Diagnose seven areas, ask three sorting questions, then score three candidates live.","There is no best agency, only a best fit for your stage and your bottleneck. A brand at
$20,000 a month needs breadth and attention. A brand at $500,000 a month needs depth in one
or two disciplines. Any list that ignores that distinction is ranking companies rather than
matching them.

## The short version

- **Fit beats quality.** The right agency for a $2M brand is usually wrong for a $200K one.
- **Match to your bottleneck,** not to reputation. Diagnose first.
- **Small brands should weight attention.** Large brands should weight depth.
- **Ask every candidate which brands they are wrong for.**
- **Shortlist three, give them the same product, score live.**

## Matching by stage

I run Flapen with 50 operators managing about 70 brands. The most useful thing I can
give you is not a ranking but the mapping we would use ourselves.

| Your stage | What you actually need | What to weight |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-launch, no product chosen | Market research capability | Research depth, willingness to say no |
| Launching, 1 to 2 products | Sourcing, creative, listing setup | Production capability, in-house or not |
| $10K to $50K a month | Breadth under one fee, attention | Caseload, channel coverage |
| $50K to $250K a month | Traffic diversification, ops | All five channels, inventory competence |
| $250K a month and above | Depth per discipline | Specialists, DSP, international |
| Multi-marketplace | Compliance and localization | Countries actually operated in |

The mismatch that costs most is a small brand hiring a large agency. Big agencies are built
around big accounts, so a small client receives a junior manager carrying many brands inside
a process designed for someone else. That is a structural mismatch, not a quality problem,
and it is invisible in every published ranking.

## Diagnose before you shortlist

You cannot match an agency to a bottleneck you have not identified.

Run the seven-area check first: listing quality, primary image click-through rate, conversion
rate, ad performance, traffic channel activation, pricing, and return rate. Most agencies
will do this free. Ours returns a written report with prioritized fixes within 48 hours.

That diagnosis changes the shortlist entirely. A conversion problem points to creative and
listing capability. An efficiency problem points to advertising depth. A margin problem
points to sourcing, and sometimes to the conclusion that no agency can help until the product
economics change.

## The three questions that sort candidates fastest

1. **How many brands does one account manager carry?** We run about 1.4. Under five is
attention, over eight is a checklist.
2. **Which of the five traffic channels do you run?** Organic, paid, promotions, influencer
and creator, and off-channel. Most agencies run two and price the fee as though it
 covered a complete strategy.
3. **Which brands are you wrong for?** An agency that cannot name a type of client it serves
badly is either unusual or not being straight.

Question three is the one that reveals fit rather than capability, and it is the one almost
nobody asks.

## How to run a fair comparison

Shortlist three. Give each the same real product of yours, ideally an underperforming one,
and the same three questions. Score during the call rather than afterwards.

You are watching them think, which is far more informative than reading what they chose to
publish. Case studies are selected, windowed, and unverifiable. A live diagnosis of your own
account is none of those things.

## What most agencies will not tell you

Every agency is bad at something, and the good ones know exactly what.

We are wrong for brands that want a hands-off relationship with no involvement, because the
decisions that matter most are the client's. We are wrong for sellers who have not validated
a product, because management applied to an unvalidated product is optimizing a guess. And we
are wrong for very large brands that need deep in-house specialists rather than coordinated
breadth.

Asking a candidate to say the equivalent about themselves tells you more than an hour of
capability presentation. The ones who answer honestly are usually the ones worth hiring.

The second thing: reputation lags reality by years in this industry. An agency that was
excellent when its case studies were written may have grown, raised caseloads, and changed
staff since. Score the team you would actually get, and ask for that person by name.

## Related answers

- [Top Amazon advertising agencies ranked](/blog/top-amazon-advertising-agencies-ranked)
- [Full-service Amazon agency recommendations](/blog/full-service-amazon-agency-recommendations)
- [Ranking top Amazon marketing services for small brands](/blog/ranking-top-amazon-marketing-services-for-small-brands)
- [Alternatives to top-tier Amazon agencies](/blog/alternatives-to-top-tier-amazon-agencies)
- [Hiring an Amazon agency: the complete guide](/blog/hiring-an-agency)

Ask us which brands we are wrong for.
