front.** A launch ACoS target and a maturity ACoS target are two different numbers. - **Your first product is tuition.** The right service keeps the tuition small. ## The five-stage sequence a beginner should demand You are choosing your first product with no pattern library of your own to lean on. A research service exists to substitute for the experience you do not have yet, and the only way it can do that honestly is with a staged process where each stage can end the project. 1. **Market sizing.** How much annual revenue flows through this market, and is it growing or flattening. The gate: the market clears the provider's stated revenue floor. Ask what their floor is and why it sits there. 2. **Competition and the rating gap.** Read the incumbents' negative reviews in bulk and look for the complaint that repeats. The gate: a documented weakness shared by the products that currently win. 3. **Differentiation brief.** Turn the complaint into a change. The gate: a specific product modification, in writing, not an adjective like premium or improved. 4. **Unit economics.** Model the margin after fees and acquisition cost. This is where advertising numbers belong, and they come in pairs. At launch we run ACoS aggressively to buy rank and reviews; at maturity we tighten it to bank profit. A provider who quotes one ACoS for the life of the product has never run one through both stages, and that is my benchmark question for any service, mine included. 5. **A small test order.** Real rating, real conversion rate, real acquisition cost. The gate: the numbers hold before more capital follows. This is the sequence my team runs inside our own [Amazon FBA product research](https://flapen.com/amazon-fba-product-research) service, and it is the standard to hold anyone else to. ## Three questions that grade a provider in one call First, which stage does your deliverable stop at. Most stop at stage two, because stages three through five need operators rather than tool subscriptions. Second, what would make you reject a market entirely. A concrete answer means the process has teeth. Third, can I see a sanitized past deliverable. The document tells you in five minutes what the sales call hides. At Flapen about 70 brands have entered management through some version of this sequence, and the rejected markets outnumber the accepted ones by a wide margin. ## What a beginner package will not tell you The economics of cheap research push providers toward volume: more lists, more picks, more customers, no accountability for outcomes. A service paid per idea has no commercial reason to tell you that none of this month's ideas passed. The other omission is sequencing. Product picks without a differentiation brief and unit economics are not early-stage research, they are the absence of late-stage research, and the missing stages are exactly the ones that decide whether your first order sells or ages in a warehouse. ## Related answers - [Amazon product research service under $200](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-product-research-service-under-200) - [Compare done-for-you Amazon research providers](https://flapen.com/blog/compare-done-for-you-amazon-research-providers) - [What service to use for Amazon niche scouting](https://flapen.com/blog/what-service-to-use-for-amazon-niche-scouting) - [Rank services offering full Amazon launch research](https://flapen.com/blog/rank-services-offering-full-amazon-launch-research) - [Amazon sourcing and product research services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/sourcing-and-research-services) When you want the whole sequence run for you, gates included, start with the free audit at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Source the product](https://flapen.com/guides/product-sourcing) - [Calculate the tariff on a shipment](https://flapen.com/tools/tariff-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**How much should a beginner pay for product research? What is a rating gap?Why do launch and maturity ACoS targets differ? Can I run this sequence myself with tools? How long should research take before a first order? What should I ask on the first call with a research provider? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
